The fragile paper manages to stay together while you scoop up two unique ningyo, japanese mermaids! (or rather, “people fish”)
What are Ningyo?
Ningyo are a mermaid-like creature in Japanese folklore. Like most Yokai stories, they vary heavily and change with time. The part that never changed is that Ningyo are Fish with Human Faces. Some had human limbs of varying amounts, while many were completely fish-bodied. They were often noted as having bright red hair like a roosters comb. Much of the lore surrounding Ningyo has to do with them washing or fished up and startling people, and that consuming their flesh brings you eternal life or health. Probably the most famous story about Ningyo is Yao Bikuni (lit. 800 year old nun), about a girl who consumed ningyo flesh and lived for 800 years, becoming a devoted nun with her long lifespan. My ningyo was inspired by the “Ningyo no zu” woodblock print from 1805, and the tale of Jinja Hime, who is sometimes classified as a Ningyo.
Kingyo Sukui
This is a game from Edo period Japan that has a familiar idea to many across the globe. Americans may have fished for a rubber duck or tossed a ball in a cup of water to win a goldfish at county fairs before. The primary difference? Better hurry, or your “net” will melt! In Kingyo Sukui (lit. “goldfish scooping”), you use Poi, a flat net with thin paper. Take too long to make a catch, the paper falls apart! If you win, your prize is your catch in a little bag to take home.
