Escape from the Underworld is a massive 50-page comic book that also happens to be the final issue in the hit fantasy series Unicorn: Vampire Hunter.

As part of this campaign, we are working to unlock chapters of a guidebook to all the locations in the world of Unicorn: Vampire Hunter! Each time we hit a guidebook stretch goal, all the backers will get to vote on which location we will unlock a chapter for next!

When we hit 8k, you'll get to vote on whether the first guidebook chapter we unlock is The Magical Marsh, The Dark Forest, The City, or The Old Kingdom.

Fifteen years ago, I wrote a fairytale on a yellow legal pad. It started with a beautiful magical marsh, where a wizard lived with magical puppies that never grew old. Then came the unicorn and the vampires and the young woman, and all of it felt silly and tragic and right. I wrote it all down on that notepad, shared it with my friends, and then stashed it away. I never thought it would amount to much, let alone a comic book series that hundreds of people I'd never met would read.

Seven years ago, I had the crazy idea to hire an artist to draw the story I'd written. I took out that old notepad and re-wrote the whole thing as a graphic novel script, and then I sent a message to Daryl Toh asking if he would draw it for me. He said no. So I waited for a year, and then I asked him again. For some reason, that time he said yes.

In 2020 we launched the first issue of Unicorn: Vampire Hunter, and it was the most successful crowdfunding campaign I had ever launched up to that point. COVID was in full swing, and crowdfunding was hitting a real peak at that time as mainstream comics were struggling. Edward raced onto the scene at the exact right moment.

Since then we have launched eight more successful Unicorn: Vampire Hunter campaigns, and eight more campaigns for spinoffs and special editions. Now we are closing in on the final issue of the series, and we wanted to celebrate in a big way.

I have always prided myself on delivering comics to backers safe and undamaged. All the comics will be shipped bagged and boarded securely in Gemini mailers, which are specifically designed to protect comics from impact damage and keep them rigid in transit.

If your comic does arrive damaged in any way, contact me and I'll ship you a replacement as soon as possible.

NOTE: Shipping will be charged on the survey after the campaign. This is to ensure that you are charged for shipping accurately by weight, rather than a rough guess. The comic book is 60% complete, and the current goal is to finish artwork and lettering by mid October and then move to printing. This is the largest single issue comic I have ever created, and Daryl is pouring every ounce of love he has into it.

I am currently expecting to begin fulfilment in November and wrap up by the end of 2026. If any issues come up I will communicate them clearly with the backers.

Caleb Palmquist - Creator and Writer

Caleb is a comic book writer and artist living in Spokane, Washington. He's been making comics for the last ten years, and telling stories for as long as he can remember. When he's not writing or drawing, Caleb is reading, playing board games, and talking to anyone who will listen to his ramblings.

Daryl Toh - Artist

Daryl Toh is a full time comic book artist and freelance illustrator based in Malaysia.  His most notable comics include Outer God (with Luc Labelle), Is'nana: the Were-Spider, Vol.2  (With Greg Anderson-Elysee), and Nico's Fortune and Cricketsong (both with Ryan King).  You can find most of his work on Instagram at @tohdraws.

Dave Lentz - Letterer and Designer

Dave is a letterer, designer, and sometimes artist and writer. When not reading comics he does his best to create them by any of the above means. He’s pretty keen on his wife and son, Hellboy, Star Wars, TMNT, and comics in general and has done work for Source Point Press, Bad Bug, and more.
