Things are looking good in Hootin' Holler!
Well, we'll know next Monday whether that whistlepig up in Punxsutawney sees his shadow and declares six more weeks of winter, but here in the snowy foothills, we're thinking...
Thank you all for a successful crowdfunding campaign! Whistlepig Breakdown is funded and ready for printing. We picked up the "proof" this morning and based on the initial flip-through, it looks good. Don't take my word for it, take a look-see yourself.
Surveys will probably go out later today or this weekend depending on how the test surveys go. I sent out a few test surveys this morning, so a handful of you may have already gotten them.
After the surveys come back, we can start working on fulfillment. The final pdf is already uploaded to DriveThruRPG, so sending out the digital copies is just a few clicks away. Mailing out the printed copies always takes a bit more time, of course.
Finally, the kind folks at Goodman Games are planning to have copies of Whistlepig Breakdown in their online store, so if you know anybody who missed the campaign but would like a copy, be sure to send them over to www.goodman-games.com.
Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far! If you're still thinking about backing, now is the time because there are only a few days left in the campaign. Not much has changed since the last update because the book is done and we're just waiting on the final count to send it to the printer.
So, I'm just going to say a quick word about layout and then give you a peak at what's inside. We worked hard on the layout not only to give you a good looking book, but also to make sure that what you need is easy to get to. The maps are in the front and back covers. And, when you run an encounter, all of your stat blocks and important information are on the same page.
Enough chatter, here's a look see . . .
And here's a spread from early on in the book. . . I hope you're as excited as we are to get Whistlepig Breakdown to your table!
So, thinking about Brendan LaSalle's excellent Shudder Mountains holiday adventure, Came the Monsters of Midwinter gave me an idea. Maybe Whistlepig Breakdown is also a holiday module, but for Groundhog Day.
Hear me out . . .
Whistlepig Breakdown has a woodchuck named Phil. Check.
Whistlpig Breakdown has folks seeing their shadow. Check.
You'll want to play Whistlepig Breakdown every day on repeat! Check!
There ya go! Be sure and get your copy of Whistlepig Breakdown, and be prepared to celebrate Groundhog Day in fine DCC style next year! Y'all have a pleasant holiday and may Spring be just around the corner!
Be sure to read about my cracker-barrel chat with Stefan Surratt over at Dragon Peak Publishing about Whistlepig Breakdown. I've been a fan of Stefan's work for a while and have been enjoying reading through his campaign book, The Conquest of Chaos. I recommend subscribing to Stefan's substack, if you haven't already.
In the interview, Stefan asks me about the inspiration for Whistlepig Breakdown, my pitch for roleplaying in the Shudder Mountains, and a whole lot more. I won't repeat any of the interview here, since I know you'll read it if you're interested, but I will add a few thoughts on what I said there about the Shudder Mountains as a setting.
The pitch I made to Stefan was really the argument I would make to someone (like most of us) with a history of gaming in a mostly Tolkeinesque or similar settings with dragons and knights. The pitch to someone new to tabletop RPGs is a little different. Some folks who just aren't sure how to roleplay a dwarf or a cleric, will throw themselves into the character of a hearty mountain man or a smilin' fast-talkin' preacher. It's about familiarity. You don't need to know anything more than you already know to have fun in a Shudder Mountains game. So, even if you didn't grow up trading dog-eared novels from Appendix N with your friends, you probably know the Appalachian or Americana tropes of the Shudder Mountains.
So, gather some friends for an evening of good 'ol Shudder Mountians story-tellin'. Whether they've been at the table a hundred times or this is their first, the Shudders will fit like a pair of well-worn boots.
Well, we'll know next Monday whether that whistlepig up in Punxsutawney sees his shadow and declares six more weeks of winter, but here in the snowy foothills, we're thinking the thaw is a fair bit off yet. No matter, Whistlpig Breakdown is funded so we're feeling all warm inside!
A big 'thank you' to everyone who has backed the project so far! That goes for the folks who have been with us since we started a few years ago as well as those who just joined us. Folks can still join in through February 17, so let your friends know, if they might be interested.
The good news is that the project is ready to go to the printer. I worked out the last few issues last weekend and converted the layout files to final pdfs. I'm talking to the printer this week and the only thing I can't tell them is exactly how many copies to run. Can't wait to see it in print!
While we're waiting, here's a drawing our artist Greg Lambert did that you might enjoy taking a look at. Hoo-ee, that wyrmchuck sure is smokin'!
