💀 Mictlantecuhtli: Lord of the Underworld 🩵 ---> Unlocked!! 🎉
Mictlantecuhtli (muhkt-laan-tuh-koot-lee) is the Aztec God of Death / King of the Mictlán Underworld.
For most Aztec souls, the "journey of the dead" was a difficult, four year trip through the nine levels of Mictlán to reach the ultimate peace of nothingness at its core. The dead faced obstacles such as animals, crashing terrain, harsh winds, and rivers of blood before reaching Mictlantecuhtli where their soul could finally rest.
🍞 Pan de Muerto / Bread of the Dead 💀 (Pintober freebie pin~)---> Unlocked!! 🎉
Pan de Muerto is a sweet bread and a staple treat baked for Aztec rituals and Día de los Muertos. It's baked as an offering for the Ofrendas (altars) of the dead to honor our ancestors and to help nourish their spirits on their journey.
The round shape of the bread symbolizes the cycle of life and death. The center knob on top symbolizes a skull, and dough strips are arranged like bones underneath, making it a wonderful sweet treat for the dead ☠️🖤
➡️ Both the Lord Mictlantecuhtli and the Pan de Muerto Pintober collab pin unlock together!
💀 Mictecacihuatl: Lady of the Dead 🩷 ---> Unlocked!! 🎉
Mictecacihuatl (Meek-teka-see-wahdl) is also known as Lady of the Dead / Wife to Mictlantecuhtli and Queen of the Mictlán Underworld~
Her main role was guarding the bones of the deceased and watching over ancient festivals honoring the dead. These festivals eventually turned into the modern Día de los Muertos celebrations! 😊 She is also the inspiration for the icon "La Catrina," a famous skeletal figure in Mexican culture.
These pins represent the beautiful cycle of life and death in Mexican/Aztec culture ☠️🩵🩷🖤✨ They are the perfect addition for your pin boards and altars~ 🧡🖤
Here's the next two stretch goals to add to this new Aztec God collection 🖤
🐉💫 Quetzalcóatl (ket-sal-KOH-ahtl)
Quetzalcóatl is the feathered serpent and one of the Aztec Creator Gods. During the creation of the Universe, him and his brother Huitzilopochtli (below) created Lady Mictlantecuhtli and Lord Mictecacihuatl to rule the Underworld.
He is the god of wind, learning, arts, crafts and he also brought corn & other valuable agricultural knowledge to humanity. He represents the planet Venus and is known as the Morning Star 🌟 In this form, Quetzalcóatl is called "Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli," or the "Lord of the Star of the Dawn" (referring to Venus)
👉🏼🌈🐉 Personal story:
My mom taught us as kids not to point at rainbows because of Quetzalcóatl! 😄 Legend says that he lives at the bottom of the rainbow and it's considered bad luck to point at a rainbow because he's a sacred entity. Pointing at him is considered very disrespectful which can anger him (my mom said he would bite our fingers if we point at rainbows lol I still don't point at rainbows to this day 😂)
💪🏼💀☀️Huitzilopochtli (weet-see-luh-powch-tuh-lee)
Huitzilopochtli was a Creator God like his brother Quetzalcóatl. He was also the god of War, the Sun. and was considered the primary deity of the Aztec people. He's commonly associated with a Hummingbird because his name contains the Nahuatl word "huitzilin" meaning hummingbird.
In Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli defeats his siblings in an epic cosmic battle which ensured the daily rebirth of the sun. He demanded human sacrifice believing he required blood & hearts to sustain him and ensure that the sun would continue to rise.
He wielded the Xiuhcoatl,a mythological fire serpent, as a powerful weapon. On this pin, a dangling red drop charm will hang off his serpent staff.
After Quetzalcóatl and his brother Huitzilopochtli unlock, we will vote as a community on the next pin stretch goal order below!! Check out the Community tab to vote for the pins you want to see made 💖
📣‼️ Edit: All 4 main XL pins have unlocked and the Poll results are in!!
Here's the winners from the Poll:
Xolotl- Dog-headed god of fire, lightning & death (42%)
Xochiquetzal- Beautiful goddess of love, beauty, fertility & art (30%)
Xipe Totec- Flayed skin god of vegetation, renewal & warfare (13%)
Tezcatlipoca- Feared god of the night sky & sorcery (11%)
Tlaloc- Blue-hued god of rain, storms & fertility (4%)
Here's the stories behind all of our Aztec Deities for reference. I've changed the order to reflect the new stretch goal order~
(**Please note: Pictures below are just visual references for those unfamiliar with the mythology, pin artwork coming soon)
☀️🐺 Xolotl (shuh·luht)
Xolotl was the Aztec Creator God of fire, lightning & death, and he is often shown as a dog-headed deity. He was a guide for souls on their journey through the Underworld. Twin brother to Quetzalcóatl (the Morning Star), the Aztecs believed Xolotl accompanied the sun during its nightly journey through the underworld.
Because of this, he is known as the Evening Star~ 💫 Travelers considered Xolotl their protector & looked to Venus in the sky as a symbol of his guidance 🖤
Pin details: 2.5 inch pin, screen-printing, black nickel finish. This XL pin will come with a sun mini pin, symbolizing his nightly task of guiding the sun through the underworld ☀️🖤

Xochiquetzal is the Aztec Goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and the arts. Her name translates to "precious flower feather" and she is often adorned with flowers and jewelry. She was known for her love affairs/marriage to several gods including Tlaloc (poll option #3) and was later abducted by Tezcatlipoca (poll option #1).
Xipe Totec (SHEE-pay TOE-tek)

Also known as "The Flayed One", Xipe Totec was the Aztec god of vegetation, renewal and warfare. He was often depicted wearing the flayed skin of a sacrificial victim which symbolized the shedding one's skin during the renewal of life, just like snakes do.
His brothers are Quetzalcóatl, Huitzilopochtli, and Tezcatlipoca~
Tezcatlipoca (tez-kuht-luh-pow-kuh)

Tezcatlipoca is an Aztec Creator god of the night sky, conflict, and sorcery. His name translates to "Smoking Mirror" which refers to the obsidian mirrors he wears for divination. His name also symbolized the smoke from battle and sacrifices.
He is also a brother to Quetzalcóatl,Huitzilopochtli and Xipe Totec. These four brothers are also known as the "Four Tezcatlipocas."
Tlaloc (TLAH-lohk)

Tlaloc is the Aztec god of rain, storms, and fertility. His name translates to “He Who Makes Things Sprout.” He was a powerful deity who was vital to Aztec agriculture and was worshipped both in festivals and through sacrifices.
Since he was the Aztec god of rain, he ruled over Tlalocan:an Underworld paradise for those who died from water-related incidents like drowning or lightning strikes.
➡️ If we get close to unlocking all these stretch goal pins, I will open up another poll for Community ideas!!
➡️ New backer suggestion!
Coyolxauhqui- Goddess of the Moon (Sister to Huitzilopochtli~)
In the Aztec myth, Coyolxauhqui the moon goddess was the leader of her 400 siblings who conspired to kill their mother: the goddess Coatlicue. Her unborn brother, Huitzilopochtli, emerged from Coatlicue's womb fully armed and instantly defeated his siblings. He beheaded Coyolxauhqui and threw her head into the sky where it became the moon. The rest of her dismembered body was scattered as stars.
(I will try to make locked designs available to unlock during the surveys!)
