We've gotten questions about President-Elect Trump's plan to impose 60%-100% tariffs, since our printing partner for Ars Magica Definitive Edition is in China. None of this should affect the digital editions.

We don't believe tariffs will block delivery of this campaign to backers. We may need to change details of how we handle fulfillment, but a successful direct-to-consumer crowdfunding campaign like this gives us the margin to deal with the unexpected.

Retail release through distribution may not be possible, since retailers get a big discount on MSRP. Our usual strategy is to manufacture enough of a product for both a crowdfunding campaign's fulfillment and 1-3 years of sales into distribution. If tariffs are enacted or imminent, we may have to cancel general market distribution, because we can't offer it at a reasonable retail price if our printing bill effectively doubles. We'll still supply the games to retailers who back this campaign, but very likely wouldn't be able to produce the extras we'd need for ongoing sales to game distributors and game stores.

At this point nothing is certain. We don't know when tariffs might be imposed, what goods exactly they would be imposed on, or how exactly how high the tariffs might be. Remember that last time Trump was in office, they were imposed on various categories over time, and never made it to books and board games.

But we want to make sure folks are aware, at this point we can’t guarantee that Ars Magica Definitive Edition will be available in general distribution beyond this crowdfunding campaign. We have to be realistic, and that means preparing for the possibility that this may have to be a one-time release. Thank you for understanding our situation.
