🐜 WELCOME BACK TO VERMIN 2047

The world of Vermin 2047 is our own, or what it could become if the primal forces of Nature, tired of pollution, degradation, and the proliferation of humankind, suddenly chose to rid themselves of a now-undesirable species.

Unlike other fictional settings of the same kind, Vermin 2047 is not built on a single founding cataclysm but on a chain of events, the collapse, that tipped civilization into chaos and restored full dominion to vegetation, wildlife, and the species able to adapt and survive. At the very least, forces of Nature are awakening in the form of the Totems: archetypes feared or dreamt of by survivors, communities, and cults.

Players take on the roles of characters who are part of a community of survivors trying to find their place in a new world.

Their group may be nomadic, moving from ruins to wild lands in search of resources and allies, or settled, living in a precarious refuge that must be defended against outside threats. Depending on their beliefs, they might try to preserve the balance of a nature that has taken back control, learning to live with it rather than against it, or instead rebuild the remnants of the old civilization, restoring structures, technology, and laws, even at the risk of repeating past mistakes. Through their choices, the characters shape the future of their community and decide what it truly means to “find a place” in this changed world.

In 2023, we published the Survival Kit, an introduction to this unique setting with character creation and action resolution rules. Today, we invite you to dive deeper into the Vermin 2047 lore.

We offer two new full-color books:
  • a post-apocalyptic European setting with the Universe book;
  • a post-apocalyptic American setting with the Arizona book.
  • and, of course, the Survival Kit if you missed it during the first crowdfunding ;)

There are full of useful information and plot hooks: the story of the collapse, an overview of the country, descriptions of survivor communities and NPCs, and threats to human life: monstrous vermin and dangerous humans.

🔑 KEY POINTS
  • A post-apocalyptic universe where nature has turned against humanity: no more networks, no reliable information, only local survival.
  • Totems that influence characters and communities, with a flexible level of supernatural elements ranging from gritty realism to full mutant horror.
  • Three complementary books to play: Survival Kit (rules + scenarios), Universe (European lore), Arizona (setting + adventure).
  • A game created by Studio Agate, the most internationally awarded French RPG studio.

🐀 VERMIN 2047 TTRPG

In 2047, the age of information is over. Networks have collapsed, media have gone silent. Mobile phones are only used to take photos and store pages from manuals, road maps, and construction plans.

Trail conversations, roadside encounters, and rare moments of calm now serve as social networks. In USA, nothing is known about what is happening in China, Africa, across the Atlantic, or even just across the Channel. The youngest do not even know that anything exists beyond the oceans. The world ends at rivers, forests, mountain barriers, the reach of binoculars, and shortwave radios.

The few pieces of information that still arrive from nearby cities and countries are at best several weeks old, carried by nomad convoys and so distorted by word of mouth that sorting truth from falsehood is impossible.

Nothing can be trusted. No information, no date, no event. Beyond what one has personally seen, touched, or heard, everything is just a mix of rumors, lies, and hopes.

Finally, PCs and community archetypes are influenced by the Totems, mysterious entities representing the shamanic forces that have reemerged with Nature’s revenge. We called them the Predator, the Builder, the Symbiote, the Horde, etc.

You can think of them as actual deities or as nightmarish archetypes imagined by survivor folklore, because the game lets you choose how much supernatural elements to introduce into the universe, through several "Game Modes" (more on this subject below).

  • The Predator: It is the reason for feeding behaviors, like hunting, tracking and fighting; however, it only promotes a justified form of violence, one that is necessary and vital.
  • The Scavenger: It drives every species for which patience has become one of few qualities; species who wait for weakness, injury, exertion or opportunity before feeding.
  • The Symbiote: A symbol of mutual aid, balance and harmony, the Symbiote is defined by interactions of trade and reciprocity where each party benefits from the other, no matter one’s respective needs or motivations.
  • The Parasite: The Parasite exploits and abuses without remorse, driven by the sole motivation to take what others have and that it needs.
  • The Builder: It is defined by the act of construction, creation or modification, and can be seen in groups as much as in individuals.
  • The Horde: The collective aspect of the Horde notwithstanding, this fearsome Totem is mostly defined by violence and ruthlessness. The Horde burns down, plunders and lays waste to all in order to achieve its goals, and does so without qualms.
  • The Hive: The Hive is defined by core aspects that do not relate solely to the concept of community: organization, hierarchy, devotion and the acute understanding that everyone has a role to play for the greater good.
  • The Lone Wolf: Survival at all costs. No cruelty. No qualms. Survive. Whereas the Hive values sacrifice in the interest of the group, the Lone Wolf is defined by Nature’s most primal instinct: survival.

So, which Totem are you?

The rules are intended for both beginners and experienced players, with simple core mechanics and optional systems that increase the level of precision in actions.

When an action involves chance, risk of failure, or could influence the rest of the story, players roll a number of ten-sided dice equal to the relevant Attribute. Each die is compared to a Difficulty. If at least one die equals or exceeds the Difficulty, the action succeeds. If several do, each counts as a Success and improves the positive outcome.

"Birds can be vermin too, you know"

Compared to other fictional worlds of this kind, Vermin offers several unique features.
The level of the fantastic is flexible and set by the player group: are the horrific insects and mutant vermin real?

Some will want action, spectacle, and colossal fights against giant creatures. Others may prefer a realistic, mysterious, or fantastic tone. Why settle for a single way to play when several can exist in the same setting?

  • Survival Mode excludes all fantastical elements. Some species have slightly mutated, grown, or changed diet to adapt, but none have developed extraordinary abilities.

  • Halfway between pure realism and unrestrained horror, Nightmare Mode adds fiction and the supernatural to the world and its inhabitants. Many creatures have not only grown and evolved, but some have also become predators of humans, whose new generations are beginning to develop strange mutations.

  • Giant termite mounds covering buildings, beetles the size of tanks, telepathic rats, tribes of radioactive undead, abominations born from mixing humans and insects: Apocalypse Mode sets no limits on scale, horror, or mutation, turning the world into a vast hunting ground where humans are only one prey among many.

🪰 THE UNIVERSE BOOK

The lore-only book, Universe, look at the European world of Vermin 2047 through the eyes of a survivor chronicling life after the Collapse. The survivors, the passage of time, communication networks, and the ever-present threat of vermin are all described by the narrator and numerous in-world documents salvaged from the ruins.

Navigate a harsh new reality where every day is a struggle for food, water, and safety, and where vermin are more than just pests. Explore the roads, cities, and countryside, encounter strange Totems, and meet other survivors: some helpful, some deadly.

Packed with maps, illustrated scenes, official documents, and a bestiary (cataloging insects, mammals, and parasites, often with illustrations and organized by Totem type), this book blends firsthand accounts with practical guides for surviving in a world transformed. It’s a journey through a post-apocalyptic landscape where danger, mystery, and discovery lie around every corner!

This 128-page, full-color hardcover is a lore-only book. You can use it with other game systems and campaign settings, or simply read it as a post-apocalyptic novel.

  • Day by day: How to survive after the Collapse, the new paths survivors need to find, what's remain of France.
  • Visions and landscapes : Strange rumors heard from communities, travel notes about rivers, ruins and mountains.
  • About the others: Military reports about numerous topics found among the ruins. There are still soldiers who can launch drones and who know everything...
  • Fauna, flora: A half burned binder from a father and son who were biologists, with many sketches and analysis of dangerous critters and weird flora.

🐍 THE ARIZONA BOOK

Vermin 2047 encourages you to look around you and imagine what your region would be like in 2047. So we asked one of our authors to write a campaign setting in the place he’s lived for over ten years: Arizona. Far from the American dream, Arizona 2047 depicts a harsh, unforgiving land...

This 64-page hardcover, full-color book is divided into three main parts:

  • Introduction. Presents Laura, the supplement’s narrator; the different modes of play transposed to the scale of Arizona; and a timeline specific to local cities and populations.
  • Arizona in 2047 and Mother Nature. Detail life in what has essentially become a desert: how to travel through it (and how not to), where to find shelters, and how to survive despite the heat, the lack of water, and sandstorms. You’ll also find a presentation of several towns and communities that have taken root in this hostile environment, along with some of the region’s most notable figures. Not to mention the most persistent rumors, how they uniquely function in this part of the world, plus warnings about the flora, the fauna, and the ever-present vermin…
  • Lost Paradises. An adventure tailored for Survival Mode but easily adapted to Nightmare or Apocalypse Mode. Perfect for kicking off an American campaign!
