[Back now to unlock the second stretch goal of MORE short stories!] Tom Vargas goes to the beach in the latest installment of this post-apocalyptic high urban fantasy pulp detective series! Action! Magic! Surfing!
Return to the world of the Fermi Resolution! [Fantasy, post-apocalyptic]
It's a future post-apocalyptic (but not grimdark) America full of magic, madness, war, adventure, and -- when it comes to the Tom Vargas Mysteries series -- jokes about movies. So many jokes about movies. Banshee Beach is the third book in the series: check out the Add-ons section for print and digital copies of the first two books (Frozen Dreams and Tinsel Rain).
Tom Vargas is back! And he's surfing New-C-A.
Tom is the guy with the hat, wise-cracking hero of my post-apocalyptic high urban fantasy pulp detective series. As the above picture suggests, he lives in an... interesting place, full of glitter and mystery. Tom is a Shamus who Clears Cases in Cin City (more formally Cinderella, tinsel crown of the magical Kingdom of New California.) Shamuses may look like detectives, straight out of the Lore, but it's a lot more complicated than that.
This is what the cover is going to look like.
But, in the end, it's largely just an excuse to make a lot of wisecracks about movies.
As described elsewhere, the central conceit of the Fermi Resolution is that in 2100 AD, somebody very smart will discover the laws of magic. Shortly thereafter, somebody very stupid will work out a way to put spellcasting on an app, and download it into everybody's phones. Shortly after that, civilization collapses.
Everything you need to know about this setting can be found in this picture.
It turns out that the discovery of magic is the Great Sort for planetary civilizations, and we did not avoid the usual fate.
Surprisingly, things are not universally grimdark, although in Tom Vargas's time period (mid-26th Century AD) things aren't all that great. His own country of New California is safe enough, but Sonora to the east and Deseret to the north are both recovering from wars of conquest and pillage. And in the center of the continent perches the horrible Universal Dominion, always hungry for more mages to kidnap and convert.
But that's all right. They don't have mages in New California. Just ask anyone. Honestly, the Tom Vargas setting is mostly an opportunity for me to make jokes about movies, pop culture, and general wisecracking. Tom is a Shamus, whose holy calling is to Clear Cases, whether people want him to, or not. Mostly it's 'not,' as per the tradition -- and, more importantly, the Lore. Oh, and this isn't the last story I'm going to write about Tom, but this also isn't an epic trilogy or anything like that. Tom is just having adventures. The world isn't about to end.
I mean, technically it's already ended, or it's going to end again in another few centuries. The term 'post-apocalyptic' has more give in it than you'd expect.
All of my pay tier Patrons on Patreon get a discount on the Ripper pledge level (higher levels are not affected, but get the relevant awards anyway).
Returning backers will get a PDF advance copy of the Fermi Resolution Worldbook Companion. This consists of all the tabletop RPG material for that setting that I've done since publishing the Fermi Resolution Worldbook. If you don't play roleplaying games, it still has tons of lore and worldbuilding (and spoilers)!
Anyone who makes a pre-launch reservation will get a free collection of poetry written in the Fermi Resolution universe! Filks! Heroic verse! Actual rhyme and meter! [Now closed.]
Any backer who followed the Backerkit before launch (or backs in the first 48 hours, at the Ripper level or above [Now closed]) will get an E-ARC (Electronic Advanced Reader's Copy) of my upcoming Fermi Resolution novel Lunatic's Hope. That book is at the editor's, even as we speak.
It is a little more... *eldritch* than the other Fermi Resolution novels.
I am mostly focusing on getting Banshee Beach out as early as possible, and I don't want to overpromise. That means the stretch goals as currently planned are going to be, ah, efficient.
A snapshot of the stretch goal determination process.
[Funded!] $1,500: a Fermi Resolution short story sampler! Three collated stories from the Fermi Resolution (including the Tom Vargas story given out to followers), available in PDF and EPUB form, will be made available to anyone who pledged at the Ripper level or above.
$2,000: the short story sampler expands! To four stories.
$2,500: the cover artist and editor get paid more! My editor and cover artist are good folks, and I'd like to pay them a bit more. If we hit this level, I will.
$3,000: a tip to the original VA for the Frozen Dreams audiobook! Back in the day, I did an audiobook for Frozen Dreams. (we're working on the one for Tinsel Rain, but that's a different project entirely). Alas, neither my voice actor nor I really understood how crowdfunding affected payouts for that, to the detriment of her royalties. If we hit this level, I'm gonna make it up to her.
$3,500: the short story sampler expands! To five stories.
$4,000: the short story sampler expands! To six stories.
Tom Vargas is part of a larger universe. If you're unfamiliar with it, we can get you up to speed real quick. Note that all physical rewards are US shipping only.
She's actually very nice.
Novels and short story collections. Right now, there's Frozen Dreams and Tinsel Rain (the first two books of the Tom Vargas Mysteries series); Morgan Barod (Conanesque sword-and-sorcery in the wilds of New Jersey); and Tales From the Fermi Resolution Volumes 1 and 2 (anthologies spanning the entire future history of the Fermi Resolution). Signed paperback copies!
Ghosts on an Alien Wind will also be available in paperback. That book is creepy cosmic horror science fiction, and is different from pretty much everything else that you'll find here. Get yours today! Bearing in mind that when I wrote this, 'today' was technically 'in a couple of months.'
The Roleplaying Game. The Fermi Resolution Worldbook is a combination tabletop Roleplaying Game (using the GUMSHOE investigative ruleset) and a reference guide for the Fermi Resolution universe. Signed paperback copies, maybe digital if I figure out how to do that.
Book art posters. Not strictly needed for lore-like purposes, but I like the art. Printed copies, suitable for framing!
Because self-publishing costs money. I paid for a real cover artist, and I will be paying for a real cover layout artist and a real editor. All of those folks need to eat. If I want to get this book out before the end of 2027, I'm going to need a little help getting over the finish line.
Not in the book. But it is part of the world.
And that's where crowdfunding comes in. Supporting me now gets the books out more quickly. Which obviously benefits everybody, from my new and ongoing readers, to Western Civilization itself. The world needs more good books.
All digital rewards will be distributed by email, either directly from Backerkit or via DriveThruRPG. Right now the plan is to fulfill them directly from Backerkit. Digital awards will be shipped as they come available.
All printed rewards will be mailed to the backers after the campaign ends via Media Mail. At this time, we are only offering physical shipping for addresses in the United States of America. Shipping will be calculated after the campaign on a per-item, tiered basis.
Print-on-demand codes for the Fermi Resolution Worldbook add-on may be available for fulfilment through DriveThruRPG; I will know by the beginning of the campaign itself.
I am also working on doing signed bookplates as an additional add-on for foreign backers, as they can be mailed out cheaply.
I anticipate that Banshee Beach itself will be ready in 2027, as early as I can arrange. Obviously, the better we do, the earlier the release date, but this project is largely paying for editing and maps. Both of those tasks take time to fulfill.
