Dungeon fantasy or space-opera sci-fi? Jewel in the Sky is two megadungeons in one, because you can play it either way!
And no matter how you play it, you'll discover interesting twists that take your players' imaginations to places they've never been.
Through what magic might a clever sorcerer turn a simple communication device into a weapon that threatens the entire world?
How can unquiet ghosts and fusion radiation possibly exist in the same world—and what happens when they mingle?
How does an AI cope when it finds itself abandoned on a planet where magic and spellcraft dominate?
How does a lone android survive when the magical energies of a strange new world begin to alter it both physically and mentally?
And how does a sleeping god react when these events begin to wake her?
Play Jewel in the Sky as a classic fantasy dungeon filled with strange and unusual discoveries. Or drop it into a space opera sci-fi game, and play as the visitors reclaiming their base on a world unlike any ever encountered. It’s specifically designed to play either way—and to deliver twists and surprises that will make this dungeon crawl a weird, exciting, and memorable adventure!
We love great products here at Monte Cook Games. Our books aren't just creative, inspiring, and strikingly beautiful—they're also amazingly usable, filled with clever and innovative features that make them a joy in play. They're well-organized, heavily indexed, and lavishly cross-referenced with callouts that put relevant info at your fingertips, no matter where you are in the book. The standard edition of Jewel in the Sky is a hefty hardcover book (and PDF) optimized for easy, quick use in prep and especially at the game table. It contains the entirety of the Jewel in the Sky mega-adventure for Cypher—an exciting, memorable campaign in a book filled with conveniences that make running this rich, complex adventure a joy!
Want to have a look? You can take a peek at a sample section. (This is from the current manuscript, and isn't final text. But you'll get a sense of how each section is laid out to maximize utility and minimize page-flipping.)
The exciting encounters and compelling story arc of Jewel in the Sky will be the stuff of legends in your gaming group. But shouldn't the entire experience to be just as cool? We're making an awesome boxed set edition of Jewel in the Sky exclusively for you, our backers of this campaign. It won't be widely available any other way, so you don't want to miss this. We'll take everything that makes the book awesome, and build from there, including:
The content of the standard edition, split into three separate books for easier reference
A poster map
A dozen+ additional map sheets
A bunch of evocative handouts
Dozens of creature, cypher, and intrusion cards
Character sheets for the whole party—both fantasy and sci-fi versions
Monte Cook (he/them) is a legend in the world of dungeon design. With an RPG design career filled with the credits of famous megadungeons, including (among many others) Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, Ptolus, Dungeon-a-Day, and, more recently, The Darkest House. Now he's delving back into the dungeon for the first time in years, bringing to bear all the innovation and creativity he's honed through projects like Numenera, Invisible Sun, Stealing Stories for the Devil, Cypher, No Thank You, Evil!, and The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game—and, further back in his storied career, D&D 3rd Edition, HeroClix, Arcana Evolved, a number of Planescape products, Call of Cthulhu d20, Monte Cook’s World of Darkness, and (going way back!) products for Rolemaster and Champions.
Monte is working closely with our Art Director, Bear Weiter (he/him), to make Jewel in the Sky as astonishingly easy on the GM as it is beautiful and striking. If you're familiar with MCG's many games, you know how we cherish RPG products that go above and beyond not just in presentation, but also in usability. Bear's genius brought us the amazing innovations in The Darkest House and The Darkest Woods, the elaborate amazements of the Invisible Sun Black Cube (quite possibly the most deluxe and feature-packed RPG product ever made), and the clear usability of products ranging from the Numenera Starter Set to No Thank You, Evil!
Monte and Bear are backed up by the illustrious and award-winning design team of Sean K. Reynolds (he/him), Shanna Germain (she/her), and Bruce R. Cordell (he/him), along with Graphic Designer Javier Beltrán (he/him), whose visual talents shine in products like The Devil's Dandy Dogs and The Weird. Rounding out the team that will bring you Jewel in the Sky are Managing Editor Teri Litorco (she/her), who wrangles the words and projects with the help of Associate Editor Dominique Dickey (they/them), and Kate Evans (she/her), Jennifer Walls (she/her), Tammie Ryan (she/her), Olivia Ryan (she/her), and Charles Ryan (he/him), who interact with our fans and customers and keep the business rolling along smoothly.
Monte's been at this for decades, and Monte Cook Games has been publishing highly praised, award-winning, innovative RPGs since 2012. We pride ourselves on works that are imaginative, fun, easy to play and GM, and beautiful—and crowdfunding campaigns that, for well over a decade now, have consistently delivered big and on time. We’re a small, values-driven company, but we deliver big!
Jewel in the Sky is the first major dungeon built from the ground up for Cypher, the popular, award-winning RPG system that's fast, flexible, and incredibly easy on the GM. If you're not already a Cypher fan, great news: we have pledge levels just for you that include the Cypher corebooks at a backers-only special price.
And here's some even better news: You're about to discover your new favorite game!
Cypher is built for the fun, fast-paced campaigns just itching to burst from your imagination and onto your game table. Players love their vivid, memorable characters that are easy to build, fun to play, and never bogged down in needlessly complex mechanics. GMs love running fun, fast-paced adventures and campaigns that bring their worlds to life without having to kludge the rules to make them fit.
And because it's so flexible, you can use Cypher to play Jewel in the Sky as a classic fantasy dungeon crawl, or an amazing sci-fi mega-adventure, with no kludges or special rules. It just works!
If you can imagine it, Cypher makes it easy!
The new edition of Cypher launches this summer. If the corebooks are among your rewards, we'll deliver them as soon as they're available—months ahead of Jewel in the Sky—so you can start running the campaigns of your dreams right away. In the meantime, you can download the Cypher Preview and get a taste of the game right now!
Play entirely online? Prefer to play Jewel in the Sky on your favorite VTT?
The VTT implementation of Jewel in the Sky includes complete compendium access to the book along with maps, interactive character sheets for both fantasy and sci-fi campaigns, tokens, and other assets. It does not include the Cypher rules, which will be available separately following the launch of the new edition this summer.
There are two ways to get Jewel in the Sky on VTT:
If that's all you want, there's a pledge level just for you. Pledge at the JEWEL ON VTT level.
If you want VTT access plus the beautiful deluxe boxed set or the physical book, pledge at the level that includes those items. Then add VTT access as an add-on.
The add-on price gives you a substantial discount, so the better deal is to get VTT support as an add-on to a different pledge level.
Regardless of how you pledge for it, you can get the VTT package for either Roll20 or Alchemy. You'll tell us which one you want in the pledge manager after the campaign ends. (If you want both, simply purchase the add-on again.)
Jewel in the Sky is one of many cool megadungeons being crowdfunded during BackerKit's Mega Dungeon Month event! In celebration, we're making a bonus PDF adventure where you explore old ruins on the surface above the dungeon!
Best of all, you can get a bonus reward for free! Just back two or more projects from Ghostfire Gaming, Goodman Games, Kobold Press, Loke Battle Mats, Monte Cook Games, Rowan Rook & Decard, or Troll Lord Games, you’ll get The Resonating Past in PDF free from us—and a bonus from the other campaigns you've backed as well!
You might encounter an AI in dank corridors of Jewel in the Sky, but we'll never use generative AI to make any of MCG’s products.
We make games that inspire us, with people who inspire us, for people who inspire us—so every word and image comes straight from our 100% human imaginations. We won’t insult your creativity, or ours, by delivering purposeless machine-generated drek, especially when we have so many great visions and ideas we’re excited to share with you!
You must receive email from us to claim your rewards! Modern mail clients and AI systems filter your email before you even get a chance to see it. Ensure that our emails are reaching you by marking any email from Monte Cook Games or BackerKit as a safe, trusted, or preferred sender, and adding us to your contacts. Simply replying to an email, or starring it, also helps train your email platform to let you see our emails. These steps help ensure that our emails reach your inbox. (We do send promotional emails, but we promise not to bury you in them. We average fifteen or twenty promo emails per year.)
Your digital rewards (PDFs) will be delivered using BackerKit’s Digital Distribution feature. When a digital reward is ready for you, you will receive a message via BackerKit with a link to download your digital reward. We will also deliver digital rewards through our online store and on DriveThruRPG, since many backers prefer to maintain their libraries of PDFs on one of those platforms. (You can use any or all of these platforms to download your PDFs; the files will be identical.)
Your physical rewards and add-ons will be delivered through our online store, the MCG Shop. When a physical reward is ready for you, you will receive a message sent through BackerKit with a link that will take you to the MCG Shop to pay for shipping and redeem your reward for free.
