A psychopomp is an entity, god, spirit, or something else entirely, which escorts the spirit of the dead to the other side. While they may have overlap with gods of the dead, their role as psychopomps are to be a neutral guide that takes the spirit to its proper destination. They are frequently associated with liminal spaces such as cross roads, rivers, and dreams because they function as a bridge between worlds. Animals like dogs, horses, and birds, as a result, are frequently viewed as psychopomps as they move quickly through the world from place to place, though many mythologies choose to make god figures to represent the idea. They carry with them the comfort that when you die, you are not simply gone, but instead you will be guided to what lies beyond.
