Lair of the Storm Giant: A location module for Dungeons & Dragons 5E and Pathfinder 1E and 2E
The villagers living at the foot of the mountain have long told tales of a mysterious storm giant who lives as a recluse on the mountaintop. No one has ever met her or so much as glimpsed her. But they are certain that she spends all of her time pursuing arcane knowledge and pondering the mysteries of Existence, and that she is a being of great power. And they've heard that she wants to hire someone to clean out her basement.
Welcome to Lair of the Storm Giant, the 14th in our ongoing series of location modules/mini-adventures compatible with D&D 5E (Lair of the Storm Giant) and both editions of Pathfinder (Path to the Storm Giant's Lair). In it, the storm giant Sophia, who lives atop a mountain in splendid isolation and pursues endless study of tomes of obscure knowledge, hires a party of adventurers to do simple chores for her. But the basement of her house is anything but simple. It consists of a half-dozen giant-sized rooms in three levels carved down into the mountain, and the player characters find something rather more interesting than vermin and clouds of dust in each of them. A being as grand and powerful as a storm giant can't have mere rats and bugs infesting her storage area, after all. So instead, a host of true oddities meet them, including animated objects, at least one ooze, a mimic and a rotting flesh golem that Sophia once received as a gift, then promptly placed into storage and forgot.
As a reward for cleaning out her entire basement, Sophia will give the party a tome full of obscure knowledge that, if properly used, grants each of them at least one permanent attribute or skill buff. First, however, they discover when they reach the bottom level of the basement that Sophia shares the mountain with a red dragon living in a cavern just beneath it. The dragon, smart enough to be curious about its neighbor but also sly enough to investigate her without direct confrontation, has hired a bunch of duergar to burrow up into the basement. It intends to take sole possession of the mountain by any means necessary, storm giant or no. The player characters won't be able to finish their job for Sophia without dealing with this unexpected hazard and whether they choose negotiation or extermination is up to them.
What Character Levels Work With This Module?
Lair of the Storm Giant and Path to the Storm Giant's Lair are not limited by player character level. Where appropriate, they provide guidance on how to scale encounters to fit the party's average level. Not every encounter needs it because not every encounter is bound to involve combat — for instance, the player characters would have to try very, very hard in order to provoke Sophia and her stone giant servant to violence, so even if they're only 1st Level it shouldn't matter that they're encountering giants.
About Ramen Sandwich Press
If you're not familiar with our Places by the Way and Found by the Way location modules, you can find out more about them on the Ramen Sandwich Press website. As has been my custom lately, I finished writing the manuscript of Lair of the Storm Giant before launching this campaign, so it is already in layout. While the campaign is running, I'll work on converting it to Pathfinder with the intention of having Path to the Storm Giant's Lair ready for layout by the time it ends.
If you want to catch up with either Places by the Way or Found by the Way (or both series at once), the higher reward tiers allow you to pick up complete sets at a bit of a discount to our retail price (in the case of the print copies, you get free domestic shipping). If you want to target your purchases more precisely, we'll open a post-campaign pledge manager in which you can select individual titles from our entire catalogue, with perhaps a few extras thrown in.
