Poll: You head up the rutted dirt road to Southwick. Coming to the edge of the village, you first spot a wooden sign. Lettered in black, blocky Common is "SOUTH ICK", the W scratched out. Southwick is half village, half drying swamp, a grimy canvas of grey-green crisscrossed with churned, dried mud roads linking log buildings. It is a few dozen dirt-encrusted log shacks. Makeshift rain catchments are atop each building, and water barrels are stored under eaves. Along the river, a water wheel stopped turning. Its wheel hangs in the now-dry riverbed. A fishery has a cluster of brown-garbed people industriously cleaning a few baskets of fish. A hardened, rutted dirt road leads to a squat, two-story building.
