When Dying Unicorns Dream

An adventure for 3rd-level DCC and 5th-level 5E characters

In the twilight of her life, a dying unicorn seeks passage to the Far Garden.

But the way is barred.

The forest through which she must pass has become overrun by a group of betrayed and broken souls whose suffering has twisted them into something unnatural. Cursed by old wrongs and ancient cruelty, they rise from the wounded land itself, corrupting the path forward and threatening the unicorn’s final journey.

To save her, the heroes must brave a decaying wilderness and descend into the unicorn’s final dream, a fevered vision of sorrow, wonder, and madness, where phantoms of betrayal haunt every shadow and the fate of a legend hangs in the balance. There, the PCs must solve a forgotten mystery and uncover an ancient sin of Whiterock’s first inhabitants.

This is no simple diversion, but a perilous adventure where reality unravels, madness lurks, and only the daring may return unchanged.

What to Expect
  • a dark fairy-tale atmosphere
  • an ancient mystery dating back to the founders of Castle Whiterock
  • surreal dreamscapes and psychedelic horror
  • difficult choices, haunting revelations, and lasting consequences

 Book Details
  •  softcover
  •  black-and-white interior
  •  8.5" x 11"
  •  approximately 25 pages
  •  once the campaign ends, you’ll select your preferred system (5E or DCC) in the backer survey.

"It drags itself from the well like a thing assembled in hatred. A towering, segmented column of fused dwarves and ruined tools, knotted together as if the well has remade them into a single pitiful amalgam. Faces surface along its length, contorted in vengeful snarls, then sink again as others rise to take their place."

The Castle Whiterock Adventurer’s Journal

A deluxe player companion for Castle Whiterock

Castle Whiterock is a vast and perilous place, with multiple levels, competing factions, strange inhabitants, secret passages, forgotten relics, and constant danger. It is the kind of campaign players talk about for years.

This journal is designed not only to preserve the story of the campaign, but to help players survive it. A marked key, a remembered rumor, a rough map, or a hastily recorded warning may later prove the difference between victory and ruin.

Created specifically for use alongside Castle Whiterock, the Adventurer’s Journal is a deluxe, system-neutral companion where players can record quests, rumors, allies, adversaries, keys, treasures, maps, mysteries, and the many hard-won discoveries of their descent beneath Whiterock.

Its level-by-level tracking system helps players organize the dungeon’s many depths, making it easier to track entrances, dangers, clues, unfinished objectives, and all the details that bring a long-form campaign to life.

The Castle Whiterock Adventurer's Journal is more than a notebook, it is a living record of the campaign and your torchlight in the dark.

Back either or both books and receive a bonus Lost Level encounter PDF at no extra cost - Menace in a Bottle.

This bonus encounter is our contribution to The Lost Level of Castle Whiterock, a special crossover dungeon in which each participating publisher adds one encounter to a shared lost level map provided by Goodman Games.

Area 1-10 - Menace in a Bottle

A Secret Room from the Lost Level of Castle Whiterock

Deep beneath Castle Whiterock lies a chamber few adventurers have ever seen, and fewer still have escaped. What appears at first to be a welcoming hall soon reveals itself as something far stranger, with a lavish feast spread upon the table, a charming host inviting weary travelers to dine, and a glittering collection of ancient curios gathered over the centuries.

Yet something is wrong. The food scorches the tongue, the air grows hotter with every passing moment, and in a towering curio cabinet rests an unremarkable brass bottle the host never mentions and never touches.

Because the terrible truth is this - the room itself is the bottle!

Within it waits an imprisoned efreeti, bound by ancient sorcery and desperate to trick others into setting him free.
Will the heroes unravel the chamber’s secret and escape, or will their curiosity unleash ancient fire upon the Lost Level of Castle Whiterock?

Menace in a Bottle includes:
  • a complete one-page secret-room PDF encounter that ties into the other 13 rooms of the Lost Level of Whiterock
  • a deadly puzzle chamber with strong roleplay and escape-room energy
  • a memorable genie encounter with a cruel twist
  • a hidden level bonus that drops easily into your game

Edit

Much like our time in Castle Whiterock, we are sticking to a planned and orderly descent, resisting the urge to open one more door or delve one level deeper. After all, everyone knows that in Whiterock, opening one more door is usually how the trouble starts. So for this campaign, we are keeping things simple and focused, with no stretch goals. We’d rather put our energy into making these books as strong as possible and getting them into your hands.

DriveThruRPG fulfills PDF and print-on-demand copies. Backers receive a one-time code for PDF and/or print-on-demand (POD) copies. POD backers are responsible for a small printing and shipping fee, and DriveThruRPG prints and ships their books. This is the most cost-efficient method of getting print copies to our backers.

Print Costs:
  • When Dying Unicorns Dream print costs are approximately $3 + shipping per book for the 25 page, 8.5 x 11 standard softcover black and white book.
  • Castle Whiterock Adventurer’s Journal print costs are approximately $11 + shipping per book for the 150 page, 6.14 x 9.21 standard hardcover black and white book.

DriveThruRPG collects this per book for printing (the actual price depends on the final page count).

This helps me reach backers in more parts of the world while making sure your support goes directly toward the project rather than being eaten up by unexpected shipping or production costs. It also means you should receive your book more quickly, without delays from bulk freight or warehouse fulfillment.
