Why We Fight - a solarpunk narrative TTRPG

Why We Fight - a solarpunk narrative TTRPG

Why We Fight is a 1-5 player narrative TTRPG where you play a crew of eco-punks fighting fascism to build a brighter, greener future. But most of all, it’s about learning about each other, and the things that drive us to make change.

Why We Fight - An anti-fascist TTRPG about creating a solarpunk future.

In Why We Fight you will each build a Crew of 4 characters from the Community Alliance, a growing movement of eco-punk communities creating a more just and compassionate world.
You'll learn who they are and what they care about as you discover vibrant communities, and a natural world untamed. Travel through rewilding lands, safe-guard people and nature, and push back against the White Fist, a fascist militia trying to force people back into their dystopian society.

GMless, designed for soloplay and up to five players, with zero-prep. You’ll have a Crew and Mission started within 15 minutes, allowing you to save lives, prevent disaster and create a new balance.

Get Creative on the go and gain the advantage even as the underdog in fast-paced, tactical, guerrilla style combat where your enemies adapt to your actions as they fight to complete their own Objectives.

"The system cracked long before it crumbled, holes designed to swallow the different and dissenting..."
Edit

Community Alliance hubs have bloomed across the land, safe havens for all who need us, and any willing to stand up for our humanity.

Whether it's building community gardens or solar energy grids, rewilding golf courses or caring for those who need us, we're building the world we wanted from the start. A world where nobody has to "earn" their right to live. Where "how do I get by?" is replaced with "how do we make it better?". We’ve spread through cities and forests alike, putting the means to thrive into any hands willing to hold it, to nurture the spark of this brighter future.

Together we are creating a network of safety for all, because the idea that there isn’t enough to go around is a fallacy spewed to keep us hungry. We might not be able to have it all, but we can make sure all have enough.

So we will keep pushing back, freeing the shackled, teaching the eager, and caring for our planet.

You'll play a Community Alliance "Crew", a ragtag band of eco-punks focused on saving lives, building trust, and creating stability in a post-civil-war landscape.

As you play, you will learn more about your crew, but they start off as strangers even to you. Each crew member has a name, two descriptors, and a skill they specialise in. One of them will have the reason they're fighting. As you travel together and push back the white fist, you will uncover more about these characters, discovering their pasts, passions and fears, while you help shape their future.
Together, we will rebuild this world, and use the ashes of the old to fertilise the soil of the new.

Edit
The old ways are clawing back, and if nobody stands up to beat back the White Fist, a hedge-fund backed fascist militia trying to take control, there'll be no stopping them! These paramilitary brutes strike vibrant, prosperous communities, burning crops and stealing precious supplies, bodies left in their wake. The spectres of starvation and sickness plague the recovering lands. People are becoming desperate.

Orchestrated by the manipulative Guiding Hand, they've set up 'Protectorates', steel walled compounds that opened their doors and promised food, clothes, shelter, medical care, and the safety of law and order… all for the price of labour.

Yet how much food is your labour worth? Whose labour is worth the better homes, the few luxuries they import in? When is someone worth the medical care to save them? The Guiding Hand, proclaiming itself limited by those anarchic scavengers outside the walls, control their people with the very scarcity they've created. All the while, the goods their workers make depart across the oceans in boats and planes to grease the palms of those in charge.

You may be out numbered and out-gunned, but with careful co-operation you'll use opportunities to strike Vital Operations and strip them of their power, stopping them before they entrench their cruel regime.

The Community Alliance knows if the White Fist aren't stopped, their slave-state Protectorates will only grow!

How to play

Create your Crew

Put together a Crew in under 10 minutes, they'll pool their diverse range of skills and experience to save lives and face down the White Fist!

Grow together = Overthrow together

You’ll develop your Crew as they travel, shaped and empowered by their experiences and unique personalities, and better overcome the challenges ahead. You'll record this journey in your Mission Journal!

What’s the Situation?

Whether it’s helping civilians get by in a war torn world, protecting the land with its new chance to flourish, or fighting back for a chance at something better, you’ll face a variety of challenges on your way to your goal.

An inspirational journey

Handle what you discover your way, combining your Crew’s specialties and personalities to make a difference, balancing risk and reward, and maybe even reach your mission with something to help you turn the tables.

Disrupt a White Fist operation

Finally you’ll reach your destination—a vital part of the White Fist’s operations—and overcome the challenge in your effort to uproot the oppression that threatens everyone’s freedom.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

You’ll be out numbered and out gunned, but with careful planning, close co-operation, and working with the strengths of your new-found comrades, you might just have what you need to push them back!

Are you ready to get out there and make a difference? Okay, here's how we do it!

Everyone who backs BOTH games will receive Collective Action, a game duet that showcases how Assemblage can be used to create settings for other TTRPGs, and the expansive possibilities of crew creation and group action in new environments and scenarios in Why We Fight.
This exclusive expansion content includes two PDFs and a set of print-and-play cards inviting you to create and play as both a group of humans encountering a weird ecology, and as that ecology experiencing the incursion of a group of humans.
Use the Assemblage world-building framework to create a unique ecosystem on an island located in the world of Why We Fight — and use Why We fight’s crew creation framework to create a team of scientists investigating that weird ecology
Then use the print-and-play cards to “duet” the crew’s actions and the ecology’s unique response.

Meet the Team!

Laurie Blake - Lead designer

I'm an AuDHD multi-disciplinary creator who's games all wind up being anti-capitalist. Even if I really try! So it's not surprising that I'm also a grass-roots solarpunk anarchist who loves how games create community and shared experiences.
When I'm not making or playing games (pretty rare, honestly) I'll be reading the weirdest sci-fi I can find (Mieville my beloved, you truly warped my taste in books), listening to post-rock, punk, synthwave, or anything with horn melodies, and learning about obscure subjects and historical moments!

Rhi Saunders - Developer and socials

I'm a queer, neurodivergent, disabled and chronically ill nerd whose connective tissue was tragically replaced with silly string... Not only am I the social media menace at SDR, I also help write and develop the games we make! When this meatsuit of mine lets me, I love getting out into nature, curling up with a good book and my fuzzy dog, or creating art. Above all else, I adore exploring stories!
I have a degree Creative Writing and a Masters in Animal Behaviour which legally gives me the power to rename any animal. Got suggestions? Drop them to me at the socials below!

Rob Ingle - Graphic Design & Illustration

I'm a bearded oaf and proud father. Daydreamer, doodler and card carrying luddite. Draws things. Paints things. Thinks things. When not doing one or several of these, I'll be found hanging with my amazing daughter, my lovely lady or various chums, supping an ale and reading something suitably nerdy, painting tiny little models, playing boardgames or lying supine in a bewildered daze.
