Hello everybody and welcome to your February update. It’s a juicy one! Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Awaiting the Burning Gods: Progress Report
Now that Daniel has submitted all but two of the art pieces Dai is working on the final layout, and it looks fantastic. Honestly, I could yammer on about it but have a look at these samples as I think they speak for themselves.

The Smuggler’s Guide to 1365…
Is done! The manuscript that is. Plus, in a stroke of good luck, the illustrious Jarret Crader had an opening in his schedule and has stepped in for editing. Long time Mothership fans may recognize Jarret’s name from a whole slew of projects including a bunch of work on his own publishing imprint Space Penguin Inc., the majority of first party Mothership adventures, and, of course, Magnum Galaxy's very own Dying Hard on Hardlight Station. Jarret has already completed the developmental edit on The Smuggler’s Guide, and will be doing line and copy this week which means I’ll be turning it over for layout very soon. Can’t wait to see what Dai does with this outer rim outlaw’s guide to the galaxy (or at least one particularly lawless chunk of it).
Speaking of the Smuggler’s Guide I kind of got a little carried away with it. I figured, you know what would make all those cool fence and contraband tables sing? A complete mini-setting to anchor them in! So, surprise surprise, along with the alternate start scenarios, the bonus adventure, and all the promised tables, there is also a whole new location to explore: The Barge Bazaar, an itinerant black market that roams Nakatomi Sector 1365 peddling elicit wares to all with the cash to pay. Can’t wait to share more about it in the coming months but I’ll leave this as a fun teaser of what’s to come.
Cross Collab with Interloper: Androids!
I took a quick break from writing The Smuggler’s Guide last week to switch gears and create some weird, wacky, and occasionally horrifying androids for my cross collab with Joel Hines’ Interloper. I had a lot of fun cranking out 20 different visions of the android copy of the park’s founder. The challenge was to see how many strange, weird, and fresh directions I could come up with. Inspired by Arnold K’s “Dungeon Checklist” from Goblin punch I imagined not only a unique character for each but also how they might function in play to drive action, unlock mysteries, or create some horrific scenes. I love these weird little fellas and can’t wait to try them out when I finally get my hands on the final copy of Joel’s game. Here’s a sneak peak at a couple of my faves:
Backerkit Pledge Manager Progress
The pledge manager opened at the beginning of the month and already 91% of you have completed your surveys. That’s awesome! If you have yet to do it, lost or never received your survey you can head to the survey recovery page, enter your email, and you will receive another survey link.
Speaking of the Pledge Manager, I received a couple of questions about how the promotional patches appear in your cart. Those of you who are first 48 hours backers should all have 1x complimentary Smoking Darkness Reclamations patches in your carts. The other promo patch is the Landis University patch. That one, as you may remember, is the reward to celebrate all 20 Mothership Month projects funding and it is going out to every physical backer of Awaiting the Burning Gods. If you are a backer at the zine only level you will see 1x of the Landis patch in your cart. However, if you are getting a box set you won’t see the patch in your cart because the patch will be packed inside the box set. So, if you are getting a boxed set, you will be getting the Landis patch. Hope that clarifies that one. If you have any other questions about your cart or survey don’t hesitate to reach out to Backerkit through the Pledge Manager and they will either answer or pass it on to me to respond.
That’s a wrap for this month. This was a big one and I am excited to share even more next month! Until then, all the best and happy adventuring,
The time is nigh: the Backerkit survey's for all you Awaiting the Burning Gods backers is coming. I'm sending the Smoke test to 5% of you as soon as I publish this update. If that goes well (as it should) then I'll email the rest of the survey links Monday. Please complete your survey as quickly as possible since we need this information to fulfill your rewards.
Some Important Notes on Surveys from Backerkit
You do not need to create a BackerKit account to fill out your survey. When you receive the survey invite email, click the survey link to respond. Answer the questions about your reward preferences, provide shipping information, and purchase add-on items if you like.
After you respond to your survey, you can go back later and change your responses at any time before we close the surveys and get our final counts.
If you need to review your information or pledge status, you can return to your survey by clicking the link in your survey email or requesting your survey link under "Lost your survey?" on our BackerKit project page at https://awaiting-the-burning-gods.backerkit.com
If you used your Facebook credentials to log in to your crowdfunding account, the BackerKit survey is sent to the email address associated with your Facebook account. If you have another email address that you prefer to use, please contact support at https://awaiting-the-burning-gods.backerkit.com/faq.
After surveys are sent, if you did not receive the email, and you Signed in with Apple ID, your email address might be a private relay email address. We can help locate your survey and update your email address, please message us or post a comment with your Backer ID or Pledge # found on your confirmation.
What About Shipping Fees? Since shipping fees fluctuate, we will enter fees and charge for shipping a month or two before fulfillment commences. I'll post an update with a heads up before Backerkit charges your cards to make sure everyone is kept in the loop. In the meantime, I've been working to secure reliable and affordable shipping to as many points on the globe as possible and I have to say I am happy with results so far.
That's all for now, see you on the other side of Surveys!
Welcome to the first monthly update for Awaiting the Burning Gods. There's lots to share today so let's dive in. First off, I hope you all enjoyed the holidays, however you celebrate. I enjoyed a little time off myself after the rollercoaster of Mothership Month and am happy to be back at the keyboard working away on getting this thing ready for you all.
State of the Zine
Before the holidays I made significant headway on The Smuggler's Guide to 1365, including writing unique alternate start, smuggling scenarios for Awaiting the Burning Gods, Dying Hard on Hardlight Station, The Cleaning of Prison Station Echo, and Nirvana on Fire. Each scenario offers tweaks to the original set up to reframe it to be perfect for your outer rim outlaws and lead them to explore scenarios they otherwise may have missed in a standard run of the adventure.
Meanwhile, Daniel has been working through more of the art for the zine and only has a few pieces remaining. Here's his take on the mysterious Smoking Darkness Reclamations. Watch out for them stalking the shadows between the ruined towers of Ma'at!
Smoking Darkness Reclamation Team on the hunt.
On the layout side of things, Dai has blocked out the book and it's looking like the final page count, with all the art and maps is going to come in around 44! Should be nice and substantial while fitting perfectly into the A5 saddle-stitched format. Here’s a draft of one of Dai’s maps for the upper tomb, showcasing a “1980s cassette futurism” aesthetic inspired by low-res orbital 3D scans. The text boxes on the sides will hold notes from the Landis survey techs, prepping your explorers for their descent.

Building theBackerkit
A couple house keeping notes here regarding completing your orders, add-ons, and grabbing your digital copies.
The Late Pledge Store Is Live: If you are reading this but missed the campaign or want to share it with a friend, the Late Pledge Store is open!
Backer Surveys On the Way: I'm on round two of setup working with the Backerkit team to make sure all the stars are correctly aligned for the Survey. Should have those ready to go for you to confirm your order and finalize your add-ons in the next few weeks, so keep an eye on your inbox - especially your junk mail folder! I'll send a quick note when I'm sending them so you'll get a heads up before as well.
Digital Downloads in the works: For those who ordered existing Magnum Galaxy Games titles, I’m setting up your downloads. Initially, these will be available through BackerKit, with final copies delivered through DriveThruRPG during campaign fulfillment to complete your collections.
That's it for this month. Until next time I wish you all warmth, happiness, and a critical success on your next stat check.
Thank you all so much for making this my most backed and funded project ever. A whopping 2009 of you believed in Awaiting the Burning Gods and your sheer force of collective will has brought it to life! As are all the creators of Mothership Month, I'm deeply grateful and humbled by your support of my project and can't wait to deliver it into your hands. Plus, with the funding you've provided this thing is going to ROCK.
So, What’s Next?
Wrapping Layout: Over the next month or so DAI and Daniel will be working on completing layout and art for Awaiting the Burning Gods and The Smuggler’s Guide to 1365. I'll be writing the last few pieces of content for the Smuggler's Guide and working with Joel Hines on his cross-collab entry of D100 treasures and contraband goods to smuggle.
Pledge Manager: We’ll open the Backerkit Pledge Manager soon, once open you’ll be able to confirm your pledges and choose any additional add-ons.
PDF Release: As soon the PDFs are ready I'll release preview copies to backers for a first glimpse of the horrors delights to come!
Stretch Goals Recap
Because of your amazing support, and a record setting crunch time push on the backer train here’s what we’ve unlocked:
Custom Dice: Beautifully designed to evoke the lost treasures and culture of Ma'at.
Immersive Audio Aids: Distress calls, creature sounds, and more to enhance your sessions.
The DeluxeSmuggler’s Guide: A standalone zine packed with outlaw missions, ports of call, and DG Chapman's bonus adventure “Shoot the Messenger.”
Monthly Updates
From here on out I’ll be posting monthly updates to keep you informed about progress on the zine, share behind-the-scenes glimpses of the project in motion, and maintain transparency throughout the process. Expect the first of them around this time next month.
Thank you again for helping make Awaiting the Burning Gods a reality. This campaign is a high water mark for Magnum Galaxy Games and an awesome adventure and I’m honored to have you all aboard for the journey. As always, reach out in the comments with questions, requests, or just to share your excitement! I love to hear from you all. Here's to much more to come!
