So, as you might have guessed, I didn't finish the layout by the end of August. The page-count constraint turned out to be tougher than I anticipated. Since I can’t add more pages to the printed zine (the printing house doesn’t print zines longer than 64 pages), I’m still working on including as much content as possible in the zine without making it look like a boring wall of text. If something doesn't make it into the printed version, I’ll include it in the accompanying digital supplement, so technically nothing will be lost. Still, I want the printed zine to be a “standalone” cool guide with all the crucial knowledge and techniques. The digital supplement is meant to offer additional information. Hence my endless rewrites and layout changes; hence the delay.
Since this is not meant as a series, but rather a single guide, and hopefully a gateway to get into a new fantastic, creative hobby, I’m taking my time here - hope it’s ok with you.
Here’s a sneak peek into the types of problems I’m tackling. Tree-scale is usually all over the place in gaming terrain and dioramas. That kinda makes sense, since depending on their age, trees might be roughly the size of a human, twice as big, or 20 times as big. I really, really want to include a graphic showing the average sizes of different fully-grown trees to give you a sense of how large they can be, but to make it readable, it would probably need to take up almost two full pages of the zine. Here’s a rough preview (without any background or text).
With the added text and a bit of work, this would look awesome in the zine, but I’d be down 2 out of 64 pages just to convey the super-complicated message of “trees are large.” So, yeah - still working on it.
