Under the weak glow of a broken angst lamp stood four men marked by Kanrath silver badges: a human gentleman in a long coat, a broad orc with his buttons fastened tight, a stocky dwarf with a trimmed beard, and a halfling man holding a ledger close to his chest. They were blood tax officials, arriving on their yearly round. The door opened to a young man, no more than twenty-five. Warm candlelight fell behind him, showing fine clothes and a steady gaze. He knew at once why they had come. The human official spoke calmly, naming the due as if reading from memory. The young man listened, then answered with care. He accepted the tax but claimed his right to divide the payment, half now and half over time, as allowed by Kanrath law, given to the noble citizens of the city. The halfling wrote, the dwarf watched closely, and the orc remained still as stone. After a moment, the human nodded. The terms were accepted. The officials turned back into the night, and the door closed softly behind them, leaving the street quiet once more.
