I think grandmas must come with a sense of their own mortality, because one thing that will always stick with me was my gran telling us:
“if there’s anything you see that you want, put a post-it on it so I know who it should go to when I’m gone”
Don’t get me wrong, I loved my grandma to bits, but her interior design skills weren’t getting featured in “Better Homes and Gardens” any time soon.
And that’s not even touching on the stuff that, well, nobody wants to touch. (Especially not with a bare butt)
Anyway, it got me thinking…
“What is going to happen to all this random stuff when she’s gone?”
And while my gran might not be dead yet, Dead Grandma was born.
To fully bring the project to life, I partnered with a childhood friend and unbelievably talented artist, Amber Whitworth. (You can see her much more serious art at @amberwhitworthart on instagram)
Finding the style for the illustration came with its own challenges. Our first attempts seemed like they would give children nightmares.
Our second attempt was a little better, but still came with its fair share of questionable characters.
But after some trial and error (and a lot of caffeine), we finally struck gold!
Our characters were silly, quirky, and just the right amount of bizarre. You know, the kind of relatives you might actually see at your own family reunion (minus the whole being dead thing).
Now, we know what you're thinking - "Dead Grandma? Isn't that a bit morbid?" But trust us, we're all about celebrating the hilarious family quirks and hijinks that make life - and card games - worth it.
