Heroes of the Pacific

But, What the hell is Heroes of the Pacific?

Heroes of the Pacific is based on the well-renowned HEROES SYSTEM: TACTICAL SCALE which is recognised with an Origin’s Award (Best Historical Boardgame of the Year – 2015).
Whilst retaining a proper wargame feel with the necessary tactics, the HEROES SYSTEM: TACTICAL SCALE allows you to simulate and fight small-scale military conflicts with ease, aided by the game's speed and dynamics.

This version of the game comes to you from Word Forge Games with the creators: The Devil Pigs.

You will be able to select an English or French version of the game.

Haven't I seen this game before?

Well the Heroes System is a series of games, which started with Heroes of Normandie, but includes a lot of other titles, so may be thats where you recognise it from.

BUT It is possible you saw or were part of the failed Kickstarter from a couple of years ago. It is important to know we are not the company behind that and we did not see any of the money raised in that campaign. BUT we want to make it right. So this Backerkit campaign is for new backers, including many of the Word Forge Games fans and for the people that lost money in the failed Kickstarter.

I'm new what do I pledge for?

That's an easy one: The £100 hero level pledge

I backed the failed KS, what do I pledge for?

We have managed to import the details from Kickstarter, meaning you can see the right pledge to pledge for.
If you have any issues, or have changed your email since pledging on Kickstarter, read the FAQs.

1.     If you pledged at the BANZAI!! level on the KS you can pledge here for £1 + postage. You will then get the Word Forge Games’ Big Box set of Heroes of the Pacific.
2.     If you pledged at the SEMPER FI level on the KS you can pledge here for £16 + postage. You will then get the Word Forge Games’ Big Box set of Heroes of the Pacific.
3.     If you pledged at the GUNG HO level on the KS you can pledge here for £65 + postage. You will then get the Word Forge Games’ Big Box set of Heroes of the Pacific.

Please be aware, we are not taking this product to retail. It is scheduled to fulfil in December 2026, this is an estimate, so timing may change during the processes of manufacture and distribution.

Play a Scenario

This scenario “Gavutu, Shellfish and Crustaceans” takes place on an island close to Guadalcanal and depicts a USMC force that has just landed and must now advance through the jungle.

Each scenario is won by completing one or more objectives, or by preventing your opponent from completing theirs. These objectives vary and can range from controlling a position, to eliminating opposing units, to crossing the battlefield. In the scenario presented here, Gavutu, all inclusive, the Marines must capture a single objective, while the Japanese will do everything to prevent them from doing so.
Set the battlefield as explained in the scenario and start planning your strategy in order to fulfill your objectives.

Set the battlefield as explained in the scenario and start planning your strategy in order to fulfill your objectives.

Your army is built around Recruitment Tiles and their options.
Each scenario tells you which Recruitment Tiles make up your army. These tiles tell you which units you will deploy on the battlefield.

A combat force can contain none, one or more Command Tiles. Some of these command tiles, such as the Japanese HQs Rifle Company (3rd Kure Rikusentai SNLF) in this scenario, provide specific bonuses represented by Doctrine Cards.

These cards give each regiment a specialization and their effects can change from game to game to add replayability. At the start of a scenario, for each HQ Rifle Company, draw one Doctrine Card, from the three available.

Because you’re playing Heroes (!!!) of the Pacific, you may also control Heroes, like Tetsuo Ugaki, with crucial characteristics or weaponry that may well tip the balance of battle to your advantage..
Once you've selected your Recruitment Tiles, add any options the scenario indicates, such as grenades, extra ammo, or even more units. Here, the Japanese has the Ammo option.

Gameplay

Heroes of the Pacific is played over a series of Game Turns.
Each Game Turn is divided into three phases:

At the end of the Supply Phase, check to see if either side has won the scenario, or if you have reached the scenario's time limit. If not, start the next Game Turn.

Depending on how many stars you have in your army (from Recruitment Tiles and the Command Special Ability), you get the same amount of Numbered Order Tokens.

In this example, the Japanese player has 3 stars in their army and thus gets 3 Numbered Order Tokens (from 1 to 3), while the American player has 4 stars and gets 4 Numbered Order Tokens (from 1 to 4.) Both player receive a Bluff Order Token for free.

During the Order Phase, both players assign their Order Tokens (Numbered, Special, or Bluff) to their Units (the majority of them have a number hidden to your opponent).

Only Units that have Order Tokens will be able to move and attack during the Activation Phase (the others will have a chance to act during the Supply Phase, so don't worry). You will activate them one by one depending on the number indicated.

During the Activation Phase, the players take turns activating their Units and taking actions. Normally, only Units marked with a Numbered or Special Order Token (not those with a Bluff Order Token) activate during this phase, but some Action Cards and Special Abilities may allow a Unit to act out of turn.

Every Unit with an Order Token (except the one with a Bluff Order Token) may take a Movement Action - to maneuver into a better position or claim an objective, or engage enemy in Assault. Instead of moving, a unit may take a Firing Action, to eliminate or suppress an opponent’s unit.

During this phase, Units that did not receive an Order Token (not counting Bluff Order Tokens) and do not have an Activated Marker may take a Movement Action. Some Special Abilities or other effects may even allow them to take other actions. Then the players get ready for the next Game Turn by switching the Initiative to the other side.

Heroes of the Pacific would be just a regular tactical wargame if it weren't for the Action cards. These cards will allow you to perform the heroic actions that make the Heroes System so special. All Action cards also provide an alternative bonus that you can use if you don't want, or can't benefit from their effects.

Each scenario tells you how many cards you will have in your hand. Don't hesitate to play them, you will complete your hand of cards every turn!
