Project Update: The Magic of ALOM - One Week Left

One Week Left

Apologies for the delay since our last update. Vidi and I were traveling to multiple conventions and then I was in the middle of a big move. But we're back!

So first, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported the project so far. The support has been incredible and we are so excited that there are so many people ready to build new and different fantasy worlds. We are over 200% funded and nearing our final big stretch goal—an upgrade for the ALOM notebook!

The book is going to be such a beautiful little object, we want to make a notebook that matches. If we hit this stretch goal, we'll be able to match the books lay-flat open spine format, upgrade the paper stock, and even add a spicy little bit of foil to the cover.

Preview: A Magic

With the new edition of this game, Viditya has reworked and added tables throughout the game. Here's a sneak peak at one of the central tables, A Magic, as well as some design thoughts from Viditya:
Layout not Final

One of the biggest additions I’m excited about is this table right here: ‘A Magic’. It’s the first thing you’ll do in the game, prefacing ‘A Legend’, and it’ll get your table brewing up the titular Magic right away!

I’ve been playtesting this table a lot and I’m very proud of it! This table exists because of previous playtests. Originally, Magic was only brought up when someone draws a face card on the ‘A World’ table, thus prompting one of 4 ‘The Magic That Was’ questions. I always thought it might be a little awkward that players would have to retroactively build into their world 1) a magic, 2) how it is integrated into the world, and 3) how it’s changing and making things worse in its absence. A lot to do in a single question! To my surprise, it forced people to get really weird with their Magic. I would have loved to get people thinking about it sooner.

This new table is what I’ve been calling an ‘Establishing Table,’ it’s not a question prompt table, it's sentence fragments you give meaning to. This new ‘A Magic’ table gives you the shape of what magic is and its importance to the foundations of society but doesn’t specify what it does. I wanted that to be deliberate so you don’t think ‘fireball’ when creating your world—“With it we could learn and master the laws of our world” rather than “With it we could control the elements.” Your magic has an origin, a utility, and, more importantly, this table now establishes how magic is changing.

A Land Once Magic creates a world in the midst of a crisis, where the magic foundational to society isn’t just disappearing, it is erupting violently or evolving outside our understanding. Similarly, like everything in this game, this table is presented like a story. “It is said that magic was…” Nothing is set in stone, history is fuzzy, a legend can be warped and why magic is changing can be approached from several angles and perspectives.

Draw 3 cards, compare the suits, and complete each sentence. Then tell me about the Magic of your world!

Final week, Final push!

We have one week left and we are going to keep pushing to make this the best game it can be! If you are excited about this game, tell a friend, tell your gaming group, tell your dad! Word of mouth is crucial to getting games like this in front of more people who will love it.

From a world full of changing magic,
