Project FAQ
Yes, backers are responsible for paying any sales tax or VAT charges associated with their pledge. Many US states require us to collect sales tax, and more international countries require VAT to be paid. The costs of these taxes are not included in tier reward prices, and Dragonsteel is unable to cover these costs. VAT charges include taxes, duties, and fees. These charges will be assessed and collected when completing your pledge survey in addition to paying shipping costs. By charging VAT upfront, we are able to get lower handling fees from FedEx which should reduce the total amount charged while still ensuring a smooth delivery of rewards to international backers.
If you experience payment errors, know that your pledge is not immediately in jeopardy. You’ll receive an email from BackerKit if your payment fails. After fourteen days, if you are unable to correct the payment issue, your pledge will be imported into the pledge manager, where you can reclaim your pledge and correct your payment information. If you need help, please contact BackerKit support. If you still have trouble with your payment, please then reach out to Dragonsteel support for assistance.
Backers will have their cards charged twice. The first charge—for your pledge is to pay for your pledge once the campaign ends. The second payment for shipping, taxes, VAT, etc. will be charged to those who have completed their backer surveys starting April 24th. Please note that for this campaign, we will have a new line item on international backer’s pledges that will include local VAT fees. If you back during the late-pledge phase of the campaign—available until April 13th—you will be charged all at once starting April 24th.
If you are having difficulty paying for your rewards, please see our self-help crowdfunding articles or contact our Dragonsteel support team for assistance. Once your rewards have been paid in full, your rewards will be added to our shipping queue. They cannot be shipped until full payment has been received.
If you prefer split payments, we are happy to accommodate a four month payment plan. When you back a tier above $150, you’ll be given an option to pay over time. By selecting that option, your pledge will be paid in five installments, once each month for the first four months, and a final, fifth payment for shipping fees. Pledges with incomplete payments will not be eligible for a refund of any amount.
Since shipping for add-ons is calculated by weight, we don’t have a specific cost per region. Add-on shipping will be calculated when completing your pledge survey.
After March 27th, we aren’t able to offer refunds for pledge rewards because cards have been charged, and we’re preparing surveys. A crowdfunding campaign is a little different than a store order. A store order purchases an item at our warehouse that we have already manufactured, while crowdfunding helps us fund the production of new items. Please note, that the $5 reservations for the ChasmFriend pin are non-refundable as outlined when the reservation was placed. If you have any questions or concerns about the $5 reservation for the ChasmFriend pin please submit a support ticket, so we can assist you further. Because these projects are crowdfunded, we aren’t able to offer refunds on campaign pledges after surveys go out in April because we use the funds we receive to pay our partners and to manufacture the merchandise for the campaign. This, unfortunately, also means we can’t change pledges after that time either. Once we charge your card, it’s locked in.
Our Windrunner team doesn’t have enough stormlight to be our couriers for this campaign. Instead, we are excited to send domestic packages with USPS and international packages through FedEx.
Backers can choose which of the two cover variants for the premium hardcover of The Fires of December they want to receive via their backer survey. Backer surveys will be sent the first week of April. If you have selected multiple copies through add-ons, the cover choice will be available for each copy in your pledge.
None of the books in this campaign will be signed. Since we will be shipping tier rewards before the end of the year, there is not time for us to alter, personalize, sign, or number any of the books.
Both versions of the premium hardcover of The Fires of December will be similar to our previous Secret Project premium hardcovers, and the versions offered during the Hoid's Storybook Campaign will have exclusive printed edges that the premium hardcovers sold afterward won’t have. The four picture books are hardcovers with a dust jacket with an exclusive, embossed title and gold foiling. The audiobook will be available in two file formats: mp3 and m4b. This campaign will not have an audiobook code option with a third-party distributor. Applicable tiers will receive the four picture books as PDF files and The Fires of December as a traditional EPUB file. We are excited to share these new stories with you! While your books may come in different formats depending on the tier you back, we want to make sure you get them in a timely manner. For digital rewards, please see your pledge survey for access once we begin shipping physical rewards.
The Hoid picture books will be distributed as PDF files, and the ebook for The Fires of December will be an EPUB file. All of these files can be accessed through your backer survey—if you backed an applicable tier—once we begin shipping the physical editions of the book.
Michael Kramer, narrator of the Mistborn series, will read The Fires of December. The audiobook will be distributed in m4b and mp3 files to applicable tiers. We will not be offering Audible codes with this campaign.
Both premium hardcovers of The Fires of December will be similar to our previous Secret Project premium hardcovers. While details for both covers aren’t final, we are looking to give the books: Full-color, patterned endpapers Campaign exclusive printed edges to match the patterned endpapers Two-color chapter headers Full-color artwork throughout, including four full-color inserts
Yes, all copies of The Fires of December sold as part of the Hoid’s Storybook Campaign will have the painted page end treatment. This will not be included with any versions sold through Dragonsteelbooks.com following the campaign.
We have no current information regarding which cover variant will be available post-campaign, nor will we know until after the campaign ends.
We have a few different rewards that are unique to this campaign that we do not plan to put up for sale on our website: The Fires of December Book Box, including printed edges on the premium hardback cover ChasmFriend Plushie Dog & Dragon Plushie Hoid’s Flute The Girl Who Looked Up Figurine

BackerKit FAQ
BackerKit Crowdfunding is an all-or-nothing collaborative funding platform. Creators share their project ideas and set a funding goal with a deadline. Backers pledge money to help make the project possible.
If the project meets its goal by the deadline, pledges are charged and the creator moves forward. If it doesn’t, no one is charged.
Backers often receive special rewards for their support, such as:
- Exclusive products
- Bonus rewards for backing related projects
- Discount pricing
- Behind-the-scenes updates
- Creative input opportunities
Pledging in crowdfunding is a commitment to support the creation of a new product or project. Unlike a traditional purchase, you're not buying an item that already exists. Instead, your contribution helps bring a creative idea to life, and in return, you typically receive rewards (such as the product itself) as a thank you for your early support.
- Select a pledge level with the reward(s) you would like to receive
- Select any add-ons
- Confirm your pledge!
- You are charged only if the campaign meets its funding goal.
- Charges happen when the campaign ends, not when you pledge.
The creator will send you a survey to:
- Ask you for more information about your rewards (selecting options, etc)
- Collect shipping information
- Offer additional items you may want to add to your pledge
- Collect shipping fees (if applicable)
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge. Additional payments are charged when you complete the survey.
Only the project creator and the BackerKit Support Team can see your pledge and contact information. Other backers and the public cannot see your individual pledge amount or personal details.
You can change or adjust your pledge level and add-ons before the campaign ends. After the project concludes, cancellations or changes are at the creator's discretion and may depend on what stage the project is in.
Overtime Mode extends your campaign past its original end time to give backers a final chance to make their pledge. It will add an additional 10 minutes past the end time as long as pledges keep coming in. The campaign will end when there is a 10-minute period without any new pledges.
