Project Update: First 36 hours - A Success with Excellent Effect

Hey friends,

Thanks to over 1900 of you, the first 36 hours of the campaign for Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts was a resounding success! This project funded in just 68 minutes!

(And remember: One of the perks of being a backer is instant access to the full, current draft of Deep Cuts. Download links are found in Update #1.)

With over $100k raised, you’ve unlocked some deluxe finishes to the core Deep Cuts book and six additional improvements that provide new trackers, reference sheets, and more to the Red Ledger.

As a reminder, if you pledged at the PDF + POD level or higher, we’re making those same improvements to the PDF ledger we’re including for everyone in that level and above.

We want to take a moment to clarify a couple things that came up after launch.

First, we understand the frustration that our fans in the UK, EU, and other countries feel in regard to our decision to only ship physical rewards inside the U.S. Frankly, it’s a frustrating situation for us as well, but the current volatile state of international trade policy makes it impossible to predict what shipping or taxes will cost when the books are ready six months from now.

However, we’ve decided to try an experiment.

As we approach the public street date for Deep Cuts, we’re going to release a small number of Limited Edition copies of Deep Cuts into distribution abroad. If distributors order the LE version, you should have an opportunity to get one through your FLGS. Likewise, we are adding retailer-priced copies of the LE version to the retailer tier so international retailers (who handle their own importing via a freight forwarder) can get a supply of the LE version themselves.

Note that this puts a lot of the financial and shipping risk on the side of the local shops. They will very likely be forced to pass any extra expense onto the local price of the book.

It’s not an ideal solution but this is the best compromise we can find for our diehard fans who want the Limited Edition cover and don’t want to lean on a friend in the U.S. or explore their own options in using a freight forwarding service.

Second, we made an honest mistake when we assembled the Community Achievement rewards for Scurlock’s Vault. We thought that the Rail Jack and Grifter’s playbook were restricted releases exclusively available to the original backers of Blades in the Dark and we were hoping to bring them to a new audience here. Turns out that’s not the case.

So instead we are including two new rewards in their place:

  • We’ll be issuing all backers a coupon to order a POD version of the Cutter’s Deck on an at-cost basis through DriveThruCards. (This replaces the 1000 Backers achievement.)
  • We’ll be creating a digital wallpaper pack, based on the art in Deep Cuts, which you can use on your desktop or as a Zoom background. (This replaces the 1500 Backer achievement.)

And as of this post, we’re about 80 backers shy of the 2000 mark, where we’ll add Sean Nittner’s Vigilantes to the Vault.

With your help we can get there faster.

Whether you’re a diehard fan of Doskvol or someone new to Blades in the Dark, you can help scribe new entries in the Red Ledger and unlock more stretch goals and Community Achievements by sharing the project on social media and with your friends.

We’re enormously grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve seen in these first 36 hours. Thank you, there’s more to come!
