CURRENTLY FUNDING

Scion: Mythic Shards presents alternate realities for the World of Scion and provides new rules for players and Storyguides to incorporate into their games. Each chapter explores a single shard of reality at varying tiers of Scion gameplay. These chapters are standalone from each other and don’t need to be consumed with the other chapters in order to start playing.

Scion’s setting — the World — is an exciting place where heroes are larger than life, and Fate always lurks in the shadows, pulling strings. It is a place of urban fantasy where the legends and myths of our ancestors live in a world that’s much like our own.

But, there are some tales that belong to another world — stories that need another place to breathe and come alive — places like…

  • After the End: A post apocalyptic desert full of peril and opportunities for new beginnings
  • Cyber-Scion: A cyberpunk dystopia where Scions pilot mecha to fight corporate kaiju
  • Farewell to Heroes: Gritty noir cities where Scions are illegal
  • Four Color: A place of superheroes, alter-egos, and over-the-top excitement
  • Space Odyssey: An entire galaxy of starships and aliens

Project Update: June 2024 - Aegis Atlas preview

Hello Argonauts,

It's the Tuesday before the final Thursday of the month, and time for our regularly scheduled Trinity Continuum update. I've got the third in our series of Aegis Atlas previews for you today, so let's get right to the fun stuff!

Aegis Atlas Preview 3

Amulet of the New Face (Artifact •••)

Gifts: Cunning Hero’s Charade

Made of gold and lapis lazuli carved in the form of a stylized face, this useful item allows the wearer to appear to be any general sort of person they wish to be simply by imagining roughly how they wish to look, holding the amulet and spending a point of Inspiration. Someone could look like a strong-backed Nubian sailor, a wealthy Egyptian woman, or any other sort of person they can imagine. This disguise includes the appearance of clothes and similar accoutrements. The one limitation is that, when used in this fashion, it cannot disguise the wearer as a specific individual.

However, the amulet has a small hinged compartment in the back. If the wearer places a drop of blood, a few strands of hair, a fingernail clipping, or any other similar small piece of someone, the wearer can become an exact duplicate of this person. They don’t gain the person’s knowledge, but the user looks, sounds, and moves exactly like the individual in question. Note that this disguise is based upon whoever actually provided the material, not the person the wearer thinks it came from.

Used in either fashion, trivial characters have no chance of piecing this disguise; Inspired characters must use a Gift to see through it or make any roll to spot the deception at a Difficulty of 4.

The Cauldron of Life and Death (Artifact ••••)

Gifts: Balm of Healing, Children of the Hydra’s Teeth, Hand of Asclepius
Tags: Powered 3

This heavy bronze cauldron is large enough for a tall, muscular individual to easily fit inside. It is carved with vivid looking scenes of life, death, birth, and mystical rebirth from the cauldron. Healing someone of a recent injury or illness merely requires filling the cauldron with water, bringing it to a boil, and spending a point of Inspiration, either from the cauldron’s owner or from the cauldron’s innate power. The injured or sick individual must drink from it, gaining all the benefits of the Balm of Healing Gift. This cauldron can also cure old and congenital injuries or disabilities, but to do so, the individual must climb into the cauldron. The boiling liquid does them no harm, and each point of Inspiration spent to empower the cauldron entirely heals one disease, Injury, or other Condition, including anything from missing limbs to blindness. Finally, if someone is dying or has died within the last scene, then placing them in the cauldron and spending three points of Inspiration restores them to life if the user succeeds at a Medicine + Cunning check.

This wonder cannot bring anyone dead for longer back to life, but if the owner places fragments of corpses, or even just handfuls of human bones, then they can spend a point of Inspiration and make a Persuasion + Manipulation check to call forth the dead and add +2 Enhancement to this roll. At this point, a number of fully formed skeletal figures equal to the successes rolled climb from the cauldron. The rules for using these skeletons in combat are identical to the skeletons created by the Children of the Hydra’s Teeth Gift (Trinity Continuum Aegis, p. XX).

Depending upon the state of decay of the bodies or parts of bodies put in the cauldron, these skeletons may or may not have significant amounts of flesh attached to them. These skeletons are brutal and bloody warriors, killing without mercy and with a tendency to run wild and kill indiscriminately if not ordered to attack someone. Once the cauldron’s owner has no more use for these skeletons, they must make another Persuasion + Manipulation (also with +2 Enhancement) to return the spirits animating these skeletons to the underworld, at which point all of them instantly fall to dust.

Project Update: May '24 Update - Another Aegis Atlas Preview!

Hello Argonauts,

The Tuesday before last Thursday of each month is Trinity Continuum update day, and here we are! Why is it on a Tuesday? So that I can check the Monday Meeting Notes posted by Onyx Path each week to see if there's been any developments in the progress of our projects!

Let's celebrate Trinity Continuum update day with another Aegis Atlas Preview!

Aegis Atlas Preview 2

Armor

The best conventional armor of the era is heavy and only moderately protective, but ambrosia-infused wonders can do far more.

Full Plate (Artifact •••)

Base: Composite (Impact Resistant, Slash Resistant)
Edges: Armor Expert •
Tags: Composite, Hard 3, Soft 2, Steel

Well ahead of its time in Greece’s Dark Age, this suit of full plate grants the wearer a distinct advantage over her opponents’ bronze weapons. Clad from head to toe in steel, her appearance on the battlefield signals a grueling fight to come. Creating this armor requires knowledge of producing high-quality steel and techniques for turning it into well-tempered, easy-to-wear, and exceedingly durable armor.

Jaguar Armor (Artifact ••••)

Gifts: Become Invisible, Put on The Beast’s Shape
Edges: Free Running •••, Swift
Enhancement: 1
Tags: Melee (Edged), Quality 2, Soft Armor 2

Created by the Mesoamerican Oracle and priestess Yuritzi, this armor is made from jaguar skin that is soaked in ambrosia as part of the tanning process. Yuritzi outfitted an elite group of a dozen Inspired jaguar knights with this armor, to better protect them from the monstrous chimerae stalking the wilderness.

By spending a point of Inspiration, the wearer transforms into a jaguar. In addition to gaining claws and a tough hide, the wearer moves with the great cat’s swiftness and agility, increasing her Speed Scale by 1. She can pursue foes across difficult terrain without slowing and feels as at home up in the trees as on the ground.

The wearer may also spend a point of Inspiration to become invisible in either human or jaguar form. This doesn’t muffle sounds she makes or hide her scent, but as long as she moves at a walk, none can detect her. This effect ends if she attacks someone or makes a loud noise.

Royal Armor of Colchis (Artifact •••••)

Gifts: Hermes Cloak, Shield of Ambrosia, Godly Aegis
Edge: Armor Expert
Tags: Composite, Steel, Soft 2, Hard 3, Heroic

Considering it their greatest work to date, the Colchian blacksmith Pero gifted this armor to Queen Medea on the anniversary of her coronation. The suit’s exquisite design incorporates particularly fine steel, making it exceptionally light and easy to move in. Without spending any Inspiration, it provides 3 points of soft and hard armor and keeps the wearer comfortable in any extremes of climate, allowing them to fight in blazing heat or bitter cold without ill effect. Activating the Shield of Ambrosia increases its soft armor to 5 points, and activating the Godly Aegis Gift allows the wearer to withstand any single attack or other source of damage without harm. The wearer can only use Godly Aegis once per session.

Superior Armor Padding (Artifact ••)

Gift: Hermes Cloak
Edge: Armor Expert
Tags: Composite (Impact Resistant, Slash Resistant), Hard Armor 1

This modest artifact is designed to be worn under metal armor, making the armor both more comfortable and significantly more effective. While the wearer cannot spend Inspiration to enhance this item, it provides one additional point of both soft and hard armor to any armor the wearer dons and prevents the wearer from being hurt, hindered, or discomforted by mundane extremes of temperature or weather.

At the Gates is a high fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about burgeoning heroes struggling to survive, fighting for what’s right, exploring dangerous places, and saving the world.

Magic fuels all parts of Gaia, from fields of wheat to the people who sow them. Magic is rooted in the living nature of the world: the elements, the mind, the body, and the soul. The Void stands outside the world, and represents all the esoteric concepts such as order, entropy, and energy. Where the Void meets the world, Outlands grow. These places are warped by the intermingling of two opposite magics, and everything that lives there is tainted and dangerous. Hidden inside these Outlands are gates into the Void, standing as literal tears in reality.

You play as heroes who have chosen to buck the status quo and try to change the course of things. Your characters may attempt to change the course of the war, delve into the secrets of daemons and the Void, fight against tyranny to protect what they love in the world, fight to restore balance to Gaia, or all the above.

You can stand at the gates and hold back the tide, changing the course of history. Will you heed the call?

Project Update: April '24 Update - Aegis Atlas Preview

Hello Argonauts,

No big changes to our progress tracking this month, work continues behind the scenes. But I do have a preview from our big Stretch Goal projects for you today! We're going to spend our next three updates taking a look at the Aegis Atlas!

Aegis Atlas Preview 1

Colchis

Colchis was wealthy long before stars fell and ambrosia blessed the earth. Previously, it was a wealth born of fertile earth and gold deposits. Now, under the Oracle and inventor Queen Medea, Colchis measures its wealth in ideas. The queen gathers philosophers, craftspeople, enchanters, and other experts around her, filling her capital city of Aea with great minds.

Aea is the seat of the Masters of Colchis, the College led by Medea herself. Once a meager town, it has rapidly evolved into a well-defended citadel guarded by mechanical marvels the Masters of Colchis hammer into existence. Those marvels range from spring-operated clocks to huge, golden automata, the most famous of which are the dragons. Unlike the winged serpents that command the skies above Shang, Colchis’s dragons are mechanical in nature. They perch on Aea’s walls and patrol its skies or lumber out to battle, where they belch clinging Greek fire on Colchis’s enemies. Some smaller ones draw chariots, both in battle or for private transport. The dragons have proved their mettle in combat only in support of Colchis’s allies; their existence has so far proved an excellent deterrent against attacks on Colchis itself.

Aea’s famous for its workshops and forges, its walls and sentinels... and its canals of ambrosia, channeled underground to flow into a cistern beneath Medea’s palace, where it’s dispensed liberally and freely to Colchis’s craftspeople. The canals aren’t the only sources of ambrosia in Colchis — they abound in pools and streams in remote mountains and meadows. Medea argues that she doesn’t control it; as such, she simply makes sure it’s shared efficiently.

Part of the sharing is granting permission for talented inventors and engineers to descend into the cistern and inhale the vapor that rises off the concentrated pools of ambrosia, creating more Oracles to add to Colchis’s pool of talent. It’s not a perfect process — some people inhale the vapor but are not Inspired, and some become Olympians or Champions. Those individuals are welcome to remain in Colchis, finding roles amongst its protectors, but they never achieve the status and respect granted to Oracles.

In spite of Medea’s open approach to the study and creation of new technologies, plenty of people would rather take from Colchis than contribute to and share in its success. Colleges and kingdoms send spies and thieves into Aea in hopes of pilfering blueprints or machines they can study and improve on themselves. No doubt some are successful, but Medea keeps a meticulous record of all the failed attempts she and the Masters of Colchis uncover. Jason of Iolcus’s brazen attempt to steal Medea’s favorite creation, her golden ram, tops the list for its ignominious resolution. Rather than simply purloin the automaton, Jason tried to steal Medea’s heart and thereby gain access to everything Colchis had to offer. Accounts vary as to how close he came to victory; when Medea tells the story, she says she saw through him instantly and strung him along for a while. People close to her imply Jason was more successful than Medea lets on. Whichever version is true, Jason and his compatriots are no longer welcome in Colchis — which doesn’t stop him from sending agents to do what he failed to.

People of Interest

  • Medea: Medea has a vision of a nation — nay, an entire world — governed by the wisest and best among humanity. Thanks to her passion and her nearly bottomless treasury, she’s advancing ever closer to her goals. But while she’s focused on exploring just how much Inspired minds can shape the world and on her own marvelous creations like her golden ram automaton, she leaves many affairs of state to her counselors, who she assumes are loyal to her. While many are, philosophers and engineers are no better or more ethical than any other group of people, and plenty of them seek to exploit Medea’s vision for their own ends. Colchis is one crisis away from losing faith in its leader, and plenty of people make plans to replace her if she stumbles.
  • Pateis: Pateis inhaled the vapors of Ambrosia and grew strong — and charming, and handsome. It gave him many gifts, in fact, but it didn’t make him an Oracle. As long as he’s in Colchis, he’ll never have the influence he craves. Pateis is the heir to a merchant family, part of Colchis’s elite. But since the sky chariot fell, Queen Medea listens to her pet philosophers and inventors, valuing their insights over those of her own people. Medea herself would say that’s because Pateis has nothing wise or insightful to offer; he’s simply a demagogue. He’s an effective one, and he’s gathered several other like-minded people. So far, they daren’t move against Medea, but that time will come — once they’ve gathered enough wonders and engineers to rival her own.

Many Colchians who aren’t engineers or enchanters feel devalued in Queen Medea’s new world. Some wealthy farmers use their fortunes to fund creators and thereby purchase status; others resent the way their voices are drowned out by newcomers. The Champion Pateis gathers a group of rich dissenters, supported by Champions and Olympians, who plan to overthrow Medea and hand back some power to a council of rich Colchians. They have no intention of throwing out the Masters of Colchis — they’ve made Colchis extremely rich — they just want to bring them to heel in service of the aristocracy.
