Graft is the first book in a new speculative fiction series; the first book is primarily a portal fantasy, but you'll be encountering sci-fi elements down the line. This campaign will fund Graft's initial publication in paperback and ebook. Now's your chance to be one of its first readers, and get your name in the book's acknowledgements section. Stretch goals will include unlocking a hardcover edition and additional artwork, as well as potential suggestions from backers.
If the world has a sense of humor, twenty-year-old Ella knows it’s a cruel one. How else can she explain the perfect synergy of her autism and the strange body-altering ability she was born with? Dealing with sensory issues and trying to keep involuntarily formed claws and swollen muscles secret would’ve been difficult enough without one triggering the other.
When her home is invaded by violent monsters made from the flesh of creatures they infect and kill, Ella learns it’s not just Earth that has its issues. Forced to flee or get ripped apart, Ella gets separated from her family and ends up on a world inhabited by another species that’s been fighting — and usually losing — against these monsters for centuries. There’s an entire universe of interconnected worlds at risk of annihilation and assimilation, with Earth as the latest frontier.
Facing the possibility of being stuck on an unfamiliar alien world while flesh constructs threaten her home and loved ones, Ella must see if she can turn what she’s always viewed as a curse into a weapon — as well as find allies and learn to eat new foods, skills she absolutely has and definitely does not struggle with. At all. Ever.
Join Ella and her new friends(?) as they fight to stay one step ahead of the biggest threat their universe has ever faced! Throughout the series you'll visit alien worlds, watch from a safe-ish distance as magic and biotechnology attempt to mix, ponder new ways to stim, and witness gay people doing gay things.
You can read the first few chapters right here, right now on my website. Please consider joining my mailing list while you're there!
Some quick details:
No AI has been used in this project - all drafting and content revision was done by myself, with a final pass made by a copyeditor, and cover art made by the fantastic Michael Plondaya.
This book is primarily intended for people 18 and older.
This book contains swearing, up to and including the F-word.
There are body horror elements.
The only spice in this book is of the neurospicy variety. There may be sex scenes later in the series; if there are, they will not be super spicy.
The autism and LGBTQ+ rep come from a neurodivergent lesbian author!
For any first-time crowdfunders, a quick run-down of how the platform works: Campaigns run during a set time period (in this case, Sept 16th-Oct 16th). In that time, the value of pledges are tracked, but backers aren't charged. If the total value of collected pledges passes the initial goal by the end of the campaign, then the project funds, your given method of payment will be charged, and I'll get to work on having your rewards ready to fulfill! You'll be sent a survey to fill out so I can get your shipping info if you pledged for a physical copy, your email if you pledged for an ebook, etc. If we don't pass the initial goal, the project doesn't fund. That means you won't be charged or receive the rewards you pledged for.
Backing Graft now means you can be one of the first to read the book! There will be a one month window between when ebooks are delivered, and when the book is available to purchase elsewhere. After that time, I'll be listing it on Amazon, Kobo, itch, my own website, and potentially other retailers, so if you miss the campaign, you can still get a copy!
Backers at any tier will have the option to list a name of their choice in the Acknowledgements section. You can use part or all of your full name, a nickname, an account name you use online, etc. Just nothing offensive, please and thank you. Ebooks will be delivered in epub format. This is a standard file for digital books that works well across the majority of ereaders and ebook apps (including Kindle, Kobo, and Nook devices; Kindle, Kobo, Nook, and Apple Books apps). Ebooks will be delivered as soon as paperbacks are ready to ship. Paperbacks are roughly 400 pages long and in 6 x 9 inch trim size. They will be available in standard and large print. Please note that at this time, international shipping into and out from the United States is increasingly complicated and prone to sudden rule changes; because of this, paperbooks will be available within the US, Canada, the UK, and within the EU. If you live in another region and would like to receive a physical copy, please reach out to me directly and I'll see what I can do to get one in your hands! For UK and EU customers, paperbacks will be processed through a printer in the UK and then shipped to you. This is largely due to concerns about meeting GSPR requirements, as well as the ever-changing tariff situation; on a more positive note, it means that your books will get to you quicker, cheaper, and without the environmental impact of needing to cross the entire Atlantic Ocean. All paperbacks will have the option for a personalized thank-you (or other) message either printed or hand-written at the start of the book; this will be part of the backer survey sent out post-campaign. Shipping is charged SEPARATELY, after the campaign ends.
Snag yourself the print and digital versions for a discounted price! Ebooks will be sent out as soon as paperbacks are ready to go, so you can get a head start while you wait for your package to arrive. Please see above note about regional availability for hard copies. Shipping is charged SEPARATELY, after the campaign ends.
Add-ons
Additional ebook and paperback copies will be available for the same price as add-ons!
The initial funding goal is primarily to help me recoup some of my investment in this book, such as cover art and formatting software. Money raised beyond that will go towards a mix of funding cover art for the rest of the series, and unlocking stretch goals!
Hardcover - $1000
With enough interest, we'll unlock hardcover copies as an option for y'all to buy!
Additional art - $1500
If we hit this goal, I'll run a poll to decide what you're all most interested in. In order to make this stretch goal available to everyone, regardless of region, the end result will either be incorporated into the book, or a digital download such as phone/desktop wallpapers.
And from there?
An audiobook edition is definitely something I have my eyes on if this campaign absolutely blasts off, but I'd love to get feedback from all of you on what you'd like to see from the campaign!
Achievements
Also keep an eye on the project's achievements. I'd love to create some additional short-form content for y'all if we hit enough backers - think short stories focused on the characters and world of Graft. These will be available digitally for all backers in the months following the campaign's finish.
Graft is about 95% ready to make its way into your hands! I hope to begin fulfillment by the start of next year, if not sooner - you know how shipping can get around the holidays. Here's my estimated timeline for project completion and fulfillment:
Sept 16-Oct 16 2025: Campaign runs! Rest of October: Final line edit checks are made to book. Backer acknowledgements section added. November: Ordering and review of proof copies December: Begin bulk order and fulfillment, hopefully getting ebooks into your hands in time for Christmas ;)
Shipping costs may fluctuate; these are estimates as of the end of August.
Within the US
Shipping for one or two paperbacks will be $5. Estimates for shipping more copies will be calculated on request.
To Canada
Shipping for one or two paperbacks is $12 USD. Estimates for shipping more copies will be calculated on request.
Within the UK and EU
Shipping for one or two paperbacks will be 8 euros/roughly $10. Estimates for shipping more copies will be calculated on request.
Again, if your region isn't represented here but you'd like to receive a physical copy, please reach out to me directly and I'll see what I can make happen for you.
If I can perhaps tempt you with a bit more of my bullshit, I'm also running a campaign in November as part of The Book Bazaar 2025. Honeycomb Heart is a pretty different vibe from Graft, but it still has fantasy fun and characters I'm sure you'll love, so if you're interested in some sapphic romantasy please consider checking out the teaser page here! There's even a sample chapter you can get a link to by following the project.
