BackerKit FAQ
How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?
Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.
To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.
All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.
Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.
Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.
When will I be charged for my pledge?
Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.
What happens after the campaign is over?
The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.
Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.
Project FAQ
Why Backerkit?
Having used Backerkit as a pledge manager for years, we decided to give their crowdfunding platform a go, and though it's still young, we enjoyed its interface and much of the functionality on offer. We have chosen to keep our digital only campaigns on Backerkit so they are all in one place. This makes it easier to ensure they are managed correctly and closed in as timely a fashion as possible while we work on open physical campaigns on Kickstarter.
What is in this book?
This is a book of magic items inspired by the various cultures of the Silk Road. It includes lore based on the fictional world of Andovan, several interwoven adventure elements, and 150+ magic items. It reveals Sayuri and her crew and expands on the world we've begun to unravel in recent one shot and mini adventure campaigns. This book focusses on a small section of the Alabaster Coast in the land of Skova. However, it hints at many other locations all along the Silk Way. We use the term "inspired by" intentionally. This book is a work of fiction that leans on elements of culture and history for flavor. It is not an attempt to accurately create or represent said elements. If that's the kind of book you're looking for, this project is not for you.
When will I get my stuff?
You will receive your items as and when stated in the tier. At times we feature several books together in a campaign, especially when they are related or augment each other in some. Usually, some of these books will already be published. In such a case you will receive the digital version of published books (and those included in add-ons) 2 - 4 weeks after the campaign ends and funds clear. These files are delivered via Backerkit Pledge Manager, so please keep an eye on your emails to make sure you don't miss the survey. For info on delays, please see the final points in this FAQ.
Where are you based?
Penny Dragon Games is a game design company based in the US. Penny Dragon Games works with Starcane Press, based in the United Kingdom, to help develop and publish their content. Many members of the core team are based in Northern Ireland. We work with writers and artists from all corners of the globe.
How will I be kept updated on the campaign's progress?
As with during the campaign, we will post updates when we hit milestones post campaign. This includes when a work-in-progress has been completed, files have been sent via our pledge manager, or we have encountered a major delay. On longer projects, we do our best to post at least once per month even if we haven't made a lot of progress. That way you know work is still ongoing. IMPORTANT NOTE! We have created dozens of crowdfunding campaigns and cannot answer all questions posted on all campaigns. If you have a pressing or urgent matter please contact us using the email address in our profile. The discussion section on our projects is geared toward keeping people informed of progress. We encourage engagement and feedback from members of the community also as this is important to us. However, we can only dedicate so much time to answering questions, so if a question is already covered by the FAQ, it may be deleted.
What about delays?
Almost all of our campaigns on Backerkit are digital only, meaning you don't have to be concerned about shipping. We endeavour to deliver projects as and when stated in tiers. However, despite our best efforts, even digital files can be delayed. Sometimes something doesn't work out with a freelancer and we're left to pick up the pieces. Sometimes a project started out small but grows beyond its original scope. Sometimes we must deal with unforeseen circumstances like illness, death, or other personal matters. Creating a TTRPGs is a creative process and sometimes this can simply take longer than expected. Either way, we do our best to keep backers update as and when there are delays.
What about your outstanding projects?
Penny Dragon Games has always been open about having more than a single project on the go. With rare acception we have used Backerkit Crowdfunding as a platform for digital only campaigns since these are much faster to fulfill and close. Though some remain outstanding, as we polish content to our usual high standard, most digital only campaigns have been fulfilled and closed. Physical campaigns are another matter entirely. Though we continue to slowly make inroads toward closing off physical campaigns, we still have a long way to go. Many of these delays are due to knock-on effects from Covid, global wars, limited material stock, hikes in shipping prices, etc. Despite delays, and in some cases LONG delays, we plan on bringing any outstanding projects to competition. Please do your research on Kickstarter and Backerkit before deciding whether backing a Penny Dragon Games project is for you. In order to focus on bringing our oldest open campaigns up to date, Penny Dragon Games plans to keep new crowdfunding campaigns minimal for the foreseeable future following Sayuri's Chest of Wonders. Initially, many of our future projects were pushed out until later in the year, but they have since been shelved entirely until we have made more meaningful progress on open campaigns. However, please bear in mind that such plans can change.
