There’s no simple “You succeeded” or “You failed” outcome. There’s always a choice, an obstacle, or some trouble involved, but also bonuses, unexpected benefits, and lucky turns of events.
Players can influence the story by using different Theme Questions, tailored to playing their chosen Themes. The “Gem” Character can ask, “How am I the center of this event?” or the Guide can ask, “Who approaches me about my teachings?”.
Instead of Skills or Attributes, the Characters have descriptive Traits that the Players can use creatively. The Traits may sound like “Athletic body,” “Thrives during tournaments,” “Knows how to charm,” “Acclaimed style.”
This supplement focuses on different aspects of being a supernatural ruler in the world of Defiant. A day may come when the laws and rules governing AI ensure the fair treatment of artists, journalists, and other creators. A day may come when AI is free from corporate censorship, when all the environmental and economic concerns are at least partially addressed. A day may come when AI can be used as a professional tool, or even a co-creator.
But it is not this day. It’s neither of those days. I mean, they were all supposed to be the same day in this scenario, but now that I think of it, these could be three separate potential dates. I’m not so sure Aragorn’s speech was the right choice here anymore…
Anyway, until that happens (if it ever does), we will not be using generative AI in our games. The text, rules, art, covers - it’s all human-made. Back in 2020, we did claim we were using AI to enhance our art. But please - try to think back to around 2018-2020. There was no MidJourney, no Dall-e. And the “AI” that we used back then was “turn your photo into a sketch” websites. Which, by the way, we eventually stopped using and redid all the art in the final version of the rulebook to not include them. We didn’t even do it because of ethical concerns (again, this was the pre-ethical concerns era) - they just didn’t look good enough in high resolution.
All the art in Defiant is made using the same process. We start with stock photos:
We compose the photos into the scene that we've envisioned. It's a matter of the right proportions, perspective, adding shadows, and blending it all together.
Once the scene is ready, we proceed to post-production and give it the unique Defiant look. We start by adjusting lighting, contrast, and sharpness. Then we add scratches, random brush strokes, and textures. Finally, we color grade the art to match the Defiant palette. And voila! Art is ready to be included in the book!
