Project Update: Workshops, Late Pledges, and Surveys, Oh My!

Hello Marmateers! 

We have been working hard over the last week setting up several post-campaign tasks and events! Let's dive in!

I. Character Creation Workshops

This Friday and Saturday, we are hosting our first character creation workshops in our discord. These two events will run in groups for 30-60 minutes each to build characters together, ask questions, and chat about the different options.

  • Friday's workshop will be open from 4pm - 8pm central
  • Saturday's workshop will be open from 12pm - 4pm central

You can RSVP to the event in our discord server so you don't miss out! 

There will be more events in the future. If you can't make these due to timezones or scheduling, let us know in discord, as we will try to plan events for groups in other timezones too (like for our Australian friends!).

Big Thanks to Ava, our new community manager, for organizing this event!


II. Late Pledges are Open!

Over the last week, we have worked with Backerkit to set up the Pledge Manager and Late Pledges, and today the Preorder and Late Pledge store is open!

Because we are collecting shipping closer to when we begin fulfillment, we currently cannot accept Paypal. However, we will be enabling Paypal in the store later this year after we collect shipping. Apologies for the inconvenience!

III. Surveys Going Out June 2nd

We have final approvals from Backerkit, and will be sending out surveys the week of June 2nd. At that point, you will be able to manage your pledge and send your shipping information to us! So keep an eye out for that.

Please note that we will be collecting shipping separately at a later date. A lot can change in the few months of development, and we want to make sure we get you the most accurate and cheapest shipping rates based on the final weight of the books and packages.

IV. Project Progress 

We are on track and making fantastic progress with the game's writing. We're implementing some clarity tweaks from backer's feedback and getting the stretch goals written!

  • Playable Folk: We have the first draft written for all 10 playable folk! That includes their description, appearance, 3 new abilities, and 5 characters building questions for each.
  • Setting Guide: Allen completed additional towns over the last week, completing 10/13 towns!

While there is still some core writing to do, we're quickly approaching the polishing phase, where there are just numerous small bits of polish and tweaks to be made across the game's text.

V. Lore Tidbit

The Midnight Market
In the depths of the Wildernight, merchants gather under the stars in secret places to sell rare goods, from valuable ingredients to ancient artifacts. The Midnight Market is elusive and secretive, with its location changing each season. Even if you do find the market, it’s rumored that you must learn each merchant's tune and hum it in front of their stall, and only then it will whisper back with its wares for sale. 

VI. A Rad Game Just Launched!

As you know, we're big fans of nostalgia, and wanted to share a game that just oozes with 1980s and 90s nostalgia that we love: Slubglaster: Slime, Warp and Solder, the official expansion for Slugblaster | Kickflip Over a Quantum Centipede! It just launched today!

Project Update: That's a Wrap! And what happens next?

Wow! I'd like to start off with a huge Thank You! to our 720 backers and supporters! The campaign went into Overtime Mode for almost 2 hours as backers streamed in to push us over $50,000, unlocking the last stretch goal to upgrade the book binding and a 60% total raise for each of our contributors!

We could not have done this without each of you, and I am so excited to get the game into everyone's hands! The team has been working on the game and planning the campaign nonstop since November last year, and your love for deliciously magical jam, has exceeded our expectations and dreams! Thank you.

So, What Happens Next?

  • First, we're going to take a short break, celebrate, and recharge our creativity.
  • During that time, we'll set up the pledge manager and preorder store on Backerkit to start collecting your shipping information and let you manage your pledges and add-ons.
  • Over the coming months, we will be developing the rest of the game: Adding the new playable folk, new backgrounds, additional adventures, finishing the setting guide, illustrating ingredients, creatures, and towns, and editing the book's text and rules for clarity. You can expect to hear from us as we release dev logs about that progress!
  • Our current timeline has us going to print this fall, and fulfillment before the holidays. We will release the PDF version to everyone once we have final print approval.
    Could it be sooner than that? Yes, it's possible! But we want the timeline to give our contributors plenty of time to work on their pieces and polish the game. As final dates solidify, we will definitely let you know.

The New Guilds

Two new guilds, which can grant unique abilities to characters, and come with their own lore and agenda in the world, will be added to the game.

The Storycloaks are wandering sages and librarians, collecting stories both big and small, documenting history while putting on entertaining shows to recreate the tales they've heard.  The traveling storytellers wear patchwork cloaks, each patch representing a tale they’ve told, and it becomes a legacy garment, reflecting years of adventures, friendships, and secrets.

The Sage Leafs is the mighty tea guild, filled with members from every aspect of the farm to cup process:  farmers, processors, bundlers, and, of course, tea shop owners! Teas are revered, and many families have their own unique blends to share with visitors.

The Next Stretch Goal: Book Binding Upgrade

Next up, we have a book binding upgrade that would make the Pilcrow Guild proud!

The cover and interior papers will be upgraded to a heavier, thicker paper. This will add heft and longevity to the book. The binding will be upgraded from a glued binding, to a smyth-sewn binding. Sewn bindings, which are commonly used in hardback books. They last longer, are more resilient to use, and let the book lay open easier.

New Sketches!

Galen and I are working together on all the concept sketches for creatures and folk in the bestiary currently, and with a wide array of creatures and folk, it's been a blast imagining both the sinister and sillier creatures!

The Creeping Vine isn't aggressive, but curious... in that it wants to steal all your stuff. WIP. Art by Galen Pejeau.

Lore Tidbit

We've shared many cozy pieces of lore, today let's look at one of the darker ones: 

Gravestone Gardens
Outside many Wildernight villages, there are gardens planted around ancient gravestones from the time before the shattered sun. These gardens bloom only under the light of stardew and are said to be tended by spirits of the graveyard. Villagers often leave offerings in the form of music or poems.
