Snarf: The Utility Knife Reinvented for Knife Nuts

Most utility knives look like a tool you'd borrow, not a knife you’d be proud to carry. That's why with Snarf, we reinvented the classic utility knife with the knife nut in mind. Freakishly fidgety, fiercely functional, and flat-out fun.

SNARF - verb
: to eat (something) quickly or greedily   ex. "hey this utility knife really snarfed up my cardboard stockpile!"

Most utility knives look like a tool you'd borrow, not a knife you’d be proud to carry. But we're knife nuts, so we started from the ground up, designing the utility knife we always wished existed.
Edit

Titanium is the premium option, an extremely durable material that is lighter weight than steel. Plus the radial milling provides more grip and adds visual interest.

Aluminum is a lightweight, tough material as well, and it takes on anodized colors like nobody's business. Aluminum has a slightly more slick feel as compared to titanium, but the sunburst milling helps add more grip.

G10 is the no-nonsense workhorse option. It's a resilient material that provides excellent grip. Plus if you go with the white G10 you can use RIT to dye the scales pretty much any other color!

We're offering two colors per material, but all models come with blackwashed hardware.
Edit

Utility knives often are strangely proportioned, because the utility blade itself is very small but users want a full-sized knife. So the handle is elongated to compensate. But that creates kind of a derpy looking cutting tool, plus they can often be unweildy. Instead of just elongating the handle, we added a deep finger choil so you get a full-sized knife out of a relatively small cutting edge.

Utility knives can also be very bulky, but we wanted Snarf to be as similar to a modern EDC knife as possible, so we stuck closely to the specs you've come to...ex-spec. (We're allowed one dad joke per campaign🤘😅)
Edit

Snarf is a passion project from a lifelong knife nerd who cares deeply about bringing something new to the knife world, not just making another version of what already exists. That’s why hundreds of hours went into sketching, testing, and reworking every line, curve, and feature until Snarf felt like something truly new.

For the past 30 years, Scikio International in Yangjiang, China has been going gangbusters creating knives for some of the biggest names in the business. You may have never heard of them because they're too focused on making quality knives to take the time to promote themselves. But they do incredible work and we're proud to work with them to bring Snarf to life.

There's a lot going on inside Snarf’s guts, but each piece is precision-built to provide a solid mechanism, smooth action, and easy maintenance when it’s time to clean, service or customize.
Edit

Since we debuted our Roundhouse Lock in 2023, the Roundhouse Lock has become well-known for its crisp detent, smooth action, solid lockup, and safe lock disengagement, and satisfying closing action.

Here's how it went down. In early 2023 Michael met Laura from Scikio at SHOT Show. After mentioning that he was in the process of designing a pivot-based locking system, Laura pulled out a secret prototype of a pivot-based button lock, and Michael was hooked. The opening action was so crisp, the closing was so smooth, and overall it was a fidgeter's dream. Since Laura was looking for partners to use the new lock, it was a no-brainer. We started with higher end knives like Truffles and HiveMind, and now we're bringing the incredible Roundhouse Lock action to a budget-friendly knife.
.We want our knives to be as fun as they are useful, so we incorporated four different opening methods into Snarf. So if you're a knife fidgeter, Snarf's got you covered.

Just because it's fidgety doesn't mean it can't pull its own weight - actually it can support about 400x its weight according to a failure test performed by Calculated Survival!
Edit

Most utility knife designers match the handle shape to that of the blade, so the knife winds up with the profile of stick of butter.  Great on potatoes, but not very ergonomic or visually appealing. That's why we started the design for Snarf swith the handle, focusing on an ergonomic shape that works in multiple grips.

Snarf melts in the hand and is a joy to use, however you slice it. Wait- does that count as a pun? Because I already used up the one we were allowed.

This is one of those great unintended consequences, but it just so happens that in adding a large finger choil to create visual balance and extend the usefulness of the blade, we wound up making the knife itself nicely balanced as well.
Edit

We heavily considered just using a screw to secure the blade as it would theoretically be more secure than a push button system, but after considering the mountains of evidence that knife nuts want a tool-free utility blade swap, our friends at Scikio designed a new slim lock that fits in a space not much thicker than a standard EDC blade. Thus the Jab Lock was born, a tiny nod to it's bigger brother, the Roundhouse Lock.

The driving force behind Snarf was making a utility knife look and function like a modern EDC knife. First and foremost that meant gettting as much use out of the blade as possible.

Michael's dad is a lefty, and he's always said he'll never design a knife his dad can't carry. As a result, Snarf's got the lefty knife nut covered as well! And we don't personally use lanyards, but if you can sneak a lanyard hole in on the backspacer, why not?

Our first two knives (Truffles and HiveMind) were designed with an office setting in mind. Doesn't mean you can't put 'em to work, just not the express purpose behind the design. Snarf on the other hand was designed to be used and abused, perfect for those days when you've got to lock it in and get it done.

But as Jack Torrence taught us, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so Snarf's "hidden" bottle opener and funky style means you're ready to let the good times roll!

Another key element in designing Snarf to look like a modern EDC knife was creating the illusion that the blade grabbler (the part that holds the knife...yes all our names are ridiculous) and the utility blade are one unit. So from a distance it looks just like an ordinary blade. One of the best compliments we've gotten so far was from a YouTube comment where the person wondered what all the fuss was over just another EDC knife...until he spotted that "blade" was actually the blade grabbler and utility blade. Illusion achieved. We say all this to say that we wanted to provide everyone with at 10 black blades to match their Snarf, since black utility blades can be difficult to find out in the wild. You can also pick up a few extra packs if you'd like!

A note here: you'll probably see in various reviews that the =AURORA= logo on the blade is pretty prominent (and a bit askew). We prefer really discreet branding, so the logo will more than likely be tucked up in the corner so when the blade is in the blade grabbler the logo can't be seen.

We also tested out a dozen different utility blades you can find at your local box store, and we found that even though the blades are all visually identical, each company's blade does fit slightly differently. All that we tested were safe and reliable, but some were just a touch more difficult to get in than others, and some had just a tiny bit of rattle. So some experimentation may be necessary here if you'd prefer to use the blades you'd get at a hardware store near you.
Edit
We love interacting with our backers -it's one of the many reasons we've produced our first three knives via preorders. Because with preorders you can actually get to know the folks that will be carrying your knife around rather than just sending it out into the wild. So know that we'll be in touch often regarding the pathway to fulfillment and we're always an email or a phone call away if you ever have any questions or concerns!
Edit

All shipping fees will be charged separately, AFTER the campaign, during pledge management. The prices below are estimates. Actual shipping prices will be determined after production is finished and we're gearing up to send out the knives. Also, if you add-on additional items your order, your shipping cost may increase.

Estimated shipping costs (for a single knife):
  • $7 USA
  • $ 25UK
  • $25 Canada
  • $35 Australia, NZ, Ireland, Norway

How does "Pay Over Time" Work?
If you place an order for $150 or more, you can select the "Pay Over Time" option to have your purchase spread out over 4 monthly payments. Just be aware you will need to wait until your full payment has been made before you are able to fill out the survey which will include your shipping information and any additional add-ons that may become available.

Is it an insult? A compliment? A threat? It's actually a misheard moment between Michael and Melody, where Melody suggested "getsnarf.com" as a potential website, but Michael thought she said "getsnarfed.com." We didn't discover the miscommunication until we had already bought the URL, and we kinda love it. Thanks for visiting and let us know if you've got any questions!
