There’s a hush around the table. Dice in hand. Everyone waits to see if the Barbarian’s strike will crush the foe… or miss by a hair. That single heartbeat of anticipation is exactly what we wanted to capture in The One Dice. When we first opened up requests for which classes should make it into The One Dice, the Barbarian was one of the most demanded. And honestly, it was one of the most fun for us to bring to life.

Bringing the Barbarian to life meant iteration. A lot of it.

Our earliest sketches explored very different directions:

Each version tested a different aspect of the class. Did we want to focus on brutality? On survival? On commanding presence? In the end, we leaned toward the roaring pose a design that carried both ferocity and resilience.

That meant iteration. A lot of it. Here are some of the earliest concepts from our design table  raw, loose sketches exploring different poses, stances, and moods. Each version was an experiment: how do we best capture the wrath, strength, and cunning that players love in their Barbarians? Do we show them mid-swing? Calling out in rage? Standing defiant with weapon raised?

From there, we refined the details: the bear pelt draped across the shoulders, the axe gripped with purpose, the ferocity etched into the Barbarian’s face. 

From the start, we wanted these animations to capture everything that makes a Barbarian feel epic at the table not just the raw muscle, but the vigor, the wrath, the fury, the strength. The moments where the room goes quiet, dice in hand, and everyone waits to see whether that raging strike will land.

But Barbarians aren’t just rage machines they’re cunning survivors, unyielding warriors who can shrug off what would fell others. We pushed the animations to hold that duality: the brutality of reckless swings and the commanding power that keeps a party alive.
