Project Update: Welcome to The Purgatory Express (The Next Step of our Backer Death Game)
Morning everyone! Nora Again,
With so many incredible ideas for the Backer Death Game, we had absolutely no idea what would win. Me and Iris actually sat down yesterday to figure out what roughly we'd end up doing if any given option won.
Well, now that the vote's done, I'm happy to announce that the winner was the "Train" option. so I've spent the start of my morning getting a quick draft ready so we can move onto the next step of making the sheet together!

The Purgatory Express
The thing that makes Trains interesting and unique as the setting for a Death Game is the tightness of their locations. You can't get to the Cargo Cabin without first moving through the Guest Car and Restaurant! There's very little that can stay hidden, but just as many ways to use this adjacency to your advantage. Locking just one train car could mean splitting everyone in half, and with a little bit of smart use of tracks, you may even be able to manipulate things to create impossible scenarios!
To represent this, we've given The Purgatory Express a special mechanic representing the time it takes to get from one side of the train to the other.
The Next Step: Death Game Questions
In The Prologue Phase of Despair Dilemma, players have the option to answer some "Death Game Questions" at the same time as their usual Prologue Question. These are designed to help make the death game your own and create a few interesting starting plot points.
For the next step of creating our Backer Death Game, we need to fill these in. So if you have any ideas, please comment below with your answer to: What Questions Should We Ask About This Death Game?
You already have a few examples from the Locke Mansion Death Game in the Demo Kit, but here are some other examples that could spark some inspiration:

You already have a few examples from the Locke Mansion Death Game in the Demo Kit, but here are some other examples that could spark some inspiration:
- How are the characters pushed into joining this game? Who’s lying about their reason for joining?
- Some of the students were working on an innovative project before this game started, what was it and what happened to it?
- What necessity is missing from this island, and how does it weigh on the players?
- What blatantly supernatural thing happens to start off this game of life and death?
Try to consider questions that ask for interesting answers and set up plot points that can be used for the rest of the story. It may also be worth keeping in mind the types of tropes you would expect from this kind of setting and Death Game.
Tomorrow, when we have enough answers, we'll set up a poll, and the top four selections will be added to the Death Game Sheet!!
