Danger Creeps

Blackthorn is a roleplaying game designed to collaboratively tell pulp horror stories. It's not a game where player characters are destined to be the heroes, but rather one about the highs and lows characters experience when confronted with a seemingly insurmountable terror. It is deadly, in and out of high-tension moments, and dripping with horror.

The mechanics support lethal one shots where players will likely need to pick up a second character after their first perishes. Character deaths are always meaningful and an important factor of advancing the story. Characters rise to the occasion and fall short, strategize with no prior experience and are slain by terrors. Sometimes, they overcome the beasts, and sometimes they play through the origin story of a future nightmare.

What's Inside Blackthorn

  • Player-facing rolls, quick character creation, and exhilarating combat rules with a horror-centric wounds system.
  • Quick character creation focused on building ordinary citizens with unique drives and faults that enable engaging narratives.
  • 12 Drives, Occupations, Faults, and Pastimes.
  • Player and GM principles that support lethal and collaborative storytelling.
  • Narrative guidance for using jump scares and ending the story.
  • A complete one shot in the back of the zine so you can jump straight into play.

The Pamphlet Adventures

We're pairing up with a couple of our favorite horror one shot adventure writers in order to provide a range of terrifying modules!

Belfast Vampire Massacre by Joshua Justice. A deeply horrifying vampiric blood bath drawing inspiration from Irish lore among other sources.

Murder Birds by Marco Serrano. After a ship carrying exotic zoo-bound animals crashes on the Connecticut coast, a vicious shock of cassowaries systematically kill off the animals shipped alongside them and the locals caught in their rampage.

Rite of Passage by M. Allen Hall. Local teenagers disappear in the forest surrounding Pembrook. When the adults band together for a rescue mission, they quickly find themselves entangled in the deadly games of the forest's psychic fungus.

Additionally, backers of the Blackthorn + Adventure Bundle tier will receive all Stretch Goals and the They Escaped From the Sea one-page adventure. Zombies rise from the sea floor in search of human sacrifices to bring to their old master.

Father Fly. Drone cultists take people from a small town in order to appease their fly lord, and enable its next mutation.

> Please Note: Only the Blackthorn + Adventure Bundle Pledge Level will receive unlocked stretch goals included with their pledge.
