Daybreak was just nominated for the prestigious Kennerspiel des Jahres!!
Daybreak's German title is e-Mission and is published there by Schmidt Spiele
This is one of the biggest awards in boardgames, and we're 1 of 3 games to have made the shortlist! Matt has a second game on the shortlist (Ticket To Ride Legacy), so we especially like his chances 🙃
Also, we're also a finalist for Best Board Game Award at the 2024 Games for Change festival!
How cool is that?? If you've been enjoying Daybreak, consider giving it a rating on BGG? And we just got new copies in at Amazon and CMYK, so if you're looking for extras or gifts, you can get them there!
Three more quick things…
📦 The box replacements that folks requested are shipping NOW. So you should be getting yours soon. West coast US folks, you might have already received them, even.
♟️ Later this month, Matteo will demo Daybreak, facilitate a chess-hacking workshop, and be on a panel about an upcoming book on games and politics. If you're in London, you should go!
🏫 And finally, from a high school teacher in Boulder, CO:
We ended up getting 20 copies for two classrooms and spent 3 days learning and playing Daybreak. It was a rich experience for the students. All told, over 300 students played the game and were stoked to be able to do so in class. It really brought in a lot of topics (resilience, value of research, investment, women's rights, geoengineering, policy issues) into discussion that don't usually make it into the climate discussion. You should know that making and sharing this is making a difference and opening up perspectives for kids about the future.
During the campaign, we pledged to donate $1 per backer to nonprofits working in climate and environmental justice causes. We sent those donations late last year, and I wanted to share where it went!
$5,000 to WE ACT: This organization works on behalf of communities of color and low income residents in NYC to keep them prioritized in environmental planning, policy, and decision making.
$5,000 to BSSK: The Indian nonprofit BSSK (Baikunthapur Sishu Seva Kendra) focuses on rural people of in the Sundarbans, where its citizens are regularly affected by devastating storms, rainfall, floods, and drinking water contamination.
BSSK used the funds to support awareness and training of close to 300 participants on climate change impacts, hygiene, and sanitation. Here's a pic of one of the sessions:
What else? One of our favorite boardgame channels—No Pun Included—had a GREAT review of Daybreak:
And finally, we hope you've had a chance to play Daybreak! if you have, do you have a second to drop a rating on Boardgamegeek?
You'll see that there are 4 options that you can choose:
Get a replacement box mailed to you
Get a 40% off discount code at cmyk.games
Get a $15 refund
Just note that you had an issue, but don't need anything
And please reply if you had *any* box issues, even if you're going to choose #4, just so we know the extent of the issue. And for any non-box replacement parts, email us at [email protected] instead.
🇺🇸/🇨🇦 US and Canada are done! Email us at [email protected] if you don't have your copy.
🌏/🌍 Everyone else, all the shipments have been tested and approved! You should be getting an email from ShipQuest (or GamesQuest, or one that mentions Palm Court) confirming your address. That will be open for a few days and then shipping will begin IMMEDIATELY. So mid next week, if things go like they did for Canada.
Hope everyone who got their copies are enjoying the game! And thrilled to be getting this final set out in time for holiday game nights :)
Thanks so much for sticking with us, everyone. Really appreciate your patience.
We're getting reports that 10-20% of backers are having issues with the game boxes breaking and stickers opening/tearing. As you can probably guess, the issue stems from not using plastic coating/reinforced tape on a box containing such a heavy game. We're so sorry—we know it's such a bummer to get a messed up box. We had done a LOT of successful testing prior to shipping, but the failure rate is clearly unacceptable.
Here's our solution: if you receive a damaged box, don't worry for now, just play as normal. Once we've figured out the best way to reprint and repackage the boxes, we'll send out a survey where you can either:
Get a new box, or
Get a partial refund, or
Register that your box had issues, but are OK just taping it up
International backers, we're working on a way to pack yours to make sure these issues don't happen! But if they do, it'll be the same deal, where you can request a new box or partial refund if you like.
OK, bummer news over. And other than this box thing, copies of Daybreak seem to be arriving and getting played! Let us know if you've had a chance to play yet!
