Hey folks! Out amazing editor ChrisAiriau (Not Enough Scoundrels, Bio-Drones and Cryo Clones, and others) is working on the helping us revise the text for both clarity and word choice. Some of this is going to necessitate reworking layout we've already done, but we want Straight Arrows to be more than a pretty shelf trophy. We don't have a hell of a lot to show visually that's we've done as we are waiting for the layout to proceed with art so we make sure there is room. Unfortunately, we're a little behind on account of this, but we are committed to a reasonable turnaround while still giving you the highest quality module we can.
Hey folks! There's a good bundle of digital TTRPG products on itch.io right now.
Baltimore, the city in question, is training street medics with the funds raised. Go and support them! Baltimore is a great city full of a lot of great people. It partially inspired Hewitt Spring and we will probably be featuring causes that help places and people that have influenced our writing and design process.
Sorry for the late update. Ryan, the writer, had to have a lot of dental work done in February. Additionally, our copy editor had to leave the project abruptly. That said, over all things are going well!
Right now we have two big pieces of good news:
The draft is DONE! Well... done-ish?
We've run 10 (!!!!!) playtesting sessions and have hammered out the mechanics. Check out some of the recaps on the Mothership discord in the after action reports channel!
Wait, what does done-ish mean?
Well, this project was intended to be a lot shorter... but have more content and more art. Two things that are obviously mutually exclusive. This happened because Ryan is TERRBILE at estimating page count. We are currently looking at a roughly 60page layout outline, once all the text is put on paper and given room to breathe and interspersed with art. The reason we say it is "done-ish" is because there are a few short, minor sections we'd like to it in, but it really depends on what we can fit into the zine without making it too thick to staple. We are going to be taking a serious look at what additional, nonessential content from the outline we can tetris into the layout once we get further along. As I'm sure y'all know by now, this is a work of passion for all of us on the team. If we could fit everything in, without ruining the centerfold or overwhelming you with TL;DR nonsense, we would.
Speaking of writing...
Once we've done some copy editing, we'll be previewing more of it. Our first priority are the patient generator and the premade, VIP patient missions. Those, large chunks of the zine are going to determine how much we can fit in elsewhere. Additionally, we really, really, want to make sure we convey the crunch in a way that is easy to digest.
Last we updated y'all, we were about to send out the bulk of the surveys. We sent out a few as part of our Smoke Test, and we are going to send the rest out once we've solved a minor issue or two.
On to the actual zine, after play testing and handing off the manuscript to another Warden to read and playtest, we've gotten some great feed back! We decided to pivot from finishing the random tables for character and investigation generation, and turn back to revise the general mechanics of the procedures themselves. The system is strong, but we want to make sure that it's both easier to follow and a little tidier mechanically. We want to focus on creating dynamic missions that don't feel like they were just a set of random charts rolled behind the scenes. To that end, we are tweaking the systems and holding off on some of the tables. All of that said, three missions were generated procedurally and went over well with the players.
Speaking of another Warden playtesting, we gave the current version to another 3rd party Mothership RPG creator. They're help in identifying points needing clarification and ambiguous mechanics is going to be instrumental in polishing up the drafted investigation mechanics. An expert warden, they have run the first session for a crew of 6, all retrievers. They were able to complete the mission but came to the attention of Null Soul. Stay tuned for more details about the recap!
We're still revising the draft, but haven't finished all of the rest. Mechanics still need work. Playtesting continues. Is there anywhere we're ahead of schedule though? Yes, actually.
Check out these spreads!
For the burnt paper effect, Ryan... burnt some paper. That's it. That was the trick.
Burnt and Quenched
We have a few more spreads we could show off, but we don't want to spoil everything just yet. All of this is subject to change.
