How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.
To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.
All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.
Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.
Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.
When will I be charged for my pledge?
Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.
What happens after the campaign is over?
The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.
Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.
Project FAQ
How will we receive our digital rewards?
BackerKit, our fulfillment partner, will distribute your digital rewards directly to the email address to which your order is registered. Customers can access their digital rewards through their survey link or backer portal. It is encouraged that you set up a BackerKit profile during or immediately after the campaign to avoid any setbacks with accessing your rewards. Please reach out to BackerKit if you used a different email address as the system will not recognize your pledge.
Will these rewards be exclusive to BOOM! Direct Reserve customers?
While DUNE: HOUSE ATREIDES, DUNE: HOUSE HARKONNEN, DUNE: HOUSE CORRINO, & DUNE: TALES FROM ARRAKEEN will be made available through comic shops, bookstores, and myriad locations where books are commonly discovered, the exclusive cover artwork along with any upgrades and embellishments unlocked through Stretch Goals will be exclusive to copies reserved through this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign, limited to their initial print run, and never-to-be reprinted again. BOOM! Studios reserves the right to offer BOOM! Direct Reserve items in extremely limited quantities via other direct sales channels at a later date. The most likely example of this is if a limited tier does not completely sell out during the BackerKit campaign. All limited tiers are strictly limited to the quantity advertised in this campaign, and that no BOOM! Direct Reserve item or package will be offered for less than the price available through this campaign. More importantly, this is the first and only chance to make sure your copy is reserved and delivered directly to your home.
What will the shipping costs be?
Shipping will be charged via BackerKit after the end of the campaign, after the survey period ends. You will be informed via BackerKit about when this will occur. See the Shipping & Fulfillment section of our campaign page for additional details. These costs are estimates based on the information currently available and will be charged through BackerKit, after our fulfillment partners communicate the best shipping rates available to us at that time.
Why am I being charged an additional amount for international customs?
Customs are the sovereign law of a country on imports or exports. Any duties, taxes, and customs clearance fees that may be levied on a BOOM! Direct Reserve shipment as a result will be the responsibility of the customer. Please note that Total Shipping costs reflect the total you will pay for shipping and handling for your reward(s). For international orders, please note that while BOOM! Studios ships packages DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) your country may have additional VAT fees or customs duties which BOOM! Studios does not collect in advance. You will be 100% responsible for any of those fees should they be applied, and BOOM! Studios will not refund any international orders that are refused due to VAT or customs fees beyond our control.
When and where do I provide my shipping info?
Once this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign successfully concludes, we will reach out with a survey via BackerKit to request all of the information needed to fulfill your rewards, including your shipping address. We will post updates on the campaign as surveys become available. Additionally, we will reconfirm your shipping address prior to releasing each shipping wave.
I have moved since the campaign was completed. How do I update my mailing address?
In Your BackerKit Account, click 'Settings' at the top of the page, and then click 'Update Address' - this will update your shipping details for all of your unlocked surveys. To update your shipping information, click on your BackerKit survey confirmation link that was sent to your email. If you need this link to be resent, please go to the survey recovery page. If your address is open, you will be able to see and click 'Edit Shipping Info' to update your shipping details. To update the country or state, please contact support for assistance. Since project creators charge different shipping rates depending on the country/state, only our admin team can update this information. Pro-tip: Some customers are able to get their country and state to change by updating their Zip Code! If your address is locked, please contact BackerKit for assistance with your new shipping details for fastest resolution! To contact the BackerKit support team, in your survey click 'Need help?' on the top right corner, and then select 'Contact Us' from the left sidebar to reach out to our team for assistance. Please note: We will issue multiple notices when fulfillment for this campaign is imminent. If you fail to update your address before your rewards are shipped and they are delivered to an incorrect or previous address, BOOM! Studios will be unable to refund or replace your order, due to the limited quantities manufactured and expense incurred in doing so. You are responsible for maintaining the accuracy of your own address and mailing information in order to receive your purchase.
I missed filling out my survey. What should I do?

When will I be charged for my reserved order?
After the BackerKit campaign ends, BackerKit will charge you for your pledged amount. If there are any problems with your payment method, BackerKit will reach out to you to have the issue corrected and your payment charged. Any add-ons or upgrades added to your reserved order, after the BackerKit campaign ends, will be charged through BackerKit at the same time we charge for shipping. The exact date will be communicated through an Update on the BackerKit page, post campaign.
When will I be charged for shipping?
Shipping fees are charged at the discretion of BOOM! Studios after the completion of surveys and before fulfillment. Typically, these fees are charged 90 or more days before fulfillment begins. BOOM! Studios makes best efforts to communicate the exact timing of shipping charges in advance through campaign updates. However, the exact timing of charges is subject to change.
I haven't received any information or updates about this campaign. How can I address this issue?
We regularly share updates on the BackerKit page every month once the active campaign has concluded. These updates include information about the campaign's status, sneak peeks, and notifications regarding fulfillment. Make sure to check the BackerKit page for the latest news and updates. You will receive emails about these updates as they are posted, to the email associated with your Backerkit account. To make sure that emails from your project creator don't get caught in your spam filter, add [email protected] and [email protected] to your address book. Avoid marking BackerKit emails as spam. Check your spam filters/archived emails. Subject lines to look for: Response Needed -- Get your reward for Project Name or Reminder -- Response needed to deliver your reward for Project Name
I noticed that orders have been marked as fulfilled, but I haven't received mine. Where is my order?
After the initial fulfillment, we provide a 60-day window for you to actively track and receive your purchase. It is essential for customers to stay updated by regularly checking their emails and notifications regarding order fulfillment. Once this 60-day period has passed, we cannot guarantee the fulfillment of your order. To make sure that emails from your project creator don't get caught in your spam filter, add [email protected] and [email protected] to your address book.
I noticed damages on my order. How do I report this?
We provide a 60-day window from the receipt of your order to report any product damages. It is essential for customers to inspect every aspect of their purchases promptly upon arrival and report any issues within this timeframe. After the 60-day period has passed, we cannot guarantee the resolution of any damage claims. To report damages, please email us at [email protected] with your full name and backer #, campaign title, and photos of the damages.
I used my Apple ID and did not receive my survey. What can I do?
Backers who have pledged to the campaign using their AppleID but haven't completely set up their Apple Pay account (linking their email address to their Apple Wallet) will have issues receiving their emails from BackerKit. Those backers have a @privaterelay.appleid.com email address and will need to reach out to BackerKit Support to update their email address in BackerKit. You'll be able to reach out to BackerKit Support by clicking the "need help" link from the Lost Survey page: https://www.backerkit.com/are_you_a_backer. When you write in to Support, please provide your name and your BackerKit pledge number, which can be found in your BackerKit pledge confirmation email. Please email us at [email protected] with your full name and backer #, and campaign title with any questions.
This campaign is taking too long for fulfillment and I would like a refund. What is your refund policy?
Due to the nature of this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign, we are unable to offer refunds. All of the items described within this campaign are extremely limited in nature and expensive to produce. As such, once your reserved order amount is collected, we will be unable to process a refund. BOOM! Studios does everything within its power to ensure timely shipping and comply with originally estimated fulfillment dates, although those can and frequently do change based on a variety of real-world factors (including manufacturing and shipping delays) beyond the company’s control. BOOM! Studios also endeavors to provide timely updates regarding any delays, should we encounter them, through campaign updates. Additionally, BackerKit cannot process payments or refunds once your credit card has expired.
What happens to my reserved order if I don't fill out my post-campaign survey, provide a shipping address, and/or do not pay for my shipping costs and/or sales tax (if applicable) in BackerKit?
As noted in prior FAQ questions, we will post campaign updates on (at least) a monthly basis in advance, during, and after sending out surveys and charging credit cards for add-ons, shipping, and sales tax (if applicable), with the deadlines to complete these steps. After we have completed the primary wave of fulfillment, you will have an additional three months to finalize and claim your reserved order. During that three month period, our customer service team will email any customers with outstanding orders directly once per month. If after this three month period, you still have not completed the necessary steps for us to fulfill your order, we cannot guarantee we will be able to fulfill your order and you will not be entitled to a refund.
I’m a comic shop owner, independent bookstore owner, or other retailer. Can I get the BOOM! Direct Reserve editions for my store?
Yes! Any retail partner who wishes to carry these BOOM! Direct Reserve products in their store can contact us directly about purchasing these items at wholesale. Please contact us directly at [email protected] to inquire about wholesale pricing options.
This project looks great and is already funded! Does that mean the writer, artist, colorist, letterer, and rest of the creative team will be seeing page rate increases or proper profit participation for their contributions to the project?
Like the rest of the BackerKit community, BOOM! Studios cares deeply about fair compensation for creative talent. As such, all of the creators hired by BOOM! Studios, who have material featured in this campaign are eligible for industry-standard royalties based on sales of their work, including those made through this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign. This is in addition to the rates they were paid when the work was first commissioned. In other words, the creative talent will benefit directly from your support of this campaign.
How do the items offered through this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign differ from what will be available in comic shops, bookstores, and online elsewhere?
While DUNE: HOUSE ATREIDES, DUNE: HOUSE HARKONNEN, DUNE: HOUSE CORRINO, & DUNE: TALES FROM ARRAKEEN will be made available through comic shops, bookstores, and myriad locations where books are commonly discovered, the exclusive cover artwork along with any upgrades and embellishments unlocked through Stretch Goals will only be available exclusively through this BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign, limited to their initial print run, and never-to-be reprinted again.
Why aren’t there any less expensive reserve options in this campaign?
The focus of any BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign is twofold – (1) introducing fans of some of the most beloved franchises in the world to the limitless medium of comic storytelling while providing a complete, satisfying reading experience and (2) giving those fans an opportunity to secure some of our most premium, most limited editions for their collections. To accomplish the first goal, we’ve endeavored to offer one or more economical entry-level options and to accomplish the second, we’ve dreamed up ultra-limited, ambitious sets intended to add delight to a fan’s collection.
What if I want to reserve two different tiers?
If you are interested in reserving a limited level, we recommend reserving that limited level as it may sell out during the campaign. You will be able to add any unlimited items as Add-Ons, either during the campaign or through BackerKit after the campaign. If you are interested in ordering more than one limited level, we will make any unsold quantities available through BackerKit as Add-Ons after the campaign ends. If you wish to ensure you can reserve two different limited levels during the campaign period, you will need to create a second BackerKit account and place two separate reserved orders. Please note, for anyone that chooses to pledge to the campaign under separate accounts, we cannot guarantee that shipping will be combined for their orders.
Will shipping be combined for multiple items in an order?
Yes, where possible our fulfillment partner will combine reserved items to reduce shipping costs. BOOM! Studios and our fulfillment partners reserve the right to send multiple shipments to reduce the likelihood of any rare or limited-edition items being damaged in transit.
Can I over pledge ahead of time to set aside funds for Add-On item(s) during the survey period?
Yes! You can always over pledge on BackerKit. When we conduct the survey through BackerKit, those funds will be available to you in your account and can be applied to Add-On items.
The tier I wanted to reserve is no longer available. What can I do?
Unfortunately, we are unable to open tiers that have sold out. While many of the tiers are unlimited in quantity, the more exclusive tiers are limited in nature in part to ensure their collectibility. We may decide to unlock new limited edition tiers during the course of the campaign, or other customers may change their mind and adjust their orders, so if there is a sold out tier you have your eye on, you’ll want to check back on the campaign page frequently.
I’m interested in one of the limited edition tiers that feature signed products. Do you provide a Certificate of Authenticity?
Yes! Any signed books will include an official BOOM! Studios bookplate that includes text verifying the authenticity of the signature(s).
Can any of the signatures be personalized?
No, unfortunately we cannot accommodate requests for personalization.
How do I know if I qualified for the Early Bird Bonus reward?
Declare your allegiance to the Imperium at launch! Reserve any tier within the first 48 hours of this BOOM! DIRECT RESERVE campaign (August 27th at 11am PT to August 29th at 11am PT), and you’ll automatically receive digital copies of the first issue of DUNE: HOUSE ATREIDES, DUNE: HOUSE HARKONNEN, and DUNE: HOUSE CORRINO as an Early Bird Bonus!
How can I confirm whether my reserved order qualified for any individual stretch goals?
Stretch goal rewards will be automatically added to your reserved order in our pledge manager, BackerKit, when the campaign ends. Afterwards, you can add onto your order if there are items you are missing, although we cannot guarantee that all stretch goal items will be available as add-ons.
If I spend additional money to purchase add-ons through my survey, am I still eligible for the bonus rewards from the stretch goals?
Part of the reward for participating in the campaign period is that you receive the stretch goal rewards based on that participation during the campaign. Qualifying orders are calculated ahead of surveys going out, so that customers can see everything they will receive as they finalize their order. Additions to your order after the campaign has closed will not contribute to qualifications for stretch goal rewards.
