I’m sure you know by now, but Murka is a high-fantasy playable parody of the all-too-real, capitalist hellscape known as the United States of America.
What makes Murka different, you (didn’t) ask? I’ll tell you. Furry druids, dragons with guns for faces, food magic, Walmoria, gunchucks, explosives, items that aren’t just cursed, but cursed... You get the picture.
This world is a labor of love that my friends and I have been working on for 10 yearsoh my god, has it really only been five years? Are we in the finale episode of some television show jumping its 13th shark? What the hell is going on?
I hope you have fun with this little nearly 60-page sampler PDF. We picked stuff that we thought was bite-sized and funny, but there’s around 800 more pages of content where this came from.
We'd love to meet you, answer your questions about Murka, and welcome you to our community. Just click here to join us on Discord!
Cheers, thanks for reading this far. See you all real soon. Jaron R. M. Johnson, and the Action Fiction Faction
We just hit 130k! I'll have more details later today for you, but I can confirm that this means we've unlocked a new stretch goal, even though we haven't posted the West Coast Goals yet, lmao. You guys are so FAST and I LOVE IT.
All the hardcover books are getting upgraded at this tier with some really fancy shmancy beautiful spot gloss UV effects. Example below.
Will have a more formal update for y'all this afternoon, thanks for sticking with us! Happy Saturday!
Yours across the plains of Midwesteros,
Jaron R. M. Johnson and the Action Fiction Faction
After a quick trek back up the East Coast to Portaland, we've stepped through the eponymous portal and found ourselves on the West Coast of Murka. It's time for the Murkan equivalent of the Oregon Trail, but hopefully with less dysentary.
We have now unlocked:
130k: Spot Gloss on all hardcover books
Thanks for sticking with us for this wild Murkan road trip. HERE WE GO!
Spot Gloss UV
Really happy about unlocking this because it's SUCH a nice touch. All standard-edition hardcover books will now get spot gloss UV. That means even if you didn't back at the fancy Deluxe tiers (why didn't you? Do you hate me? It's okay, I get it), your books will still be extremely high-quality, unbelievably beautiful, and fun to touch with your grubby little shiny-loving goblin grabbers.
Spot UV is essentially when a section of the book is raised and glossy, giving it a 3D sort of effect.
Next Stretch Goal: Restaurants & Retail One Shot
Y'all seemed very excited about our Hometown Heroes one shot, and we realize what Murka really needs is some more adventures to showcase some of the really awesome new mechanics we're making. While I can't cover the full details of this one shot until we unlock it, I can confirm that it will showcase one of our new alternative combat mechanics that we're currently polishing, and I think you're gonna LOVE it.
Welcome to the kitchen. Please don't mind the heat. We're cooking in here.
I woke up like thisss~ ("like this" meaning "a walking disaster unprepared for the incredible generosity of our supporters who have pushed us past 100k wtf")
My fellow Murkans,
I cannot believe we hit 100k just three days in. To be completely transparent, this is now officially the largest campaign we have ever done in terms of money raised. And it's only day three. I cannot thank you all enough.
We have now unlocked:
95k: Minis Series 3
100k: Foundry VTT Conversion
Before I jump in, I just wanted to shout out our awesome Discord community who have been so supportive. It feels like every few minutes I take a scroll through those chats and see really kind words. So, Dewey, PrinceofBelAir, Stryker, Lythar, Kimber, Dave, Beelze, Zelan, and the entire Pretzel Cult - thank you all. You all rock. Your support is appreciated by everyone at Action Fiction, and on a personal note, you fill my life with a lot of joy.
For those not in the Discord, there's no better place to chat with other folks who have the same sense of humor, who love to homebrew their own Murka items, and who support the hell out of one another. 10/10 community, even if I'm a little biased.
Minis Series 3
Here, have another Sir Valence WIP, courtesy of Hermz:
When I told Hermz we would be doing 3 series of minis (my current goal is like 10-15 minis total at this point), he had the following to say:
"LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
And I gotta say, I agree with him entirely. lmao. I'm working up a list of all the creatures and critters who might become a mini so that you all can vote. There are a few that I 100% know will become a mini and so they won't be included in the poll (like the Walrog), so if you don't see those monsters in the poll, don't worry! They'll still be in the list of minis. The poll will be exclusively for y'all to pick and choose your faaaavorites.
And now, the moment I know MANY of you have been waiting for...
Foundry VTT Conversion
It feels like I barely even had time to announce that this had been revealed before we've already unlocked it. I suppose that goes for all of our stretch goals, but this one was a big one for me. I've wanted to see a VTT implementation for Murka for a LONG time, and I'm so damn excited that we're finally gonna make it happen. I've reached out to a VTT creator to see what it's gonna take to get it made, but the jury is still out on whether we'll be working with a VTT creator, or if we'll be making it ourselves (see: I will be making it myself, lol).
If you happen to know someone with VTT/Foundry creation experience, send them our way! You can hit us up on the Discord or email us at [email protected] about it. We love working with folks that like our stuff, it's a great way for us to support our supporters.
Next Stretch Goal: Minis Series 4 & Dice Tray
Our next two stretch goals are the fourth mini series and a dice tray. We've done dice trays before, and if we unlock this, I think you guys are gonna LOVE what we have in store for it!
Also, just to clarify: we have more stretch goals cooking. We, uhh... we thought we had more time, haha. So, once we blow through these next two, our Murkan road trip will not be over. We'll be making a detour so we can continue our journey together!
Thanks again, to each and every one of you. I know you're reading this and going "ah, sure, he's thanking everyone else" but no, I mean you specifically. You the person that clicked this update and are currently reading these words. Thank YOU for your support.
To celebrate all the stretch goals we've been hitting lately, today I bring you Adventure Capitalism, a 1st level spell from the magic school of economancy. Don't just believe in your friends—invest in them!
Economancy is a school of magic unique to the world of Murka. The rising and falling of the magical market is beyond the understanding of the uninitiated, but to an economancer, it’s allegedly comprehensible. Economancers leverage the beauty of the buck, the effusive aspects of supply and demand, and the invisible strings which barely hold capitalism together, all to weave a system of magic so complex, many wizards—economancers included—argue whether or not it can be predicted with any accuracy, or whether it exists at all.
I am a big fan of the simplistic resource-driven nature of the spell, being a single invested re-roll resource that may or may not get spent. It also has some great roleplay potential, and would allow you to eek out an Aristocratic lifestyle with ease—something almost all economancers are wont to do, when they aren't out there adventuring.
With the school of economancy, we really wanted to play with a new kind of resource management, and create a school of magic that's all about exchanges. In addition to Adventure Capitalism, you'll find plenty of fun spells like Conjure Cash Cow and Shrinkflation.
And, of course, it wouldn't be a new school of magic if there weren't a wizard subclass specific to the school. But if you want that, you'll have to grab the books. Or I might come back and post the subclass just because I'm really excited about it, lmao. WHO KNOWS.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy Adventure Capitalism and the Magic School of Economancy.
Let us know what you think in the comments! As a reminder, this content is a work-in-progress, and we're looking for your feedback and playtesting. If you see any glaring issues, don't be shy about pointing them out!
Also, don't forget to let us know which subclasses, spells, items, or monsters you'd like to see us showcase! We'll be dropping sneak peaks from across all three books as the campaign continues.
Cheers, and thanks for reading!
