Shopify Outage begone 🔌! Fortune cookies back on! 🥠🥠🥠 + Cookie Run begins/free (second) shipping! user avatar
Hello everyone,
Shopify had a hiccup yesterday night, so if you've tried to buy our delicious fandom (fortune) cookies and failed, give it another try! And if you haven't yet...
Greetings, fujoshi, fudanshi, fujin, and friends, This month, we bring you a double-heaping of hiring, conventions, and cookies to make up for the fact that May’s newsletter is late (or is June’s early?)—we’ve got a lot more than Yaoi cookies on our plates, so we’re eager to outsource some of it. Time to put you (and our bake sale funds) to work.
See below for more details!
FujoCoded General Company News
Summer Jobs: It’s hiring season! With Ms Boba’s workload getting more packed than Git's line of suitors, we have decided to wrestle as much as we can away from her and give it to some of you (for a fee)! Along with our classic artist business card drop off, we now have two more: a hiring form for writers, and one for small-gig HTML/CSS (and/or) JS wranglers! Details at the end 👇
The Servers’ Panopticon: And speaking of hiring… Let’s celebrate the great first month-iversary of our new SysAdmin, Kat! After familiarizing herself with NixOS, she’s been going to town on our server configuration and now we can track all our different sites and tools, including when they go down.
How to Save a Feed: As you can see from the red above, the labeling website for our Bluesky fanworks feed project has been down for quite a while. Initially, we broke the laws of DevOps and just manually resurrected it every time the server went down, but we (predictably) forgot to keep doing it after a while. Now that she’s on board, we’ve set Kat to aligning the bones and blood just right to bring it back to life… forever!
Labelers Necromancy: Similarly, Kat brought our other Bluesky account labelers (“Your Fujin Animal” and “Choose your AO3 rating!”) back to the (im)mortal plane—although the Bluesky algorithm is upset at our long absence and won’t show the labels for the latter. If you’ve been unable to get one of our badges, try again! It may not display immediately, but we’re working to appease our social overlords. All hail to Kat, our Necromancer Supreme! See here for more details on all our ATproto projects.
That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles: If you’re waiting for your delicious cookies (and the website trackers aren't doing it for you), they’re baking as we speak! The original order didn’t find enough gluten-free aficionados to meet minimum quantities, but after putting them back on sale briefly we smashed that threshold and got them in the oven! Production has started and soon y’all will have all the tasty treats you can cram in your mouths, whether you’re a gluten glutton or not.
Baking Your Own: We’ve been hard at work on the web-dev learn-along included in our latest digital pack: a “fortune cookie” generator website based on our cookie fortunes (with some never-before-seen ones!) The code comes in beginner and intermediate versions, and it’s chock-full of helpful comments, HTML and CSS features you may be new to, and some neat JavaScript tricks to help you get started! It was free during the fortune cookies campaign, but if you missed it you can now pre-order it for $5 (or read below for a discount 👀)!
FujoCoded Backerkit Update
Recent Progress on Our Backerkit Campaign
NPM on the Way: We’ve hired not one, but two new writers for our NPM series! Arrow and Rie (aka notavodkashot) will tackle the first two introductory articles: just enough to teach us how well our new writing process works, and teach you about NodeJS and the very basics of NPM. Come try them out in our “WebDev Support” thread at CitrusCon (more on that later)!
Will Trade Money for Words: As you might expect, we have a lot to write! And in the newfound spirit of delegation (and to give Ms Boba time to breathe), we’re looking to hire even more new writers! We now have a permanent Writer Business Card drop off box for you to throw your name in the ring. As the person currently writing this newsletter, it’s a good gig! It pays well and Ms Boba only uses the whip with your enthusiastic consent.
A Fujo’s Guide to Style: But we won’t be throwing you into the deep end without some floaties! Our technical writing gig(s) now comes with a whole style guide explaining how, why, and for whom this stuff should be written. A big job that will help our newfound writing team stay true to the Boba flavour you know and love. It isn't public yet, but... maybe soon!
Arg-uing with (the) Terminal: Finally, we're expanding our terminal series to explain two key topics: arguments and parameters. The initial guide was dedicated to all the basics, but we found that a bit more was needed to cover all our *bas(h)*es..So we sat one of our hired monkeys at a new typewriter, and asked Jaffa (currently writing this same newsletter) to create an article outline for a future writer to fill in.
What's Next for the FujoCoded Backerkit
Manifesting our Writing: It’s time to get those NPM articles written and delivered! With two valiant writers finally hired and set up, this should be a smooth process. We’re looking forward to getting these into your hands, so that you can go from fiddling with our fortune cookie generator, to granting your website wishes yourselves (or falling into a labyrinth of frameworks, up to you).
Duty() Calls: Still, two articles does not a series make, and with that in mind: we need you to submit an entry into our writers business card drop off! We’ll soon be looking to hire more writers to keep the NPM goodness flowing, with the next articles focusing on going beyond how to get started with NPM and serve as a reference for concepts that will come in handy as you practice and grow.

In the press
Getting Conned 2: the Reconnening: We’ll be attending CitrusCon again, with Ms Boba giving a talk on how to work together as a community even when everything, well... kinda sucks. At the con you’ll also find a discount code for our store, and a space to come meet us and get help with your web-dev questions. If you’d like to register, it’s free but you gotta do it by June 19th!
Better Late than Never: And speaking of Ms Boba yapping about building collaborative organizations, she’s started publishing the blog version of her talk from last year’s CitrusCon, with “Rebuilding Community on the (Fujo)Web” pt. 1 & “pt. 2 (her favorite). It’s got everything you want in a fic—I mean, talk: interpersonal struggle, power dynamics, and a call for Fujos to Assemble.
Leaving the Nest:We also started transitioning the governance of our Fandom Coders Discord server to Sociocracy, so that it can grow big and strong with the direct support of its members. This’ll help in our effort to make FujoCoded’s own load more sustainable, and means the community will soon have the power to decide how its own spaces should be run. The first meeting of the Transition bubble/team kicked off to a great start, and the second meeting is already scheduled.
Taken for Grant-ed: Ms Boba was awarded a coveted “graze grant” for her ongoing ATproto guestbook project, which you can watch her build on stream. She’s planning to use the grant to finance technical writing specifically around that project, making decentralization through ATproto more legible to technical and non-technical folks alike. Once done, the guestbook will let you start collecting messages from friends and visitors, even on static sites like Neocities!
Ms Boba Streaming Schedule
...and speaking of the guestbook, it’s now officially named Tomo, borrowing from the Japanese for “friend”, and the Italian word for “book”! We’re continuing to stream its ongoing development every Thursday at 3PM Pacific... or we'll be, once CitrusCon is done.
Come along on Twitch and spectate (or heckle) Ms Boba as she wrestles code into place and suplexes syntax errors! In the meantime, you can find all of the progress to date on the dedicated Twitch collection. Hope to see you there!
FujoStore Highlights: Restocks, Sales, and Limited-Time Offers
As we’re right out of our cookie sale, we didn’t have the time to plan any special offer for you this month, but CitrusCon’s special goodie bag will include a discount code for our store. Register here by June 19th!
As part of our push for more moneyful delegation, we’re going to periodically open new opportunities for people to pitch in and get paid! If you’re interested in throwing your yaoi paddle in the ring, fill out the forms below and we’ll be in touch when a good match shows up.
💻 WebDev Gigs incoming! There is a lot going on in the FujoVerse™ and many pages (like the one on FujoGuide Volume 0) could use some TLC from entry-level HTML/CSS-wranglers. We also have a few other challenges at different levels we’ll be looking to take care of as we grow. Join the fight here!
🖼️ Art(ist) Archive! We’ve got some character art needs in the pipeline (don’t we always?), and we’d love to have even more artists on tap for when that gets firmed up—monsterfucking tendencies appreciated but not required. Add your info here!
That’s all, folks!
And with this, our update for May/June (Mune?) concludes. See you next month (and on Twitch) for more adventures together!
Love, The FujoCoded Team (A Confluence of Calamities)
Friends, fujin: production is ready! Our fortunes are chosen, our packaging is selected, and only one foe remains—alas, the most terrible of them all:minimum order quantities.
As we discovered when placing the final order, minimum order for Gluten Free cookies is per flavor. This means we need to sell 5 more packs for each Gluten Free flavor to meet the threshold!
Know someone who hates gluten? Curious about what gluten free flavored fortune cookies taste like (we're told, delicious)? Want to help our founder not meet a terrible fate and have to eat a bunch of unsold cookies herself?
Geese (and fujin) invaded the first ATproto conference, with us leading the charge: through the power of community (and in less than 5 hours) we got work-safe geese yaoi on the screen. Now that is what we call impact!
FujoCoded General Company News
Setting Some ATmosphere: March 22-23 saw us join the ATmosphere conference, the first conference dedicated to the ATproto ecosystem—that is, the decentralized protocol behind apps like BlueSky. It was an incredible gathering of people who really, really care about a freer and more independent web, including many ActivityPub/Mastodon friends, and fujin-friendly, to say the least… (Check out all talks here!)
Friendly Geese: Not only the ATmosphere Conf organizers invited Ms Boba after hearing about her ATproto experiments for fujin, but much affectionate talk was made about everyone’s new OTP: conference mascot Gustopher and The Untitled Goose Game goose. So, in a span of just 5 hours from putting out our call to hearing back joyous honks of love, we got not just one or two, but many submissions of tasteful #goosetopher fanart—we even got them on the closing slides of the conference! Let’s hope Gustopher’s a good influence on his new paramour.
Miss Speaking: Ms Boba gave a fantastic talk at the conference to a great response from attendees and remote watchers! Throughout the conference, there was a lot of audience interest in how we can get more communities involved in the future of the (social) web, which fits perfectly with all we're doing. Check out the full details in the BobaBoard retrospective, or go straight to her talk: “Yearning for the Open Protocols”.
Just remember: there’s a fine line to walk between building up your professional profile, and maintaining sensible internet anonymity, which is why Ms Boba attended in disguise—if you think you now know what she looks like, no you don't!
Bake Sale: In other news, we had a delicious return to April 1st tradition with a treat rather than a tr...large-scale fundraiser—Yaoi fortune cookies! On sale were “Chocolate Doves”, “Kinda Vanilla”, and “Lemony Prompts”, each with its own set of specifically-crafted fortunes...we even got some lovelyfanart! Chocolate Doves flew over the competition to win our cookie run, but really, aren’t we all winners? Check out our contributors spotlight on Bluesky, Mastodon, Tumblr, or Twitter!
Hiring Fun(ds): And of course, selling cookies is not just delicious fun, it gives us enough money for our next goal: hiring a sysadmin to help us better setup our servers so they can be reliable, and will promptly alert us if anything happens! Who knows, this might finally make us confident enough to host stuff for you in the future...
Recent Progress on Our Backerkit Campaign
Writing Frenzy: It’s not all geese and gobbling, we also wrote (and then rewrote ad infinitum) the outline for our soon-to-be-famous NPM article! We might have had it (mostly) ready for the last newsletter, but Ms Boba spent some time rearranging it after a break…and it’s now four whole articles! That might stretch the budget a bit, but it’s also going to cover most of what we’ve learned the community is struggling with...just like our already-available Terminal content!
Village People: Still, it takes a village to code (and learn to code) a website so we gathered a bunch of enthusiastic feedback from the Fandom Coders community. We even had it reviewed by one of BobaBoard’s professional volunteer tech writers to ensure our outline sets our future hire (see below) up for success!
What’s Next for the FujoCoded BackerKit
Extended Contracts: Our contracts are, to quote sociocracy, “good enough for now, safe enough to try”—but they’ll need a bit of extending to cover tech writers, too! And we’ll need this ASAP because…
Needed Prose Masters: …we’re looking to hire a tech writer for the NPM articles with the funds raised through the corresponding stretch goal in our BackerKit campaign! If you’d like this to beyou (or someone you know), check out our call for hire below!

Back to the Bubbles: We’ve published the Bobaboard retrospective! This is a once-a-year look back at everything our Bubbly Bubbles of BobaBoard volunteers (some of us included) have been up to. Whilst BobaBoard became our first graduated project last year (and thus moved out of the FujoCoded nest, it’s still deeply tied to us, and we’re helping each other as need be—especially when it comes to effort that benefits both of us (contracts! Documentation!)
Bubbling to the Future: …and just so you know, the retrospective also includes a section on BobaBoard’s plans for 2025! If you’re curious what we’ll be (also) up to, go check that out!
Ms Boba Streaming Schedule
Current schedule: With a whole lot happening all around, Ms Boba’s streams are (once again) on a best-effort basis! While she’ll try to go live on Twitch every Thursday at 3PM Pacific, the corresponding 3PM Monday slot comes and goes. To get notified when she streams, you can subscribe to her on Twitch, follow her on socials (mastodon, bluesky, twitter, tumblr), or keep up with our programming branch, FujoWebDev (mastodon, bluesky, twitter, tumblr)!
What are we streaming about? We’re currently deep into more ATproto (and lexicons) experimentation with a series of streams dedicated to “building a GuestBook lexicon”! You can catch a recording here:
Part 2: Reacting to Events:where we listen to the global stream of events to react to new Guestbooks and entries being created
We’ll continue this series until we have a fully-working guestbook set up!
FujoStore Highlights: Restocks, Sales, and Limited-Time Offers
Cookie Up a Challenge: We have something in store (literally) for the brave explorers who can find the cookies hidden all over our online parlor: a FREE prize that includes (among other things) a HTML, CSS and JS learn-along—or will, when it ships late May. Technically this is part of our now concluded April 1st event, and we were just too busy to remove it. But who’s complaining? Offer valid until the end of the month…at least!
You can help!
Last but not least, our usual call for hired help and/or willing volunteers! This month we’re once again happy to share a paid position: come forth technical writers (and aspiring such), and let us bring you on a Now Paying Money adventure!
Smithing Words📝…for Money (💰): After much time, feedback, and outlining, the “Introduction to JavaScript with NPM” articles financed through our founding campaign are ready to be written! Now we’re finally looking for technical writers (fannish background appreciated) to help us inspire new, confident explorers of everything the NPM ecosystem has to offer—and yes, we (also) mean Astro.
Check out some of the articles in our learning website for an example of what the final artifacts should look like, and get in touch if you’re up for the (paid) task! We require both basic computer knowledge and the willingness to run simple command line programs, but we don't require previous experience with professional technical writing NOR pre-existing knowledge of NPM/JavaScript. Just send us some tutorials or other explainers you've written!
Smithing Videos📹…for Glory: Are you willing to wrangle video wranglers? BobaBoard’s documentation bubble is looking for a wondrous lead volunteer to coordinate our wonderful video volunteers as they turn our many, many hours of recorded web development and BobaBoard documentation into something the whole FujoVerse™ and beyond can put to good use. If you have previous experience with managing work on video, or have been part of similar work and want to build some managing experience of your own, reach out!
If any of these calls for aid sound up your alley, or if you’d like to get involved in other ways, please reach out at [email protected]!
That’s all, folks!
And with this, our update for April concludes. See you next month (and on Twitch) for more adventures together!
