The Oda reached their peak during the meteoric career of their last great leader, Oda Nobunaga. His spectacular victory over the Imagawa at the Battle of Okehazama in 1561 established the Oda as a force with whom all other warlords had to reckon. When Nobunaga was assassinated in 1582, he lorded over half of Japan; this after inheriting a small domain around Nagoya from his father. He is one of the dominant figures of that era, and if you’ve seen Kurosawa’s classic film Kagemusha, we’ll bet that you remember him as the eccentric warlord who sucked up to European missionaries to get the firearms that sealed the Takeda Clan’s fate. The Takeda claimed descent from a 9th Century Emperor of Japan but they were never so prominent as when Takeda Shingen, who died in 1573, led them. Aided by the samurai still known today as his 24 Generals, Shingen forged his clan's heavy cavalry into the most respected soldiers in Japan. The Uesugi governed Echigo (present-day Niigata Prefecture) for the Shogun but found themselves struggling and disunited as civil war engulfed Japan. Rallying under the legendary Uesugi Kenshin, they held their own against powerful rival clans (mainly the Oda, Takeda and Hojo) who fought them for control of the Kanto Plain. Uesugi Kenshin died in 1578, but he is well remembered in Japan today, with pop star Gackt portraying him on television and in live historical reenactments. The Shimazu controlled Satsuma Province in Kyushu, at the southern tip of Japan. They defeated local rivals (including the larger Otomo) to conquer the rest of the island, and then pushed back against an invasion by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. They were also the first samurai clan to use firearms, benefitting from their strong contacts with European traders and missionaries. The Shimazu survived the Tokugawa Shogunate despite lack of official favor and then played a significant role in government during the Meiji Era. Though stripped of their feudal privileges and titles by modern political reforms, the Shimazu Clan remains a formal organization to this day. The Hojo became the first shoguns of Japan in the 12th Century, but they fell from power and disappeared in the 14th Century. A later samurai clan took their name (and their famous "Three Dragonscales" mon) to give themselves respectability. These later Hojo remained major players in the Kanto region until they surrendered their stronghold of Odawara Castle to Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1590. The Mori traced their origin to the early 13th Century and held fiefs in western and southern Honshu. Under the cunning generalship of Mori Motonari, the clan defeated their local rivals the Amago and the Ouchi and they controlled much of the western half of Japan’s main island by Motonari’s death in 1571. A famous story of the day has him explaining family unity to his sons by showing how three arrows snap easily by themselves, but they are much harder to break when held in a bunch.
