Hi! And just like that 2025 is done! I hope you all have had a good holiday season.
Playtesting! Over late November and December, I managed to have a couple of playtesting sessions between all the Christmas rush. Overall, I was very happy with how this went, and The Hunters are absolutely terrifying antagonists (although one of my PCs still managed to take one out in an act of mutually assured destruction).
More playtesting will happen through January, and further tweaks will happen based on this, but so far I'm pretty happy with the building tension punctuated by high-octane action and the "oh shit" moment when a Hunter shows up.
Progress I'm finishing up the second draft of the manuscript now, in particular the stretch goal of playing as the Hunters. I'll be starting a rough layout of the whole module soon and getting an idea of how much space I have for art/maps before going into full production on those.
That's it for now, and I'll hopefully have another update for you in late January!
I've said this many times by now, but thank you all so much for your support for HUNTERS. I'm very humbled to be making something so many people are very excited for. Hopefully the email spam has calmed down now that Mothership Month is done!
Mothership Month was a wild ride as a first time creator, especially after I found my way into becoming part of the moderator team for Over/Under. As anyone who played it will agree, it was fun, a massive time sink, and constantly surprising.
Just a quick update this time
Stretch Goals HUNTERS hit all of its stretch goals, including unlocking The Castle of the Green Man as a free. printed pamphlet adventure for all physical backers. I'll update you more on it and the other stretch goals in the months to come.
Payment Cards have been charged by BackerKit, and if yours is one of the few that has failed, it may be due to your bank's security processes and payments being made in AUD.
Pedge Manager The pledge manager will be opening sometime soon, but I'm waiting on things to happen on BackerKit's and TKG's end. I'll let you know when it is open.
Project Progress Currently I'm refining my manuscript, adding detailed room and item descriptions and working on rough drafts of the location maps. I will be starting playtesting this coming week.
I will try to post an update every month, even if there's not much new art or anything exciting to show off.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment or send me a message : )
Hi! With around 4 days left of the campaign, just a small update for all my awesome backers and followers!
Reddit Deep-Dive
A couple of days ago I did a Reddit deep-dive. In it I go into a bit more detail about some of the mechanics of the death-game, and how the adventure is structured. Give it a read and ask me any questions there if you're interested!
Shipping Estimates
I now have shipping estimates from Tuesday Knight Games! TKG is handling the shipping for most MM25 projects, making much shipping more affordable for those who will be backing multiple projects. Please check out the HUNTERS campaign page for more information.
Concept Sketches
Here is a little peek behind the curtain of how I develop the art for HUNTERS. Because I'm both the writer and the illustrator, there is a circular relationship between the text and the images: I try to draw what I've written in the text, discover issues with it or cool new ideas, and that in turn is folded back into the text. Or, conversely, I will start with a striking image and work backwards.
concept sketches collage: these are some highlights from my sketchbook
Officer Knight (pictured above) is one of the Target NPCs that players will meet. They are an old and defective security android from back when the dream was a corporate station; and have been thrown into The Hunt because people are sick of them following their outdated programming and "arresting" random citizens.
With the old corporate Station Security and Control being a major location players can explore, Officer Knight is a good example of how I'm trying to weave in hooks, clues and connections between the NPCs, the Hunters, the locations and the wider world of Prospero's Dream.
A couple more things...
We are closing in on the $35,000 stretch goal to make the trifold adventure The Castle of The Green Man a PHYSICAL reward for all physical-tier backers!
Hi! Thanks so much for your support of all kinds for HUNTERS! Now that we've all had a chance to take a breather after the whirlwind of the campaign launch, I wanted to share some new art with you and go into a bit more detail about the stretch goals.
NEW ART
The human Hunters are not the only threats players might find themselves facing in HUNTERS: depending on their choices, they can turn The Hunt into a creature-feature to try and level the playing field. Predator becomes Jurassic Park. Is this a good idea for them to do? We'll see.
The Worm-tailed Accipitrid is one of these creatures, kept in deep freeze in the cryofreezer of the ruined avant-garde restaurant Gastronomer (one of the 3 major locations of HUNTERS). This fearsome social predator is blind and uses its antennae to sense movement in the air, giving it an advantage in the darkness of The Sink (+ other fun mechanics which I don't want to spoil here).
STRETCH GOALS
Printable Warden's tools. I love it when modules just give you a map to print out: if it makes sense at all for a module I'm running, I'll have a player-facing map on the table. This stretch goal unlocks PDF black and white maps for easy and economical printing, as well as PDFs for Warden-facing tracking sheets for Hunter kills/NPC deaths/timelines and other helpful things to make managing so many unique NPCs and threats easier.
Soundtrack. 40 mins of atmospheric original music by tw33ds. He's a super-talented musician and occasional DJ who makes electronic music. I'm asking him to make something spooky, synth-y, atmospheric and a bit subterranean for HUNTERS.
+ 4 pages: play as the Hunters. A significant content-upgrade to the base zine of HUNTERS, adding additional rules, character options and starting scenarios. While the module will still be primarily designed to be run as the players taking on the role of the Hunters' Targets; this stretch goal gives the Warden support if they want to flip the scenario and run an evil campaign (my own game's PCs are currently very morally grey haha), or if PCs are undercover Hunt saboteurs etc. In this mode, the melodrama and backstabbing between the Hunters will play more of a foreground role, as will some of the other twists and threats of the Hunting grounds the players would discover as Targets.
Printable in-universe handouts. Across the module's various loot-tables and location descriptions are in-universe items which the players can find: a tourist-map of the old city, a new-season cybernetics catalogue from Juno Corp, the menu at Gastronomer and other printed materials. This stretch goal unlocks PDF versions of these in-universe items which the Warden can give to their players at the table.
The Castle of The Green Man (PDF pamphlet adventure). The crew discover a strange and seemingly abandoned space station, hidden deep in a remote system. This is the “Castle”, the private home of the enigmatic Hunter, The Green Man. And nobody appears to be home… This is a stand-alone one-shot adventure set in the deep-space equivalent of a weird and luxurious haunted house. It can act as a loosely connected aftermath adventure to HUNTERS, or be an oddity the players discover in any campaign.
+4 pages: More art, more NPCS and hooks. With HUNTERS now sitting at a solid 44 pages, there will be more room for some fun full-page art and more illustrations all round. But another thing that I originally cut for space was including the PCs of my home-campaign as NPC Targets. These characters have deep ties to the Novos, CANYONHEAVY and the Teamsters, but have made enemies of Cutter and the Tempest Company, and will provide more opportunities to tie the events of HUNTERS into the wider factional politics of Prospero's Dream.
Still to come $35,000:Upgrade The Castle of The Green Man to a PHYSICAL printed pamphlet for ALL physical-tier backers!
...And some other fun things I'm thinking of if we reach past the $35,000 mark! Please share/tell your friends about HUNTERS and Mothership Month 2025: word of mouth is extremely important for independent creators, especially first-timers like me!
Thanks again, and I’ll be back with more updates soon. leave a comment and let me know if there are any particular things you'd like me to go into depth about in an update! - Zoe
