You head up the rutted dirt road to Southwick. Coming to the edge of the village, you first spot a wooden sign. Lettered in black, blocky Common is "SOUTH ICK", the W scratched out. Southwick is half village, half drying swamp, a grimy canvas of grey-green crisscrossed with churned, dried mud roads linking log buildings. It is a few dozen dirt-encrusted log shacks. Makeshift rain catchments are atop each building, and water barrels are stored under eaves. Along the river, a water wheel stopped turning. Its wheel hangs in the now-dry riverbed. A fishery has a cluster of brown-garbed people industriously cleaning a few baskets of fish. A hardened, rutted dirt road leads to a squat, two-story building. Hanging from a wooden beam near this is a salmon made of beaten copper, dotted with green corrosion. You...

The pine forest is cool in the late morning. Dew clings to branches, small animals rustle through the bushes. Visible through the trees is a muddy, empty riverbed.
