Thoughts on Reading RPGs
I used to consider myself one of those folks who reads far more RPGs than they’ll ever play, but then I got to thinking about what counts as “playing an RPG.” I don’t have a great answer yet - maybe I never will - but if I’m reading through an RPG and it is inspiring ideas, it has me thinking about the setting, it has me excited about the game mechanics… it feels a lot like I’m already playing. For SotS I wanted to create a book that not only offers play in the traditional sense but also creates a play environment for those who are enjoying the game by reading through it. I hope it successfully supports however you like to play your RPGs.
A Review of Song of the Scryptwyrm
I like creating games that are accessible to kiddos as well as adults, so it’s always great to hear I’ve achieved that. There is now a review of SotS from TTRPGkids.com that not only dives into the game itself but also player age range considerations:
It has a very all-ages vibe (so, young players and adults) with the reading level being probably about 4th grade and up (which is the point in many US schools where students are expected to be able to effectively read for learning other topics versus learning how to read).
For playing with younger kids or kids who are still learning to read, it is totally possible to play this as a duet...
RPG + Legos (and other toys)!
And speaking of great games for all ages, you can also check out the new TTRPGkids.com for a review of InfiniBrix, a rules light, story-first tabletop game that helps families and friends of all ages tell wild, wonderful stories and play epic action scenes with their own construction bricks and minis. Pop over to the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that’s underway now to learn more!
Cross-Collab Goodness
Finally, if you’ve not already done so, please check out the BackerKit project from TTRPGkids (who are also my cross-collab partner): Greeting Games! They just reached stretch goal #7, which means they’ll be donating even more games to libraries through International Games Month 2025. This has also opened up goal #8: hiring an artist to illustrate a short set of adventures about a cat who travels through books!
Thanks again,
Dan / Almost Bedtime Theater
