A super-sized special collectors edition of Crawl! fanzine, no.1, the original zine for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Many editions exists but not like this one.
We're making some really special editions of Crawl! fanzine no.1.
Mega-Edition Standard Cover
Crawl!, if you aren't familiar, is the original zine compatible with DCC RPG. It was first published in 2012, and it has been evergreen in the classic and simple, copy-shop printed, stapled and folded zine. But instead, this version will be in a super-sized format and printed on higher-quality paper — the Mega-Edition!
Actual Scale difference: Classic Edition vs Mega-Edition
The Mega-Edition will be comic-book sized (10.24" x 6.69") and will fit in standard comic book bags with boards. This new version will contain (almost) the same content as the current editions, e.g., PWYW digital PDF version (pretentiously and officially called the "Æther Edition", still available now) and the new "Classic Edition" (the standard edition). It will still feature Van Den Danderclanden as depicted by its creator, Brett Miller.
The paper will have uncoated 100 lb. covers and 80 lb. pages. The cover will be printed in full-color, but maintain the monochrome aesthetic. Uncoated paper will retain the soft touch and feel of regular paper, it won't feel much different than the regular zine, just a lot nicer and heavier.
Exclusive to this campaign will be an alternative cover by Doug Kovacs!
Crawl! isn't the first fanzine, but it's the first compatible with DCC RPG!
It was a dream for me to publish something for an RPG that I liked. And I was lucky, as it was a strange time for table-top RPGs. WotC's 4th edition was the first big schism for D&D and independent publishing was the greatest thing to come from it. During this time, lot of people discovered self-publishing, blogging, and cheap office resources made printing things easy. There were a lot of blogs and zines being made, traded, and sold, and most of it was all compatible is some way thanks to "Open Gaming". I also had a really good gaming group, that were made up of creative bike punks, artists, and gamer friends, and they were willing to try some "random D&D-game" still in BETA. They were all very influential in the direction of the zine. The community around this game in general was also inspiring. And it still is to this day. It's hard to explain how easy it was to create these zines surrounded by inspiring and creative people.
Crawl! no.1 is just the first of these zines. So it's a good time to jump in, catch up, and join the Band. Here are some blurbs and verbiage from the early releases.
Crawl! fanzine, no.1:
The first issue of Crawl!, the ORIGINAL ZINE for DCC RPG, features:
The first ever new 3rd party Patron!
Simple tips & tricks for running Sword & Sorcery campaigns!
Converting Old-School Spells!
New skill systems!
And a few other new rules to mix things up!
The ultimate edition of Crawl! no.1 includes the 2013 "Special Edition" layout by Matt Hildebrand, the complete spells and spellburn of Van Den Danderclanden (which were previously found in Crawl! no.3 and as free digital downloads) and several updates and fixes that were done in 2024.
About Crawl! fanzine
Crawl! fanzine is a zine for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. It's made by fans, for fans, in the classic style of punk-rock zines found in record shops and info-shops.
The zine was formerly available only as a printed, folded & stapled product. Each issue will continue to be locally printed and snail-mailed and available at select FLGSs. That tradition will continue, as that is the zines' main point and charm. Paper is expensive, but nothing beats a physical book in your hands full of useful stuff to make your game awesome at the table.
Each creation, submission, art & what-not, belongs to their respective artists & authors. Credits and contact information will be made available for each contribution. If you would like to include, copy or use a derivative of the work you find in Crawl! please contact the original creator.
Some Generous Reviews!
"...one issue is often enough to weed out the good from the not so good...Crawl! is most certainly in the good column." - Tenkar's Tavern
"Issue #1 starts with a hilarious twist...This is just the sort of gaming quirk that makes collector history." - A forum review on Acaeum.com
"This is the epitome of cool. I love the old-school style 'zines and Dak has done a great job with the first issue." - The Borderlands
"...the usefulness of this material is going to vary depending upon your needs, but all of the content is top quality." - The Earthlight Academy
"Running contrary to the classic zine aesthetic, Crawl! is a well designed little book." - Save vs. Total Party Kill
"Crawl[!] in my opinion is the Maximum Rock and Roll of gaming mags. Pick it up and check it out." - Hex Generation
"I can't stress this enough: if you're playing DCC RPG and not getting Crawl!, you're really missing out." - The Earthlight Academy
"If you play the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, you should check Crawl! out if you have not already." - Iron Tavern
The standard cover features Van Den Danderclanden, a patron illustrated by its creator, Brett Miller. In addition to that cover, Doug Kovacs has agreed to design an alternative cover! This edition will be exclusive to this campaign.
Featuring Van Den Danderclanden as illustrated by its creator Brett Miller. The standard covers will be printed on uncoated 100-lb bond paper in full color, but retain the two-color aesthetic. It will be soft to the touch. You may want to keep those Cheetoh fingers away.
The alternative cover features the work of Doug Kovacs. This cover will be coated with a soft-touch matte finish.
It's also important to keep the classic edition affordable, accessible, and cheap.
If you've purchased Crawl! no.1 within the last 12 years, you already have this. There is nothing new except for a slightly updated cover of the iconic Van Den Danderclanden illustrated by his creator, Brett Miller. We'll talk about him later.
It'll be printed at a local copy shop here in Los Angeles. Simple paper for both the cover and the body. Black ink throughout, color cover paper, regular white paper pages. Usually shipped in an envelope, I'm thinking about skipping even that.
We're trying to keep it simple. You can order extra copies of both covers of the Mega-Editions and copies of the classic zine. In addition to those, you can also have access to the current edition of Crawl! fanzine no.13: DEATHMATCH! (My favorite) AND a new Crawl! Edition of Inferno Road courtesy of Doug Kovacs, Wayne Snyder, and Space Penguin Ink.
Table A: Add-ons:
Crawl! Mega-Edition, no.1: Standard Cover +$15
Crawl! Mega-Edition, no.1: Alternative (Doug Kovacs) Cover +$20
We're still keeping this simple. So I did have one idea for a stretch goal. But it's EXPENSIVE. If we reach the big 10K, it'll be available as an ADD-ON. I'll have to do the math on it.
Stretch Goals
$2,000 is what we need to reach funding.
$5,000 I'll add a protective coating to the standard cover (less worries about Cheeto fingers) that will still preserve the soft touch. (Doug's cover coating is tbd.)
$10,000 the only real stretch goal(?). I am hesitant to announce it. But I think you'll like it. It will cost extra.
Honestly, I'll be plenty happy if we just reach funding. And the better this does, increases the chances of the later issues getting the same treatment.
We'll have to talk about the top tiers, specifically the Collector's and the Mega-Collector tiers. You'll be wondering what those are about. They're first prints:
For the Collectors
These are all First Prints of each major edition.
The "First Issue" is from the very first batch of 2012 editions. Back when they cost only $3, they didn't even have any proper SKUs or labeling. The back cover has changed a few times over the years. There were several printings, all printed, stapled, and folded by hand.
Next is from the first printing of the "limited edition" Special Edition which featured the complete write up of the Patron, Van Den Danderclanden, and a fresh layout by Matt Hildebrand (yes, way before he became the main art-guy for Goodman Games). They're one of the only print batches that had trimmed edges as they were printed by a proper print shop. Later printings were done the classic way.
The last artifact is the rarest of them all. 1 of only 56, truly limited, Black on Black editions of the original 2012 run, all hand made the classic way. 50 copies went out to pre-orders, the rest were saved for fundraising purposes, all excessive proceeds went to good causes.
I'll be going more into the details of each in a future update. And we'll also talk about the organizations I'm donating to.

Fulfillment is expected to be by April 2026. The zine is finished. Final layout of the Mega-Edition is happening now, and is expected to be finished in 2 or 3 weeks (we're waiting on some special things).
Shipping costs will be determined later.
Shipping costs will need to be determined later and will depend on the weight and destination. I don't foresee any problems but international shipping can get weird, and you should be used to this by now. Zines will cost $1-3 to ship if shipped alone. The Mega-Editions will likely cost significantly more (~$8-10 in the US, ~$20-30 internationally) due to protective packaging. Hot.
