BackerKit FAQ
How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.
To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.
All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.
Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.
Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.
When will I be charged for my pledge?
Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.
What happens after the campaign is over?
The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.
Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.
Project FAQ
Can paid content Add-Ons be used without a MapForge license?
Yes, technically they can, but only in low resolution. Paying for high-quality content makes more sense if you’ll be using it in high-resolution (i.e. with a MapForge license).
What operating systems are supported by MapForge?
Windows (7 or higher). Mac OS X (using the WINE version). While there is no native Linux support, Linux users should be able to run the software using WINE or Virtualbox.
Can a MapForge license be used on multiple computers?
A MapForge license is for a single computer. When you get a new computer to replace your old one, you can claim a new license code free of charge (and the old license code will be disabled). If you really need to use the software on another computer simultaneously, there's a low cost option for a second license, which you can read about here: https://www.mapforge-software.com/product/mapforge-license-for-2nd-computer/ I may someday release MapForge on Steam. If that happens, you should be able to use the app on any computer you want, as long as it meets the modest system requirements.
Can I publish maps I create with MapForge?
That depends. In principle, yes you can, but be aware that many Add-Ons will probably have publishing restrictions (e.g., Personal use only). If your maps don’t use any Add-Ons with such restrictions, you should be OK to publish what you create with the app (as long as you aren’t infringing anyone else’s IP). There are currently close to 70 content Add-Ons for MapForge that ARE approved for publishing or commercial use, and dozens of them are even free! You can view them here: https://www.mapforge-software.com/product-category/approved-for-publishing-commercial-use/?orderby=price All of the Add-Ons from THIS particular campaign will be for Personal Use Only, but it's worth nothing that if you're interested in using the Add-Ons commercially, it should be possible (though it would require an additional fee for the original artist/creator).
How much will the Add-Ons from this campaign cost later on, if I can't pledge for them now?
Each content Add-On will probably cost $1 to $2 more than the prices listed on the campaign page, when they are offered for general purchase on the MapForge Store (probably in January 2025). Supporting this campaign will not only save you money, it will also ensure that the proposed content Add-Ons get made in the first place.
