FujoCoded LLC: Software and education for a better web
For the past four years, weâve been working within the transformative fandom community to understand the barriers to fans building communal spaces for themselves on the web. This experience has informed a series of projects to chart a path towards a more empowered future, where online subcultures collaborate among themselves and with each other to take more control of their experience on the web.
Last year, we took a bold step towards this future by fundraising for The Fujoshi Guide to Web Development. With the success of that Kickstarter, and the guideâs production well underway, itâs time for our next steps: establishing a sustainable way forward by formalizing our ongoing work under a real company with an official mission, hiring skilled contractors from our community, and opening our company storeâjust some of the many impactful milestones we have planned for this campaign.
Introducing FujoCoded LLC
FujoCoded LLC is the culmination of the work weâve been doing for the past four years. It collects various projects weâve launched and more that weâre planning under the same banner. These projects, as well as the companyâs mission, are focused on three pillars:
- Education, which gives people the skills to be the change they want to see on the web.
- Software, which gives people the tools to make such changes.
-
Community, which gives people the strength, structure, and support to see those changes through.
To fund our mission, weâre currently producing the first book in our Fujoshi Guide to Web Development series, as well as developing software to meet a need within the existing web ecosystem (that people are open to paying for). However, to ensure long-term success, we must do more than build products to sell: we need to be certain that our legal ducks are in order, and that we can feasibly hire talent within the community.
Update: We're Now 100% Funded!
Thanks to your support, weâve now reached our goal! Letâs keep going to unlock more stretch goals:
One final stretch goal
Our goal for the campain
Our projects take time and effort, but forming an official company, with a store to sell merchandise to help fund those projects, takes resources. Thatâs why it's time to collect your seed⌠money.
To quote Wikipedia, seed money is very early funding meant to support a business until it can generate cash of its own. Your generous seed donation (đ) will allow FujoCoded LLC, to do the following:
- Recoup the cost of LLC formation fees and initial lawyer consultation.
- Pay the annual LLC tax for this year.
- Hire an employment lawyer to draft contracts for two types of contractors: web developers and artists.
-
Contract with a fandom-sourced developer to build our company storefront (with Astro and Shopify), where we can sell the Fujoshi Guide and other merchandise to support our missionâlike the ones you'll get as rewards!
With your help, we can set ourselves up for success by formalizing all we've been working towards, and by establishing our first revenue source as we work to create more. This will allow us to continue working on initiatives like the ones you can read about on our projects page.
Once this first goal is met, we have more exciting goals planned, ranging from new articles to help onboard fans into modern JavaScript development to more money to pay contractors with! Any extra funds we collect will go into keeping FujoCoded LLC sustainable in the long term (and help smooth out our path towardsworld web domination).

A first article extracting some wisdom from the book "Crucial Confrontations", which some of our collaborators have found a transformative read.
After years of working within our community, we repeatedly found that developing effective communication and confrontation skills helps our collaborators thrive. Unfortunately, the world doesn't teach us how to effectively (but kindly) hold each other accountable.
Given this experience, we deeply believe that making some of the wisdom in this book accessible to people (without reading a full book) will allow all of us to collaborate better.

Community Achievements and Stretch Goals
$4000 â Shipper at work [Unlocked]
Our first version of this "shipping" sticker features VSCode and a terminal, but there's more than one type of shipping... here's to the other one!
$5000 â Closing the NPM Loop [Unlocked]
Once we reach $5000, we can take the resources we offer to the next level. Hitting this goal will enable us to:
- Help our community overcome a major obstacle in their web development journey: installing and managing JavaScript libraries using NPM, the Node Package Manager. To do this, we'll contract with a fandom-sourced writer to create our first free article on fujoweb.dev.
- Hire an employment lawyer to draft a contract for this and future article writers.
- Recoup part of the costs from producing merchandise for this campaign.
$6000 â Website Art prints [Unlocked]
Next up, we'll turn the excellent art on our website into prints! These are 8"x10"-sized art prints that will look amazing without breaking the bank.
$7000 â Terminal Help [Unlocked]
Another common issue for beginner developers: how to *start* learning how to handle the Terminal.
This will require research to determine the major roadblocks, which is how our project operates: active learning from those going through it all!

The Team
We're a group of fandom artists, writers, developers, and just all-around cool cats who are passionate about fandom, the web, and the people at the intersection of both. We have experience in a large variety of endeavors: building large-scale software applications, moderation and community building, managing open source projects, decentralized technologies, and technical (and non-technical) writing.
You can find out more about our team and our projects on our website.

Risks and Challenges
For our first goal of building our storefront, we don't expect major risks: we already have all the rewards ready (with the exception of actual production), and a contractor we've worked with previously who is up to the challenge. While we haven't found an employment lawyer well-suited to our purposes, funds to expand our search will help; please get in touch with us if you know a good fit!
The usual production risks of delayed production due to unforeseen circumstances (like natural disasters, etc), do apply. But we will do our best to fulfill all merch options within a timely manner.

For our stretch goals, we don't have a writer contractor in mind, nor have we previously worked with one for technical writing. However, we have experience figuring out how to work with fannish folks, which will ease the process.Â
The goal of this campaign is to get more of our work done without our founder personally overseeing the bulk of it. However, she'll still have to coordinate some of the work, and provide feedback and technical guidance. While this could introduce some delays if things get hectic, we don't foresee significant impacts on the eventual delivery. It is also an opportunity to learn to delegate further.
