Project Update: A Message Carried on the Winds of Fate.

Greetings once more, Adventurer!

Another week has passed, and we find ourselves one step closer to embarking on our great voyage in Jason and the Argonauts. The tides are shifting, the crew is gathering… and the legend draws ever nearer.

If you would see this journey grow into something truly epic, we call upon you: share this quest with your fellow adventurers. Spread word to your friends, your gatherings, and your far-reaching social media networks. The more who join our ranks, the greater the rewards that await.

For know this…
We have prepared a hoard of treasures. Stretch goals lie ahead, waiting to be uncovered. With enough brave souls, these rewards may not only enrich Jason and the Argonauts, but perhaps even echo into Hercules and the 12 Labors…..

A New Discovery Awaits
Today, we grant you a first glimpse of a Destination Location card, a place of wonder, danger, and adventure. These locations will test your wits, offering new challenges as you sail into the unknown. Followers of this campaign may scroll onward to the exclusive content to see these illustrations. But first, a challenge awaits you…

Once again, a shadow stands before you. A warrior. A legend. One of the chosen few.
Can you guess the Argonaut? Study the silhouette well, and test your knowledge of myth and legend.
Speak Adventurer, leave your guess in the comments and let it be known which Argonaut you believe stands before you.

The truth, along with the full reveal, awaits those who follow the campaign.

Project Update: Kamon concept art and sneak peek

Last week, I've been working on making 22 kamon—family crests—for the interior content. I don't really have a clear view on where I'll be using them yet (there are 22 of them not because I designed one for each of the 22 kami, but because I just got carried away doodling them during D&D sessions). I'll find a place for some of them, though!

While making kamon concepts, I tried to depict the four tarot suits (wands, cups, swords, and coins) which will also be appearing in the adventure, and I also included some designs for the calamity which you will be facing as you play the game. A few general ones center around shide and shimenawa—Shinto paper streamers and knots.

All kamon will be in the concept art book, but below are a few that have a high chance of making it into the game book. The top left one is already in my selection of favorites.

I'm dying to get started on kami designs, soon, too <3 Their book descriptions are getting pretty detailed already and I have a clear image of all of them. Here is an excerpt of the kami Gusha (The Fool):

Gusha is a kami of roads and travel. They appear as a wanderer, or a dancing light at night. Their mask is made of wood, their appearance like the wilderness of the woods, but their lower body dressed in the clothes of civilization. Wherever Gusha walks, they leave a small ripple as though are walking on water—even when the ground is solid under their feet). From Gusha's temples grow the antlers of a young deer.

(This text is still in draft and may change in the final version.)

That's it for now, but I'll be back with more soon! Thanks for following the project along while it solidifies into a playable game :D

Project Update: Community Crypts: Join in and design a Word Dungeon

Heya Dungeoneer,

One Hundred Dungeons isn't just my project. It's yours too. As part of the campaign, all backers will receive a bonus set of Little Word Dungeons called the Community Crypts. Every dungeon in this set will be designed and submitted by followers of the campaign (that's you!).

Here's how it works
Scribble out a dungeon somewhere, take a picture or screengrab then send it to me. I'll draw your dungeon in the Word Dungeon style and add it to the set. You'll be credited as the contributor and you can name your dungeon.

The sketch (left), the dungeon (right).

Your dungeon needs an entrance (En) and an exit (Ex), a workable solution and at least one scoring mechanic: Treasure chests (T), gemstones (G), word length scoring. You can also used locked doors (D) and keys (K) if you want to add some more puzzle to your puzzle.

Full info on how to design and submit your dungeon is linked here - make sure you read it before sending me a dungeon sketch. It's super easy, if you can draw a grid, you're already halfway there.

The Community Crypts will be given freely to every backer of the main 100 dungeons tier. How many will be in the set? Dunno, that's up to you! The more submissions, the bigger it gets.

Oh, and for the eagle-eyed amongst you, the top image is another little dungeon for you to solve!

I look forward to seeing some wonderful dungeon creations from you! Throw questions in the comments if you have any.

Joe

Project Update: Your First Glimpse of Jason and the Argonauts: From Sketch to Legend

Greetings, Adventurer.

You have stumbled upon the sacred halls of our Launch Party for Jason and the Argonauts, a tale not yet told, but soon to be sung.

With just over a month before our great voyage begins, we invite you behind the veil. Here, in these early days, you are among the chosen few, witnesses to the forging of legend itself. By following this journey, you shall be the first to uncover the secrets, triumphs, and trials that shape Jason and the Argonauts.

Followers of this campaign may scroll onward, and behold relics of creation, early illustrations and evolving visions brought to life by the skilled hands of artist David Schneider and graphic designer Ammon Anderson. Watch as mere sketches rise into heroes worthy of song.

But first, a challenge awaits you…
Gaze upon the shadow before you and test your knowledge of legend. Can you guess the Argonaut?
Speak now, Adventurer, leave your guess in the comments and let it be known which Argonaut you believe stands before you.

The answer, along with the full reveal, awaits in the exclusive content reserved for followers.

Project Update: Inside the Vault: From Idea to Table - Update 2

Hey Adventurers,

We’re back with another look behind the curtain, this time with something a little smaller… significantly more damp... and maybe a bit sticky.

Not everything in Vault of Monsters is built to crush your party into the floor or guard ancient ruins. Some of them are just here to cause problems in a much more… inconvenient way.

This is one of those.

Puddlejumper

The Original Brief: Puddlejumper
(We knew exactly what this one was called straight away, which is rare)

Puddlejumper is a small, mischievous creature, barely a foot tall, with blue translucent skin and eyes that are far too expressive for something that absolutely cannot be trusted. It is constantly dripping, leaving a trail of water behind it like a mobile trip hazard.

It doesn’t attack. It doesn’t threaten. It just… interferes.
Puddlejumper delights in startling travellers. A quiet path suddenly becomes a splash. A still puddle erupts into a fountain. Boots fill with water. Dignity is lost. It considers all of this a great success.

It’s harmless, technically. But after ten minutes, most adventurers start reconsidering their stance on that.

They’re said to be spirits of water, born from the laughter of children playing in the rain. In dry regions, spotting one is considered good luck.
In the moment, however, it mostly feels like a personal attack.

Inspiration & Direction

We wanted something that could break the rhythm of a session. A creature that doesn’t threaten the party’s health, but absolutely threatens their patience. There’s something very satisfying about watching a heavily armoured fighter slowly lose control of a situation to something the size of a loaf of bread.

Visually, we wanted it to sit somewhere between an axolotl and two Pokémon (Can you guess which ones?) It needed big eyes, soft shape, just enough charm that you hesitate for a second… right before it ruins your day.

Working With Nick!

Nick had a lot of fun with this one. We sent over the idea of a small, waterlogged nuisance with far too much personality, and he leaned straight into it. Big eyes, slightly smug expression, and just enough detail in the translucent skin to make it feel like it’s never quite solid.

Puddlejumper

There are a few creatures in the Vault that sit in this space. Not hostile, not friendly, just… unhelpful. They tend to cause more chaos than anything with claws.

We’ll be back soon with something a bit less playful.
Cheers,
James

Project Update: Portent progress + art

Hi everyone!

This is my first update for Portent, and I want to take you along with the process so far.

As you might have seen, I started this project pretty recently. It hasn't been planned for years, it hasn't been lurking in the back of my head, waiting for an excuse. But it's a passion project for which I have a very clear vision and absolutely dedicated commitment.

The game has been coming along pretty well. At this moment, the basic game rules have been established, the copy at first draft status, and I have created and developed 22 kami, each representing a card from the Major Arcana. That means there will be at least 22 kami to come across on your journey in Portent.

But those 22 kami will of course really come to life when there's art accompanying their descriptions, and that means I've been sketching and doing some style tests, I wanted to share some of them with you <3 (Note that none of this is the final style just yet and might not make it to the actual game. Concept art will be included in a separate concept art book.)

Thanks for following the project, and enjoy the journey!

Cheers,
Natasja
