BackerKit FAQ
How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.
To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.
All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.
Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.
Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.
When will I be charged for my pledge?
Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.
What happens after the campaign is over?
The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.
Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.
Project FAQ
What are your replacement, return, and refund policies for the campaign?
In general, a charged pledge is final. Cancellations are not accepted, and I won't issue refunds for things outside of my control (ex: your financial situation changing before fulfillment starts, impatience with provided fulfillment timeline within reason, etc.) The money you give me is going to be spent to make this project happen, not held on to, which is what crowdfunding is for! If there is a problem that I am at fault for, such as goods arriving damaged due to poor packaging or the wrong items being sent, I will replace the item at my expense. I will only ever insist on refunding you over replacement if I would be losing a serious amount of money on paying the shipping or there is no inventory to do a replacement with. I want people to get their items and be happy with what they receive! I do often replace missing mail if I'm able to as well, despite that being outside my control, but please know that is a courtesy that I might be unable to offer. Returns are accepted at backer expense for 1 to 1 exchanges, such as deciding you wanted a Skye but you ordered a Garth. I'm willing to make that swap with you if you're willing to pay the shipping and there hasn't been a loss of value to the plush you're sending back (ex: sending it back with stains, cut off tags, or tears.) Returns must be requested within 24 hours of reception.
When do I have to pay?
You are not charged for anything until the campaign ends, and even then it is only if the campaign is successful! If the campaign hits its initial funding goal, you will either be charged at the very end of the campaign, or your pay in 4 installments will start at that time. You will not be charged for shipping until your order is locked, which will not occur until either Moose has a finalized prototype, or fulfillment is closer to beginning. Whichever happens last!
There is not a physical, finalized version of the plush I want yet?
Moose is well in to prototyping, but since he isn't finalized we don't know completely what he will look like! If you back hoping for Moose but don't like how he turns out, don't worry, your order will not be locked until after he has a finalized prototype. You can swap him for Garth, Skye, or Valentino. Refunds will not be provided based on taste for the finalized prototype. Please only back for a Moose if you're ok with such a possibility!
What is campaign exclusive?
At this time there are no campaign exclusive items other than guest artist stickers. Getting anything manufactured or printed requires certain minimums to be met, and more than what was ordered needs to be acquired to account for damaged items, which means I'll be left with a lot of inventory that I can't sell taking up valuable room. Throwing it out would be super wasteful, and giving it away can upset backers who paid. That said, the majority of these non-plush items will not be made again any time soon if at all, so getting them during the campaign is still your best bet to not miss out!
Will my plush be stuffed?
By default, yes! If tariffs do not force this to change, you will have the choice to select unstuffed on your survey if you would prefer, but these plush do not have zippers, so unstuffed plush require sewing.
Will you be stuffing these plush on your own?
That depends on how successful the campaign is! Moose, Skye, Garth, and Udon plush for campaign fulfillment are currently not planned to be stuffed by me! Hand-stuffing with our current setup is a huge bottleneck on the fulfillment process, so the current plan is to eat the shipping increase on just enough plush to fulfill Backerkit orders. If the campaign is more successful than expected this may change, as it will become less expensive for me to import an entire industry strength stuffing machine vs. paying the shipping. Plans may also change if tariffs force us to change our manufacturing plan, but this will not affect the availability of stuffed plush- only unstuffed. Valentino and the giant gryphon are plush that are already in hand, and as a result they will be stuffed by me. This is unfortunately a big part of the challenge of making big plush like these. The sheer amount of space required to have hundreds of plush this size stuffed is a whole budget in and of itself, and it is something we are always battling as a small plush maker.
How should I wash my plushies?
Ideally by hand, in cold water, and using a mild, bleach-free detergent! Let them dry in a place with actively moving air and ideally low humidity. I use floor fans for this purpose, and have them set up in a room with a dehumidifier running. The goal is to prevent excessive clumping of the stuffing and to stop moisture from being trapped deep in the stuffing, which could lead to all sorts of mildew problems. Do not dry them in a dryer, you risk ruining their texture at best! If your plush is severely soiled (ex: soaked in soda) and you have any sewing skills to speak of, I highly recommend ripping the least obvious seam you can comfortably repair, removing the stuffing, and replacing it fully.
Why am I being offered pay in 4?
Pay in 4 is being offered since our plush are pretty expensive due to their size! This option allows you to pay your full pledge amount over time. We recommend only pledging for money you have. If you can't afford it without pay in 4 you probably can't afford it with pay in 4. Please don't overextend yourself! The option is, however, nice to have for those with banks that get weird about large purchases, or those who are simply not in a hurry to be fully parted from the money they have. Your rewards will not be fulfilled until your full payment is received. The same policies apply to pay in 4 payments as 1 time payments. Additionally, your pledge will be canceled and your processed payments will be treated as generous donations if your total is not paid by the end of fulfillment time. Unpaid payment plans can cause significant manufacturing delay that affect the whole campaign, so prompt resolutions are encouraged.
What happens with extra funds?
I plan to put EVERYTHING made on the backerkit in to making plush. That means increasing the order size for unlocked designs, developing more plush, and keeping Lairbrew operating. Tariffs have made plush production more expensive than ever, so it will definitely all be put to good use, and much faster than you might expect.
Is the goal so high because of tariffs?
Yes. I have had to budget with nightmare scenarios in mind, and that includes building the full tariff cost in to the initial goal. This does at least mean that the tariffs known about at the time of launch will be covered. There is more cushion built in that usual as well.
Are there customization options for the plush?
Unfortunately no. Due to the change in how we're doing the stuffing step for this campaign, I cannot get these plush made weighted or with any kind of special stuffing. I also can't add scent sachets, magnets, or voice boxes. If we end up having to switch manufacturing up even more due to tariffs, unstuffed plush will also become unavailable.
Could you please make the idea I have?
Maybe someday! If it isn't in the goals it is beyond the scope of this project, but you are welcome to make suggestions for anything that isn't a specific OC of yours or a "closed species." I am always looking to make plush that make people happy! If you are wanting something entirely bespoke, I do offer bulk custom orders. I do not offer single customs. https://lairbrewforyou.carrd.co/
