Project Update: Welcome to the party!

Nice to see you here!

This update is going up before we have even launched, so I wanted to share a bunch of goodies! The scope of this project was initially a lot larger. It was originally going to be for 25 plush designs - 5 small plush, 12 giant plush, and 8 giant plush color variations! But times are tough, so most of that got dropped.

I haven't given up on the designs I made though! So since you're already here, would you like to see what I had to cut? I won't share all of them, but some of the more polished stuff sure, why not!

Rocky the Cockatrice

My personal favorite, and a plush probably only I and like 6 other people would ever want so he was on the very end :( The only one below him was Enigma the Questing Beast. Rocky here is based more on the red jungle fowl than domestic chicken breeds.

Cross the Kitsune

Cross the Kitsune

A 3 tailed kitsune based on cross foxes! This is a plush that would have been receiving an alternate color scheme as well. Maybe you will see Bandit the Tanukitsune some day!

Splatter the Spinosaurus

This guy would've been BIG. He was a little later down the line since his prototyping would likely be both expensive and difficult. I like his striking color scheme a lot. The applique would have made him pretty expensive though.

Hart the Peryton

A deceptively peaceful looking peryton. One of the few big designs with closed eyes. I tried open eyes many times, but kept coming back to closed. This is one I will probably have to pattern myself, because even after watering down two bends on the foreleg in to one and pulling a whole bunch of other details I don't know how my pattern designers would've handled it. There was a color alternative, Shadow the Black Peryton, that had fawn spots.

Ruby the Gilded Dragoness

I am running low on my much beloved 40 inch Comet the Fire Dragon plush, but I don't want to do another run of them. So I wanted a replacement... enter Ruby (and her black and white color alt. Opal) with her cartoonish gold done in applique and solid color blocks!

Finch the Deinonychus

I really want to have a big, adorable raptor plush. The smaller size range for Deinonychus was something I might actually be able to simulate with a plush, while still making something bigger than the diminutive (but adorable) Velociraptor. Deinonychus has also been my fav since I was a kid, so I'm a bit biased.

Other giant sized plush, none of my sketches for these are in a state to share but maybe the names will give you an idea:

  • Flicker the Phoenix
  • Enigma the Questing Beast
  • Taro the Non-Binary Tiger Dragon
  • Opal the Monochrome Gilded Dragoness
  • Bandit the Tanukitsune
  • Queen the Bee Dragoness
  • Monarch the Butterly Dragoness
  • Shadow the Black Peryton
  • Smoke the Extinguished Phoenix

Perfect Size Cuddle Plush - Friend Shapes

I planned to be developing as many different plush for future projects as I could alongside the campaign, but now I don't know when I can get to them. These plush are sized specifically to lay across the average human torso length. They would have been weighted, and the bellies would have a pocket for inserting a hot water bottle, warmed bag of rice, low heating pad, etc. I still really want to make plush like these. There would have been one to match Ruby and some other giants on the docket, like Raven being matched to Finch. I really liked making regional gryphons though. Maybe a thylacine cassowary next?

Raven, microraptor

Revamped Wundyboi the Clown Possum

Chunkles the spotted hyena was also revamped, along with me adding a few other clown animals to the group, but Wundyboi here is the only one I finished. I would love to make Wundyboi some day. Maybe in actual opossum size? He might fit in with the cuddle plush above too!

I will not be adding any of these as stretch goals to this campaign unless we double our 5th plush's goal, so if that front page doesn't read $140,000, don't expect to see these any time soon... but someday when I'm able I'd like to bring them all to life.

Our earliest 2026 project - Deadweights

I wanted to challenge myself to design something I normally would never make an attempt at, and Deadweights happened. Weighted, wiggly, huggable plush which play macabre subject matter rather straight while still keeping them cute. I did my best to try and stick to ideas that didn't seem to be making fun of anything. Cordyceps, salmon runs, and roadkill are all death events in nature we are largely familiar with for example, and characters like Roger, the calves, and Switchblade are homages to a concept or individual animals: Cher Ami, Gemini, and Schrödinger's cat. The teaser page is already up btw!

After a terrible April and a May spent grinding myself to dust on work, June is when I can finally...

...not relax at all! Anthrocon will be in a month, so I'm going to have to remain head down in deep, deep con-prep surfacing only to take care of things here on Backerkit, like making sure you are all up to date. But you know what that means right? WE'RE GOING TO BE AT ANTHROCON!! You will be able to come see the Udon, Garth, and Skye prototypes in person before the campaign ends if you're so inclined! We'll have a limited number of our giant gryphon and Valentino the Grey Werewolf plushies too!

Lairbrew's Future

It is hard to think that far ahead when the world is as scary as it is right now. But having projects to work on helps me massively, so I have too many ideas.. attached is a poll, maybe let me know what else you might like?
