What Is This?

So many literary magazines begin every day and almost all of them exist purely and completely as a website. While this offers a flexible, low cost way to get a magazine off the ground, to get literature in front of people's eyes, their tragedy is that many of these disappear within 3 to 5 years of their founding. And what happens to all those stories and essays and columns published by that magazine?

Well, unless someone thought to archive them online, they're simply gone.

Gone like they were never there.

As algorithms have taken over so much of our lives and the digital detritus piles up on our phones and hard drives, we found a deep appreciation for physical objects. The tactile feel of a book or a magazine, running your fingers over pages, over unique art you can't find anywhere else. The words physically in your hand or filling your bookcase.

This was the driving motivation behind Broken River Zines!

We want to send you a beautiful object full of stories and essays that you will want to return to again and again.

Why Zines?

Issue 0

For bookfairs and conventions around the country, we also began giving away a Sampler Zine to give people a sense of who we are and what we write. Over and over again, we've received tremendous feedback about this zine. People love being able to have a short zine on the go to try out new authors.

The success of what we're now calling Issue 0 led us to taking a crack at a monthly zine sent to subscribers. We're also giving away the digital version of the zine right here and now!

Download Issue 0 here!

Who We Are

Broken River Books began as a small independent press in 2012. Over that time it published over 60 titles of weird fiction, including such authors as Stephen Graham Jones, William Boyle, and many others. Over the past five years, the press evolved into a writer's collective: six authors with complete control over their work, collaborating to benefit the group. A win for one of us is a win for us all.

Broken River Books is the award winning writers' collective from Rios de la Luz, J David Osborne, David Simmons, Kelby Losack, Grant Wamack, and e rathke with artwork by Tony Tran.

It's difficult to pin down exactly what genre our work falls into. It can range from cyberpunk to folk horror to rural noir, sometimes all within the same book. We've got zombie dogs resurrected with energy drinks, Baltimore drug dealers in mech suits, and post-apocalyptic vampire hunting. We've got houses that come to life and give birth to new rooms. We've got scarecrows defending their land from murderous cat people.

We write what we feel like writing, and we all help each other with editing and developing our books. When it's time to put the book out into the world, we attend book fairs and popups all across the country, from LA to Minneapolis to Florida to OKC.

Shipping Costs

Shipping will be charged after the Pledge Manager opens. Because we'll be making 12 separate deliveries over the year, shipping costs will cover that price upfront.

Shipping costs are something we're going to be taking a close look at during the campaign and it will depend somewhat on the distribution of backers from around the world. For US backers, this will be relatively straightforward. If we hit our stretch goal, we'll also be able to offer free shipping for the zine subscription.

For the rest of the world, we're planning on printing as close to domestically as possible. We're able to print these in the UK, Canada, the EU, and Australia. This will dramatically reduce shipping costs of the zines.

However, shipping book bundles from the US will add significant costs, depending on where you want these delivered.

With that in mind, we'll be keeping an eye on shipping costs and will update people during the campaign.

If you back both of our campaigns, you'll receive a beautiful bookmark from each of us with your pledges! They follow the Tarot theme of the Broken River Zines and the science fiction theme of Between Stars & Shadows
