My plan is to take the truckload of boxed up DOOM to the Post Office Tuesday and get them shipped off.
Orders that include a Clerk of Courts might go out a little later. I’d like to add at least one more coat of finish to them and give them time to dry thoroughly before shipping.
How do you finish 70+ Gavels of DOOM? One piece at a time.
After making a drying rack, a layer of mineral spirits was rubbed into each handle. Waiting a couple hours, I applied a second coat of mineral spirits. It really brings out the beautiful wood grain.
At this point, most will get a natural linseed oil finish. Some will be coated with a darker brown finish instead.
After finishing over the next couple weeks, the handles and heads will be glued together. Once the glue dries, a coat of paste wax is applied to bring out the true majesty of each Gavel of DOOM.
It’s been a productive morning, though my plan was originally to spend the morning tweaking some issues with the backer survey and store. It was just too nice outside to spend the morning hunkered over the laptop. But don’t worry. The online fixes are coming.
Backer exclusive: pictures of today’s finishing work. Enjoy!
I just picked up this box of awesomeness from Jerry, the local woodturner. He put a lot of care into each one, and it shows. The finishing process begins soon, and will really bring out the beautiful wood grain.
Part of a box of Gavel of DOOM parts.
A follow up survey will provide a choice of light or dark finishes to backers who qualify.
I’m hoping to get caught up on the behind the scenes web work this weekend.
The Gavel of DOOM pre-order store is now open at https://gavel-of-doom.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders/.
The folks at BackerKit are reviewing everything to make sure everything will run smoothly. Once that review is done, we'll be asking for details including gavel color, name for customized stamps, etc.
The gavels are being crafted over the next few weeks. Assembly and finishing may take a month or so, because you are all so awesome and generous. So please be patient, and watch for production and shipping updates.
