KVAD is a VIking storytelling RPG where every hero’s fate becomes a poem.

You begin as ordinary folk, breaking free from the constraints of mundane life to embark on legendary journeys that will define your legacy. Through tough choices, dramatic dice rolls, and the Skald’s vivid narration, your hero’s tale will be immortalized in a KVAD - a Norse poem honoring their deeds.

WHAT MAKES KVAD DIFFERENT?
  • Become the Saga Hero - Burn your years like a torch, the brighter you blaze, the shorter you may live, and the greater your legend.
  • The System - Fast, elegant, and a bold blend of drama and risk. Every roll shapes your story.
  • Crafted Like A Real Saga - Built to feel like an ancient  tome, with a modern touch.
As the saying goes, “Better to be a wolf for a day than a sheep for a lifetime.” In KVAD, you are the hero, challenging the ordinary and leaving your mark on the world through bold action. Although, the path is fraught with danger and death is inevitable. The only question is: how will you spend the time you’re given?

Are you ready to shape your legacy?

KVAD uses a dice-pool system made for storytelling. It’s fast, dramatic, and keeps the focus on the choices your hero makes. Every roll tells part of the story.  You always roll three dice - one for who you are, one for what you know, and one for what you rely on.

It’s a simple system, but every choice has weight. Success isn’t certain, and even failure moves the story forward. See Action Mechanics below for how it works in play.

KVAD isn’t a glossy, modern fantasy book - it’s designed to feel like a rediscovered Norse manuscript.
Every page is intentionally minimal, with black-and-white artwork, and passages of text with a clear structure, much like the old sagas themselves.

The book draws direct inspiration from the historic editions illustrated by Erik Werenskiold and Christian Krohg — two of Norway’s most celebrated artists — alongside several contemporary illustrators. Their original woodcut-style illustrations have been respectfully re-used in KVAD, not as nostalgia, but as a tribute - bringing players as close as possible to the atmosphere of the ancient Norse manuscripts, while adding a subtle modern touch.

Printed using high-quality matte paper and traditional serif typography, KVAD feels like a crafted object - something between a game and a relic. When you hold it, you’re not just reading rules. You’re opening a saga. When you open KVAD, it should feel like holding a fragment of history - a game forged in tradition.

Step into the world of Norse sagas and prepare to forge your legacy. In KVAD, you are the Saga Hero, embracing a life of courage, adventure, and epic deeds. When your journey ends, will your name echo through the verses of a timeless poem, or vanish into darkness?

Edit

This is a game designed to be enjoyed with your friends, as you will weave dramatic stories together. You can also play solo as a creative exercise, or even cooperative without a Skald—as the Norns will guide your heroes’ journey.

  • The Players push their Saga Heroes towards eternal glory
  • The Skald sets the scenes, describes the world, the people and its conflicts.
  • The Norns may provide answers to guide the emergent story.
  • Improvised storytelling brings the saga to life. When something is uncertain or dangerous, dice are rolled. The result determines the outcome and path ahead.
  • An actual KVAD becomes the final tribute to the Saga Heroes’ adventures, written by the Players.

If you’d like to dive deeper into terms like Skald or Norns, check out the GLOSSARY here.

Beautifully illustrated by the artist Yuri Perkowski Domingos, the KVAD character sheet captures both artistry and purpose. Here, you fill in your portrayal and features (top left) and pursue your saga, chapter by chapter (bottom left). The right side mirrors your key mechanics, that carry you through the trials ahead. Another way of framing it:

  • Who you are (Top left side)
  • What you want (Bottom left side)
  • How you do it (Right side)

A Saga Hero is your character in KVAD.  They are an ordinary person from the Norse world who is suddenly drawn into dramatic events. Through bold choices and risky action, they seek to achieve something meaningful that will be remembered in a poem — a KVAD — when their story ends.
Every challenge in KVAD is resolved through an action — a moment where a hero strives, risks, or defies fate. Each action is built from three dice, reflecting who your hero is, what they know, and what they rely on:

  • 1 Attribute - How you act (Might, Wits, Grace)
  • 1 Skill - What you know (combat, rowing… anything that defines you)
  • 1 Resource - What you have (gear, allies, even a barrel of mead!)

Each trait corresponds to a die size (d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, or d4). The smaller the die, the more skilled you are — and the greater your chance of success. Roll all three dice together: 1–3 on any die is a success. Ones are explosive, letting you reroll for additional successes. The Skald (or the Norns) sets the difficulty, and you’ll need that many successes or more to overcome the obstacle. Extra successes can be saved for later, but failure always forces a choice:

  • Spend Grit to simply add successes. Low-risk, high cost.
  • Spend Wyrd to shorten your character's lifespan and re-roll unsuccessful dice.
  • Burn a Resource by losing one level of the resource to gain one success.
  • Live with the consequences and lose Health.
The Skald is the narrator. They describe places and people, present Obstacles, and escalate Consequences from the heroes’ choices. Scenes are framed by answering: who is present, where are we, what is happening, then asking “What do you do?” The Skald Sheet captures the campaign’s moving parts:

  • Major characters and factions
  • Notable places and events
  • Obstacles to the heroes’ Legacy
  • Threads that drive future scenes

Improvised storytelling is supported by the Norns. When the table needs an answer or spark, you Ask the Norns with dedicated tables. This also enables solo and GM-less play.

Nordveien (=North Way) is the default setting for KVAD — inspired by Norway during the Viking Age, yet intentionally free from strict historical accuracy. It’s designed to let you experience the spirit of that era without the weight of study; add what you like and let the rest become myth.

In the Core Rulebook, you’ll find a thorough look at Nordveien’s society and regions, written to capture the atmosphere and rhythm of the Viking world. The Nordveien map is beautifully illustrated by the German artist Veronica Wunderer.

KVAD (Norwegian Edition, 2021)

Every project we make is a collaboration between trusted partners we’ve met in person—at fairs such as Essen Spiel—to ensure a shared vision and uncompromising quality.

For the English edition of KVAD, we are finalizing agreements with established manufacturers who specialize in premium board game and RPG components. Together, we’re developing the hardcover books, box set, maps, dice, and miniatures to meet the highest standards of durability and finish.

Our philosophy is simple: authentic storytelling deserves authentic craftsmanship. KVAD is designed to last—each page, map, and piece built to reflect the endurance of the sagas themselves. And, true to that spirit, every word and illustration—both in the Norwegian and English editions—has been created by real humans, just as the old stories were.

We are currently finalizing our fulfillment partnership to ensure smooth and reliable global delivery of KVAD. We are in talks with established partners experienced in tabletop and role-playing games, with fulfillment centers in both Europe and the United States.

KVAD is published by Game Forlag, an independent Norwegian publisher of TTRPGs, board games, and trivia books.

The English edition of KVAD was translated by Christoffer Johannessen (left) — an anglophile, lifelong gamer, and proud literature nerd.   With a Master’s in English focused on Shakespeare, and decades of experience as both player and gamemaster, Christoffer brings the spirit of the sagas into vivid, authentic English prose, while keeping its roots intact.

Thomas Flaaten Fredriksen (right) is the editor, typesetter and proofreader for KVAD and in Game Forlag. He had the same position for Tale: the-roleplaying game, the Norwegian version of KVAD, and all other products released by Game Forlag for that matter. His love for language and keen eye for detail helps the finished product shine.

This campaign, production and manufacturing for it - and some other stuff was done by Hans Olav Ekornrød (middle). He is me and I can't think of something cool to say, except for having designed Tale: the role-playing game and the game Heartstrings.

Illustrations within the book are done by traditional Norwegian artists that are part of our cultural heritage, namely Erik Werenskiold and Christian Krogh.

The Cover Art for the Softcover version and the Boxset illustrations are done by Even Mehl Amundsen.
