In this spiritual successor and response to "The Wasteland", GULA explores the apocalyptic wasteland of capitalism, greed and environmental collapse in a searing epic poem.
Join me in crowdfunding a beautiful perfect-bound edition of brand-new epic poem GULA! GULA will be a slim paperback volume chock-full of verse, telling the story of Carrion City, the shadowy mirrorworld to our own where those who are forgotten, dismissed or deliberately discarded go.
What exactly do you mean by 'epic poem'?
GULA is what I would call an atypical epic poem. While it doesn't follow a single character or identifiable people, it does have a large scope and a clear arc -- it's closer to, say, T.S. Eliot's 'The Wasteland' or Baldwin's 'Staggerlee wonders' than it is The Aeneid. While the final line and page count is pending the formatting being completed, the current count is 30 or so pages, and just over 5,000 words.
Why a paperback?
With queer, political and transgressive art more under threat than ever, physical editions of indie art are more important than ever. That's why I'm so eager to make this a paperback -- but I need your help! This campaign is a way for me to fund the production of this book and get it into the hands of excited readers, all without having to worry about the digital marketplace deciding to remove copies from our libraries. Once you have the book, you HAVE it. Nobody can take it from you without a fight.
You may already be reading this and thinking that art is all well and good, but on a material level, people are suffering. What good does it do to write about it? First of all, I believe that writers have an important role as historians, as holders of emotion, and as communicators to those who may know one part of a tale but not all of it. But secondly, every pledge below has a proportion of it dedicated to UNRWA; 20%, rounded to the nearest dollar amount. That isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but not only does it mean that every pledge is contributing a proportional amount, it's a number with meaning behind it. Under Jewish law, tzedakah ( צְדָקָה ) or charity is the practice of giving at least 10 percent of our income to charitable causes. This way, with every pledge, 10% is coming from me, and 10% is coming from you. 20 in Hebrew (kaph, or כ) is also the number and word for redemption, freedom from suffering, or an upturned palm. So it's appropriate in many ways!

In 2022, a lot of things happened in my neck of the woods. First of all was, of course, the "Freedom Convoy", a bunch of people in trucks that set up in my neck of the woods (quite literally on my doorstep, actually). I lost my job as a result -- and my mental health, always something I've struggled with, started spiralling. Over the next year, my girlfriend and I went through separate periods of housing instability -- for the first time in my life, I was genuinely homeless, couch-surfing, and trying to secure housing with no success. I managed it through the kindness of a near-stranger (who has now become family) but the experience, as anybody else who's been homeless or housing-insecure knows, changes you. Out of that experience was born the first Carrion City; an art-zine about famine, hunger, poverty, and cannibalism.
But the idea of Carrion City stuck with me. The zine was good -- the zine was excellent! But the zine wasn't enough. (Funnily enough I'm not the only one who's had the phrase Carrion City stick in my head -- it's also the name of a Cassandra Khaw series.) So I kept writing, and with wildfire smoke in the air, I produced The Singularity. And still, the poem that was intended to be the finale of The Singularity...kept growing. So I published The Singularity, and I returned to reading.
Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson are the poets of many childhoods -- but I also have a strong attachment to T.S. Eliot and Walt Whitman, who aren't often given to eager, verse-hungry six year olds, ...A thousand others, too, who have constructed the literary landscape we live in without us even being aware of it. We know the name Robert Frost, but perhaps not that of Emma Lazarus, even if she is responsible for the words of Lady Liberty -- and Phyllis Wheatley and Voltairine de Cleyre have never been schoolroom names. So, too, do our songwriters occupy a place within this canon -- a canon not for the novelist or the essayist, but the crafter of single lines or couplets that resonate in the mind for years, even decades. Sometimes an entire verse will rest inside your heart until the appropriate mind. Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and Leonard Cohen are classic examples who few people would deny, but too easily the words of Lewis Allan (given voice by Billie Holliday in Strange Fruit) or Gil Scott-Heron aren't given the same importance -- nor are more modern voices, like Ada Rook. And of course, no modern thoughts about poetry and its power could possibly be complete without a bow of the head to the dearly departed Refaat Alareer and the poem heard around the world.
It was that -- the death and collective mourning of Professor Alareer -- that finally drew GULA into focus. It wasn't and isn't enough to dwell on the cruelty of poverty on my own back door, or my own experiences even if expanded to include others like me. I've written plenty of poetry about my own sorrow and grief; but GULA is about more than that. GULA is about fury just as much as sadness, and love as much as hatred -- and its reach spans all the way from Carthage to Palestine. Nobody is free until we are all free -- and when even one of us is in chains, that weight still pulls us down.

Before anything else, please note: I am located in Canada and as such, physical shipping is affected by the volatile tariff situation. All shipping fees are collected after the campaign, closer to when items are actually shipped out. That being said, these estimates should give you an idea for what to expect, depending on your country.
Fulfillment is scheduled to happen at the end of January/beginning of February in order to let the holiday rush settle and the Canada Post strike come to a conclusion.
Lettermail is only available for within Canada. If you'd like to get a tracked package for a single paperback, let me know, but the increased shipping charge will apply.
All shipping estimates, both for charge and time, are estimates only; especially for international shipping. IEEPA in particular is liable to change.
All shipping fees will be charged closer to the date of shipment and not at the time of pledging.
REFUNDS:
Items damaged or lost during shipping are not eligible for refunds. If your book or print has come out misprinted, muddy, etc. I can replace them or refund the price of the items, but shipping fees remain non-refundable.
