We’ve started the year strong with all things Legacy of Kain, as have Crystal Dynamics with those announcements last week! From our end, more testing has been completed on Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan which has proven to be really successful, more art has come in from the talented artists involved in the project, and we are close to having a final book file for the TTRPG now!
Progress is steady on Legacy of Kain: The Book of Nosgoth too, with writing continuing to roll in and new artwork being submitted too. Working closely with Crystal Dynamics on this project is such a fantastic opportunity, and all of us at Lost In Cult are enjoying developing these products for such a celebrated and interesting franchise.
Matt McCloskey, Legacy of Kain Franchise General Manager, has also been enjoying the process and shares a bit more about the writing for Legacy of Kain: The Book of Nosgoth: ”It's been exciting to dig into the lore of Legacy of Kain through the encyclopedia and it has generated excellent discussion within the team. We've used this as an opportunity to fine tune and reconcile some of the ideas/stories/concepts that have featured in our games. It has been a huge undertaking and we are grateful for the opportunity to have the time and space to do it justice. We are working hard alongside Lost In Cult to bring you the best encyclopedia and TTRPG possible, and are thankful to the fans for your support and patience.”
We are excited to share that we have received production dummies for some of the elements, including the Collectors’ Edition presentation box, the Scourge of the Sarfan box, the books, and the GM screen. These provide us with an opportunity to review materials and test out configurations. Here are some shots of those below*.
*Please note that these aren’t representative of the final product and subject to change.
The next few months will involve more prototyping, some additional testing, and both writing and artwork submissions. We will endeavour to keep you updated as we get ever closer to getting this into your hands.
We know there have been requests for the pre-order store to go live, and we will ensure this happens in good time ahead of shipping.
We are delighted to share that our recent playtests were a success! Members of the Lost In Cult team gathered around a table, tankards in hand, to embark on a new Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan campaign. Over the course of 3 hours, we explored the various mechanics, utilising them to create our characters, determine our weapons and equipment, and establish our personality traits and backstory.
Our DM for the session, Dan, set the scene using our brand new sample adventure, The Orphans of Everswolde, which has been developed as a jumping in point for those looking for something more structured before developing their own experiences using the inspiration provided. Here’s what Dan had to say about the session:
“I remember absolutely loving my first experience of playing the Curse of Strahd and I’ve been eager for another Vampiric campaign to really sink my teeth into as a DM! (no pun intended). The Scourge Of The Sarafan was a joy to play, explore, and develop. Studying the book in preparation for the play-test only deepened our appreciation for the remarkable care and craft Leo Hunt poured into this TTRPG.”
Our Art Director, Steve, also joined in with the playtest, and was just as excited to get involved, until he rolled his character, that is: “I ended up with an angular body and pox-marked face so wasn’t so lucky there — no romancing the vampires for me I suspect.”
“Since I’ve been art directing the book, I’m familiar with the tale told in the sample adventure so knew the bones of it as we played. I enjoyed seeing the other players discover what was going on in the story. It was also great to see everyone get into character and decide actions based on their background (our librarian annotated our map and we selected our most diminutive party member to descend into the well first to test how strong the rope was). We ended our session excited to play more and journey off into the world to get into more scrapes. I can’t wait for all of you to have the opportunity to play through this world and see the wonderful images within the pages of the book. It's a real treat and we’ve loved crafting it for you.”
This will be our last update before the year is out, but rest assured we will have more to share in the new year. We’d like to thank you all for your support and enthusiasm for this project. Your passion for this franchise is infectious, and we are thoroughly enjoying the opportunities to work within such a rich world on both Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan and Legacy of Kain: The Book of Nosgoth.
I’d also like to thank the team at The Arcanist’s Tavern in Shoreditch, London for hosting us. The atmosphere was suitably set for a fantastic session and I’ve no doubt we will be visiting again in the near future as we continue testing and fine-tuning the playing experience!
Have a wonderful end to 2025 and here’s to a Nosgoth New Year in 2026!
We are very pleased to be able to share that we now have a final written draft of Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan, and we are going to be conducting full game testing in person in December!
It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Leo Hunt, our award winning game designer, and the Crystal Dynamics team to develop a playground for creative expression within the world of Nosgoth. The talented group of artists we have assembled are all bringing the game to life with stunning illustrations inspired by this legendary IP.
For Legacy of Kain: The Book of Nosgoth, we are continuing to make steady progress. On the production side of things, we have been testing materials to fine tune the look and feel of the package, and for the internals of the book, we have also been curating imagery to complement the text! We are excited to share more with you in due course!
By the time we update you next, we will be able to share more about the results of our testing and will have more art to share with you too!
Many of you have been asking about the opportunity to make late pledges and this is something we are going to be opening within the next month or so. Keep an eye out for that when the time comes.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. We know how important the Legacy of Kain franchise is to fans and we are taking the time to ensure we do right by everyone associated with it.
It’s been a busy couple of months working on the Book of Nosgoth and Scourge of the Sarafan TTRPG and we are excited to share some developments with you.
To kick things off, we’d like to celebrate our Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan writer, Leo Hunt, who won gold last month at the ENNIE Awards for his previous work on The Shrike. The ENNIE Awards are a prestigious fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop roleplaying gaming, and Leo is a very worthy winner. We always knew we were in good hands with Leo at the helm, and he has been doing a remarkable job developing Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan.
We’ve made fantastic progress on the TTRPG and have been working closely with Crystal Dynamics and The Ancient’s Den to ensure it stays true to the series whilst also offering room for fans to get creative with the world and its inhabitants. We aim to have a complete first draft of Legacy of Kain: Scourge of the Sarafan in the next few weeks!
“Talking through the lore for the TTRPG has been a great catalyst for the Legacy of Kain franchise team. We’ve been able to clarify how to approach the storied world of Nosgoth, how to support creatives and fans to generate new stories, while honoring and celebrating the existing work. We’re developing that balance and muscle together.” - Matt McCloskey, Legacy of Kain Franchise GM.
Last time around we announced that we are collaborating with The Ancient’s Den. This has been a fantastic partnership — their love of the franchise and their attention to detail has been incredible. It’s been such a joy to work alongside them, and it became clearer as time went by that it would be a missed opportunity not to involve them more heavily in Legacy of Kain: The Book of Nosgoth. Having spent years documenting and detailing everything Legacy of Kain, who better to write about it all in the official encyclopedia? The Ancient’s Den are now the primary writers on the encyclopedia, working very closely with Crystal Dynamics, Lost In Cult and Cook and Becker to produce a comprehensive and accurate account of Nosgoth!
"It’s a deep honour for us to help write the story of this timeless franchise and etch these Arcane Tomes in stone. As deeply engaged fans and keepers of the Nosgoth flame, we are thrilled for the opportunity to memorialise what has gone before, and to provide the bedrock for the series moving forward.” - The Ancient’s Den.
Our focus throughout this process has been to do right by Legacy of Kain and the people who hold it dear. As the very first official encyclopedia and tabletop role-playing game, there are many nuances to consider. We are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to really dig into the lore, and the chance to work alongside the team at Crystal Dynamics to explore what’s possible has been magnificent.
To ensure we do it justice, we are going to need a bit of extra time and, as such, we are targeting Q2 2026 for shipping, rather than the aforementioned Q1 2026. Whilst we know that this will be disappointing news, we know that what we are developing is such a collective celebration of Legacy of Kain and this slight additional time will allow us to fully realise our ambitions for this project.
Thank you all very much for your continued support and kind words. We are excited to share more with you soon but, in the meantime, enjoy some new spreads complete with stunning artwork from our artists, which we've included throughout this post!
(DISCLAIMER: These spreads may be subject to change between now and the final product releasing.)
We’ve been quietly hard at work over the last few months collaborating with the fine folk at Crystal Dynamics to produce two products worthy of the Legacy of Kain name.
To that end, we are very excited to announce that we have also partnered with members of the LoK wiki community, including Monika Erosova (Raina Audron), Barry “Bazielim” Moon, Dylan Geraghty (Aveum), and a group no stranger to the larger LoK fandom, known as The Ancient’s Den, to help ensure we get everything right!
As unofficial lore keepers and proverbial light-bearers for the world of LoK, the book lining up with some of the known goings-on within Nosgoth are being thoroughly reviewed, confirmed, and put into ink.
The complexity of Legacy of Kain is one of the reasons why it has stayed in the gaming and storytelling zeitgeist, and by putting all of the knowledge and passion from The Ancient’s Den, alongside Lost in Cult’s incredible design work, we know that the Book of Nosgoth will delight and illuminate fans new and old.
Legacy of Kain faithful already know what amazing work Raina Audron, Bazielm and Aevum have done with the LoK Wiki, and we are thrilled to have them on board for our official project.
It’s of the utmost importance that the products remain true to the franchise, and we have an unwavering commitment to achieve that. We are really pleased to be working with such a passionate group, and grateful for the opportunity to do so.
Lost In Cult is officially partnering with The Ancient's Den and members of the LoK Wiki community
Shining a spotlight on the Scourge of the Sarafan TTRPG today, we are delighted to celebrate the work of our writer and game designer, Leo Hunt.
Leo is such a joy to work with and continues to demonstrate why he was such a perfect fit for this game. We are collaborating on the game design to fine-tune the experience, and we are starting work on the artwork to accompany the written content. As you know, we assembled a fantastic team of talented artists, and we are excited to be able to share more in the future.
From the folks working on the project, we have some quotes from both The Ancient’s Den and a member of Crystal Dynamics’ franchise team:
“For over 15 years we at The Ancient's Den have worked tirelessly to preserve and illuminate the dark corners of the undead franchise that is Legacy of Kain: we've archived sources so that they wouldn't be lost, hoarded important information, fostered communities, exposed lost content - we've even helped develop games - and yes, most important of all, we've written an encyclopedia about LoK.
So, when the fine folks at Crystal Dynamics and Lost In Cult reached out and asked if we'd like to do it for real and assist in bringing an official Legacy of Kain encyclopedia to fruition - it was an opportunity we couldn't resist. We hope these pages will inspire a new generation of fans and document the history of this franchise as never before, as well as breathe new life into LoK for a prosperous future.” – The Ancient’s Den
“It is a real treat to work with the Lost in Cult team. They have such a high-quality bar. Combine that with The Ancient's Den's amazing depth of knowledge on the franchise and we’ll get the encyclopedia we’ve dreamed of. The TTRPG is also coming along, and fans are going to have a great time adventuring in Nosgoth.” – Max Zaleski, Franchise Producer at Crystal Dynamics
